Driving Downtown - Chicago Illinois USA - Episode 42.
Starting Point: .
Chicago is the third-most populous city in the United States. With over 2.7 million residents it is the most populous city in the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. The Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland, has nearly 10 million people and is the third-largest in the U.S.
The city is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation: O'Hare International Airport is the second-busiest airport in the world when measured by aircraft traffic; the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and rail road freight. The city has one of the world's largest and most diversified economies with no single industry employing more than 14% of the workforce.
In 2015, Chicago had over 52 million international and domestic visitors. Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, novels, film, theater, especially improvisational comedy, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, gospel and house music. It also has professional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues. Chicago has many nicknames, the best-known being the Windy City.
Tourism
In 2014, Chicago attracted 50.17 million domestic leisure travelers, 11.09 million domestic business travelers and 1.308 million overseas visitors. These visitors contributed more than US$13.7 billion to Chicago's economy. Upscale shopping along the Magnificent Mile and State Street, thousands of restaurants, as well as Chicago's eminent architecture, continue to draw tourists. The city is the United States' third-largest convention destination.
Sports
The city has two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams: the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox. The Chicago Bears, one of the last two remaining charter members of the National Football League (NFL), have won nine NFL Championships, including the 1985 Super Bowl XX. The Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA) is one of the most recognized basketball teams in the world. The Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League (NHL) began play in 1926, and are one of the Original Six teams of the NHL.
Economy
Chicago is a major world financial center, with the second-largest central business district in the United States. The city is the headquarters of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (the Seventh District of the Federal Reserve). The city has major financial and futures exchanges, including the Chicago Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.
Architecture
The destruction caused by the Great Chicago Fire led to the largest building boom in the history of the nation. In 1885, the first steel-framed high-rise building, the Home Insurance Building, rose in the city as Chicago ushered in the skyscraper era, which would then be followed by many other cities around the world. Today, Chicago's skyline is among the world's tallest and most dense.
Cuisine
Chicago lays claim to a large number of regional specialties that reflect the city's ethnic and working-class roots. Included among these are its nationally renowned deep-dish pizza; this style is said to have originated at Pizzeria Uno. The Chicago-style thin crust is also popular in the city.
Infrastructure
Chicago is a major transportation hub in the United States. It is an important component in global distribution, as it is the third-largest inter-modal port in the world after Hong Kong and Singapore.

35 Things to do in Chicago | Top Attractions Travel Guide
The following travel video is a comprehensive list of the best 35 Things to do in Chicago including all of the top Attractions worth visiting and seeing in this complete travel guide for the Windy City.
Many people don't realize this but Chicago is a world class city with festivals, arts, entertainment, dining and architecture that can rival any city in North America or even Europe. The only other city that I think can compare with Chicago - in terms of attractions - in America is New York. Whether you're scarfing down Chicago style deep dish pizza or taking in a Blues festival you'll find no shortage of things to do in the city. If you're a sport fan there are no shortage of professional teams to follow at any time of the year including the Chicago Blackhawks, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls. When you're thinking of destination to travel to in the United States, Chicago should be near the top of your list. I guarantee that you'll have a lot of fun:

Chicago, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri
Two American Midwestern cities just 260 miles (418 km) apart, although if you’ve seen Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, you’d think they were a lot further away than that.
Wait, why I am comparing these two cities? Why not Chicago and Houston? Or St. Louis and Kansas City? Doesn’t that make more sense.
Well kind of. But I’m comparing Chicago and St. Louis because those two cities were once in direct competition to become the biggest and most important city in the Midwest. I’m making this video in collaboration with Dave from the channel City Beautiful. On his channel, he has a video explaining why and how Chicago beat out St. Louis to indeed become THE biggest, most important Midwestern city. Be sure to check it out after you’re done watching this one.
Once upon a time, it was actually St. Louis that appeared to be destined to become the biggest, most important American Midwestern city. First of all, St. Louis is older than Chicago. It was founded by the French in 1764, after they lost the Seven Years’ War. Basically, French settlers fled there from the east after the British took over their former territory. For its first 38 years, St. Louis was under Spanish control. So while the French lived there, the Spanish guarded the town during that time. In those early years, St. Louis established itself as a major fur trading center. In 1803, when it had maybe 1,000 people living there, the United States bought Louisiana from France after it briefly took it back over. St. Louis, being in Louisiana, was now an American city, and became the administrative capital of all of Louisiana Territory. After Lewis and Clark left St. Louis exploring this vast territory, others would follow, and the city became a hub for folks on their way out to the “Wild West.”
St. Louis steadily grew, it’s population nearing 5,000 by 1830. In 1833, when St. Louis was 69 years old, Chicago was finally born. I mean, St. Louis was a creepy old man by the time Chicago came around. While St. Louis was mostly a fur trading hub, Chicago quickly became a transportation hub, a way to connect the east, where most Americans lived, to the west. It was the site of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848 to connect the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. After a couple decades, it became the most important railroad city in the country.

