Hualin Temple (huá lín sì 华林寺), the cradle of Buddhism in China, is located in Guangzhou, with a long history of more than 1400 years.
Legend has it that the Indian Monk Bodhidharma crossed the Indian and the Pacific oceans and finally arrived in Guangzhou after three years of trudge in 526 (the 7th year of Emperor Liangwu's reign) to do missionary work in China. Later generations respected this eminent monk from Western Buddhist kingdom and named his landing place as Landing Ground of Dharma. More than one thousand years passed, and the name was still in use. The temple Dharma built after his arrival in Guangzhou was called Xilai Monastery. This is the Buddha shrine from where he first spread the Buddhism doctrines. Dharma was later divinized as the founder of the Zen Buddhism in China. Now Cantonese are still respectful of Dharma. After its completion, Xilai Monastery went through several repairs in Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty, Song Dynasty, Yuan Dynasty and Qing Dynasty and changed its name to Hualin Temple.
The Hall of Five Hundred Arhats that we see in this video faces south with its south-north axis from the hall gate to the statue of the Buddha at the north end. On its East and West sides are corridors, enshrining and worshiping the 500 Arhats on the 1-meter-plus-high pedestals.
The original statues were destroyed completely during the Cultural Revolution. The existing statues were re-sculpted in 1997 according to the drawing of Five Hundred Arhats drawn in Emperor Guangxu's reign in Qing Dynasty and relevant data.

Having Lunch Inside A Buddhist Temple! Guangzhou, China
I’ve been craving Chinese food for a while and visiting this place seemed like the perfect solution for it.
You may wonder how such craving is possible living in China, however, I live in a very westernized area and the Chinese food available near me is not vegan.
It is confirmed, this place is a gem to end that baozi(Chinese bun) craving and I find it’s also just perfect for tourists. You are able to visit a stunning temple and eat the local food in a great ambiance and atmosphere, all in one.
The beautiful temple is located near Beijing Road, a famous shopping street, it may be one more attraction for the combo if shopping is your cup of tea.
After the meal, a stroll around the Gold Buddha temple will bring you pure joy, and if lucky you’ll be around at the ceremony time and witness the beauty of it. This bit can’t be recorded, no problem though, have a look at the majestic and gigantic golden Buddhas for yourself and let us know how you feel. ????

Temple of the Six Banyan Trees - Liurong Temple- Guangzhou, China
This temple was built in 573 AD to house relics of Buddha received from India. The temple has had different names through history, but settled on Liu Rong or Six Banyan Trees Temple in 1100 A.D. when famous writer Su Dongpo wrote about the beautiful trees that once stood here. The Flowery Pagoda appears to be 9 stories high from the outside, but is actually 17 stories on the inside. The temple houses massive brass Buddhas each weighing 10-tons and being 3 meters or nearly 20 feet in height.

Guangzhou Buddhist Master
John Spuhler along with other EEG staff had the privilege of meeting with the head Buddhist monk in all of Guangdong province, who is also one of the leading senators.
We have since been invited back to dine with him three more times. He is always hospitable and friendly.
