Hutatma Chowk is located in the busy financial district of South Mumbai. It derives its present name from an incident in 1960 when a peaceful demonstration by the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti (United Maharashtra Committee) was fired upon by the police resulting in 105 deaths. The incident was part of ongoing struggles of the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, amongst others, for the creation of the State of Maharashtra. The shooting proved to be a major impetus for the creation of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960.
The Hutatma Chowk square is lined on all sides by buildings constructed during the British Raj. An ornate fountain surrounded by delicately carved figures forms the center of the huge square. This was the Flora Fountain.

Hutatma Chowk Mumbai
At Night
Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk or Martyr's Square), Fort, South Mumbai, India
This is a video of my trip to Flora Fountain or Hutatma Chowk, also known as Martyr's Square in Fort, South Mumbai, India.
I had come from Andheri station, taking the local from there, and got down at Churchgate station. From there I walked up this this point and onwards to Horniman Circle, to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee at the brand new Starbucks outlet which has opened there inside Elphinstone Building.
It is not all that long a walk, and many of us (at least me for sure!) are used to walking such a distance anyway, although locals whom I asked suggested that I take a cab from Churchgate station up to the Starbucks outlet.
If you are in Mumbai, this is a part of the city which you must visit - the colonial legacy and hangover of the erstwhile Bombay is just too overwhelming here!
This is what a noted Mumbaikar (Mumbai resident) and cricketer has had to say about Flora Fountain, where he grew up:
The Centres of the world are well etched in the mind: the New York's Time Square and the Paris's Champs Elysee, London's Piccadilly circus. Even now I feel a curious magic about Mumbai's Flora Fountain. We called it the heart of the city and so it was.