Things to Do in Chicago | 6/24/2014 | Concierge Picks | Chicago Travel
Hello! I'm Anthony Gates, Concierge at the JW Marriott Chicago, and this week's concierge correspondent. I have your Concierge Picks for the busy week of June 24 -- 30. Let's dive into it!
The annual Chicago Gospel Music Festival, one of the only free admission gospel festivals in the world, takes place at the Chicago Cultural Center and Ellis Park June 27th through the 29th. The highlight of the festival will be the McDonald's Inspiration Celebration Gospel Tour, hosted by comedian Jonathan Slocumb and Erica Campbell, one half of the multi-award-winning gospel duo Mary Mary. Audiences can expect to hear performances by the always-exuberant Mississippi Mass Choir and Uncle Reese, who blends gospel and hip-hop with stage drama. While the Chicago Cultural Center is downtown, Ellis Park is located at 37th and Cottage Grove in Chicago's historic Bronzeville neighborhood, near the area where modern gospel music was birthed more than 80 years ago. See your concierge for more information.

Also this weekend is the 30th annual World's Largest Block Party at Old St. Pat's Church. Considered to be Chicago's oldest public building and a treasured historic landmark, this event at Old St. Pat's is a party for a good cause. Proceeds support the mission and outreach activities of Old St. Pat's including the Education Center, the Outreach Group, Horizons For Youth, to name a few. Expect live music, the tastiest treats, and celebrity bartenders at this two-day block party. This all takes place June 27 and 28 at Madison & Des Plaines Streets in Chicago's West Loop. Sorry, you must be 21 years old to enter this one.

Finally, on Sunday, June 29, stake your claim along the parade route for the Pride Parade, part of June's Pride Month in Chicago. The parade is held the weekend after Chicago's iconic annual Pride Fest. The parade kicks off at 12 noon from Broadway and Montrose going along a four-mile route. My tips for the best viewing? For the liveliest, head to Halsted St. between Belmont & Grace Streets in the heart of Boystown. For a less crowded area, head to the beginning of the parade on Broadway between Montrose and Sheridan. Bar and restaurant celebrations follow the parade and continue throughout the night. See your concierge for more information and be a part of the festivities in Boystown!

