Hunting Island Lighthouse, South Carolina
While there are many more remote lighthouses Hunting Island has an unspoiled quality to it that I experience each time I visit. The lighthouse itself was constructed so that it could be disassembled and the reassembled if necessary. The photos are primarily by my wife Sandra, but a few of the shots are mine. The music is composed by myself. Chris Lindstrom

Hunting Island????State Park | Minimal Beachfront 4 Minimalist | The Lighthouse, Beach & Marsh
We visited Hunting Island in South Carolina in early October! This was our first stay at the beach at Hunting Island State Park! This is a rural area with not much to offer tourists but it is a perfect minimal beach for the minimalist! Closets gas station is 10 miles away which we share us almost running out of diesel! We got to watch the Sunrise and see volunteers dig up sea turtle eggs but unfortunately none of the batch survived.

Established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Hunting Island is a 5,000-acre park with 5 miles of undeveloped beach. This secluded tropical paradise, which is located in the heart of South Carolinas Sea Islands, is home to an array of wildlife such as deer, alligators, snakes, and even a popular nesting ground for the endangered loggerhead turtle.
According to (southcarolinaparks.com) Hunting Island is one of South Carolina’s most popular state parks, attracting more than a million visitors a year. The park offers camping, boating, picnicking, swimming, bird watching, geocaching, biking and hiking.
We’ve been coming to Hunting Island since 2011 and we immediately fell in love. Because of this we decided to make a list of our Top 5 Things to do while visiting the island. But before we get started we wanted to throw a trivia question out there for you all. There have been three films filmed at Hunting Island. Can you name them? The Hunting Island lighthouse is currently open, but is subject to close without notice for repairs. For more information, please contact the park directly.
The historic lighthouse at Hunting Island State Park is the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina.
For an admission of $2, visitors can climb the 167 steps and walk around the observation deck for a lofty view of the barrier island and surrounding seascape. CHILDREN MUST BE AT LEAST 44 TALL TO CLIMB THE LIGHTHOUSE.
March through Oct., the tower is open for climbing beginning at 10am daily -- with the last admission accepted at 4:45pm each day. Nov. through Feb. the tower is open for climbing beginning at 10am daily -- with the last admission accepted at 3:45pm each day. Visitors may find the lighthouse closed during inclement weather due to safety concerns.
The lighthouse was closed for repairs in May 2003 when cracks were discovered in several of its cast-iron steps. In a renovation that spanned more than 18 months, construction crews not only repaired the cracks, but installed steel braces beneath them for reinforcement. Left unpainted, the silver-gray braces stand out in sharp contrast to the black cast-iron stairs. The contrast helps distinguish between the original structure and modern improvements, which protect the lighthouse's historic integrity.
The original structure was built in 1859 and rebuilt in 1875 after it was destroyed during the Civil War. A unique feature of the lighthouse is that it was constructed of interchangeable cast-iron sections so it could be dismantled should it ever need to be moved. Severe beach erosion made it necessary to relocate the lighthouse 1.3 miles inland in 1889.

Why Hunting Island's lighthouse is movable -- and other facts about the SC landmark
Because Hunting Island is an erosional barrier island, its lighthouse — built in 1875 — was designed to be movable. Here's how it was done, and more facts about the historic lighthouse. All in honor of National Lighthouse Day.

Hunting Island State Park
Celebrated our 15 year Anniversary with a trip to Hunting Island! This was our first time visiting Hunting Island State Park and loved it!
Day three showcases our engagement and how awesome Shane is. He not only completely surprised me with a proposal, but also captured this special moment on video.
We stayed Friday, November 1st-Tuesday November 5th 2019.
We tent camped at one of the normal sites, but they also offer rustic tent sites that are beach front. The state park has hot showers (not the most private, but I was happy to have a place to shower and get warm and these bathrooms were much nicer than a previous park we visited!) and each site (not including the rustic sites) has power hookups with multiple voltages including a 20v for normal/regular power outlets. We are able to make coffee and cook hot meals everyday.
Be sure to put up EVERYTHING up in the evenings. We put all food items up, but left a couple bags out the first night and the racoons still investigated our stuff. Lots of wildlife. Deer and racoons were at our site every night.
