How to Use the Hubway Bike Share Program (produced by Harvard Commuter Choice)
Harvard University is a major supporter of Hubway, the Boston area regional bike share program. The Commuter Choice Program created this video to show the Harvard community and visitors how they can take advantage of the new program as a healthy, emissions-free travel option.
As part of its commitment to sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the University worked closely with the cities of Boston and Cambridge to support the launch of Hubway will provide students, staff, faculty, residents and visitors with a healthy, emissions-free option for traveling throughout the Boston metropolitan area and between Harvard's schools and campuses.
Harvard supported the installation of 11 Hubway stations include 4 in Allston, 1 in Longwood and 6 throughout Cambridge.
Ride Boston's New Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail
Protected bike lanes are becoming less rare in many U.S. cities and I got to ride a fine new one in the City of Boston. Called the Connect Historic Boston Bike Trail, it is the beginning segment - about two miles so far - of a longer loop that plans to circle the downtown area.
The idea was to connect historic Boston places via a safe bike route that not only commuters could use to get about, but also visitors or residents wanting to further explore the city.
The segment features a lot of good design practices. Where it intersects with driveways or parking lots the drivers are slowed by having to meet the bike lane which has been raised to the level of the sidewalk. It also features ample #freshkermit (that's green paint) in areas to highlight possible conflict areas between motorists and cyclists. Additionally, some intersections have been built with some protection. And some environmentally friendly bits as well: permeable pavement and a bioswale.
There's one section here tha'ts center running - which, yes, always has its critics - but in this case it makes much more sense to put riders away from crowded sidewalks at North Station/TD Garden. I'd much rather ride in the freedom of the center versus contending with pedestrians and cars. Just imagine this scenario averted.
Big thanks to the good transportation folks from the City of Boston who came out to meet me after work with little notice to take a one hour excursion with Streetfilms!

Bike Shares in Boston, Atlanta and Houston
Cycling in Boston Atlanta and Houston The NFL connection. In this episode I talk about the cycling culture of the two NFL teams that competed in professional football's Big Game and the host city, Houston. All three cities have a successful bike share system.
SHARE THIS VIDEO:
1) In January, Host City Houston Texas unveiled a new B-Cycle station, adjacent to their downtown fan experience convention center and promoted free rides during the lead up to the Big Game..
I’ve used B-cycle in several cities including right here in my hometown of Indianapolis, Cincinnati and several others. It's a Great way to tour, explore any town or beat the crowds to a large sporting event!
2) Team cities Boston & Atlanta both have a growing cycling culture..
Atlanta’s Streets Alive takes place in the heart of downtown and has reached 6000 participants annually.
Their Walk, Bike Thrive program, the city has pledge something like a Billion dollars over the next couple of decades to invest in Walkable Bikeable options a massive regional trail network for starters.
Boston made American League of Bicyclist’s Top 20 this year. Their Hubway bike sharing system is a major success, with 1,700 bikes at 170 stations..more than 4.5 million people have used the cystem since it started in 2011.
3) I gotta give a hats off to Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff. A former competitive mountain bike racer, Mr Dimitrioff is seriously avid cyclist, owns 15 bikes, he participates and encourages citizens join him in Atlanta annual Bike to Work Day. Thank You Mr. Dimitrioff the inspiration and encouragement for cyclists everywhere.