Route begins on Broadway Ave. at Montrose

Chicago (Illinois) - In Another Minute (Week 237)
--- ---
I've been fond of Chicago, Illinois, for a long time. One of my dearest friends from the film school days, Nick Rufca, is from around there. In 2011, I was invited to screen the Moving Postcard web series as part of a group art show at the S3 Gallery. (You can watch a 1-minute video about that experience: Scott and I spent a lovely weekend there in 2006, after filming in Illinois for our documentary All God's Children ( But the trip this week is what will seal this city in my heart forever as one of my very special happy places.
My father, Günter Westphal, a social artist and photographer from Hamburg, Germany, was nominated and then selected for a month-long art residency; and I got to join him for his first few days in the Windy City. It was absolutely amazing!
Sharing one of my favorite activities (exploring a new place with my camera and someone I love) with my dad brought me ultimate and long-lasting happiness. As neither of us could stop gushing about all that we saw and pointing our camera almost obsessively (and often at the same subjects), I knew more than ever that I'm my father's daughter.
Helping him navigate the city and American culture and language, I felt so grateful for the privilege of supporting my awesome dad. Tagging along to events where we met other fascinating artists, people from the Goethe Institute and even the German consul to 13 US states, I was overwhelmed with pride of my dad and his curiosity, thoughtfulness, social and creative work and his courage.
On a side note, I also was delirious with the buzz of being back in a real city - with all its inspiration, energy, interesting people and conversations and the opportunity to shoot lots and lots of photos and videos.
If you're in Chicago, my father will give a presentation about his social art work on Saturday, November 22, at 5pm at the Experimental Station (6100 South Blackstone Ave - Scott and I will be there as well... and maybe even Whiskey...
In this video, you can see the West Loop neighborhood, where my dad is staying, some street art, the L train looping through downtown Chicago (Loop neighborhood), my dad posing for photos in his Münzviertel shirt (the Hamburg neighborhood where he does most of his social art work) at the Randolph/Wabash train station, the Cloud Gate (if you look closely, you can see us hugging in the reflection) and a few more shots from that corner of Chicago.
Special thanks to Rebecca Beechy, a social and visual artist in Chicago, who was one of the two artists chosen for the Hamburg portion of the Chicago-Hamburg artist exchange last year, and who has been such a great host to both my dad and myself.
The music in this video is called Blues Shuffle In A One Take Improv Exercise (by Stevie's Amp Shack) and is licensed under Creative Commons CC BY 3.0.

The Beatles - Concerts in Chicago, 1964-1966
1995 news clip about the The Beatles concerts in Chicago. They appeared at the Chicago Amphitheatre in 1964 & 1966, and two shows at White Sox Park (Comiskey) in 1965. **Thanks to the 7Up company, I was at the '65 afternoon concert with my mom!**
The Ivy Luxury Boutique Hotel in downtown Chicago, Illinois
This is my King Suite room at the Ivy Boutique Hotel. Sorry for the crappy instability of the video. I suck.
Pros:
Super luxurious! Ridiculously large bathtub (I'm 6' and this allowed me to fully submerge without me knees sticking out of the water. Insanely comfortable bed! The electric drapes were cool! The sensors under the night tables that turned on small lights when you get out of bed. The LCD tv in the bathroom mirror (suites only, not studios). The big HD TVs in the 2 main rooms. The second room with a couch! The highly attentive staff. The baked goods at turndown service time. The overhead waterfall shower! The free wi-fi! The rooftop lounge with super nice staff!
Cons:
The bathroom TV isn't viewable from an angle (it is visible, but the picture becomes blurry like a privacy screen), so you can't watch it while in the bathtub.
No parking.
There's no sheet on the bed - just a bottom sheet and the comforter/sheet combo. Kinda weird, but still sooo comfortable! The crazy prices for wet bar and snacks ($6 for a can of pringles? $3 for a tiny bag of pretzels?)
The price of drinks in the lounge ($7 for a Corona?)
Still a new hotel, so kinks to be worked out -- like the advertised, but not open yet, fitness center :-(
Overall, a really nice hotel and I highly encourage anyone to check it out!

Housing assistance in the form of public housing and rental offsets is available for people with low incomes or who are living in a natural disaster area. Find out how to apply.
Step 1: Contact housing authority
Contact your state or local public housing agency for information on eligibility and assistance in the form of vouchers, discounts, and public housing. You may be eligible if you have a low income, are elderly or disabled, or were displaced by a disaster.
Tip
Visit the U.S. Department of Housing website at hud.gov. On the homepage, click on State Info, then click on your state. For instance, if you live in Texas, select Texas from the drop-down menu under the State Info heading.
Step 2: Get disaster assistance
Contact FEMA at 800-621-FEMA to find out if you are eligible for temporary housing assistance if you were displaced from your home by a disaster.
Step 3: Find state help
Find out if you can get help from your state in addition to or instead of federal assistance programs by inquiring at your local housing agency or speaking to a housing counselor at 800-569-4287.
Tip
A special federal fund provides grants to states to assist very low-income elderly and people with disabilities with housing. Maryland, for instance, was promised $13.5 million under the program.
Step 4: Come prepared
Bring your pay stubs and identification to your meeting with the housing authority when you apply for housing assistance.
Step 5: Determine eligibility
Fill out an application for assistance and wait to be notified about your eligibility for Section 8 vouchers for an apartment rental or other assistance.
