A Day in Riga
There's still plenty of countries left in Europe I'm still to visit, but next on my list was the former Soviet Socialist Republic and new-ish Republic on the block... Latvia.
Having only received true independence in 1991, it is quite remarkable to see what a strong identity the country has and how much history there is available (having been occupied by the Soviets, the Nazis and then the Soviets again).
Tourists visiting the country has been growing drastically year upon year. When the country joined the European Union in 2004 it lead to a surge in popularity, eventually with the country joining the Euro in 2014 and is now considered a real asset to the union.
So, enjoy my short video of my time in Riga. One of the prettiest cities I have ever had the pleasure to visit.

Social Entrepreneurship in Latvia. Galileo Impact Stories #41
Hi, friends. This is a very special release of Galileo Impact Stories from Riga, Latvia.
Two weeks ago, I was in Riga, where I had a chance to study local social entrepreneurship. I’ve met with an association, business accelerator, and a social venture. Let me tell you more about it.
Social entrepreneurship is a relatively new concept in Latvia. Only since April 2018, social entrepreneurship is regulated by the Social Enterprise Law.
Since the law has come into force quite recently, there are only 70 companies in the Latvian national register, which are registered as social ventures. Many social enterprises still operate as associations and foundations. It is estimated that there are up to 200 legal entities that could be considered as social enterprises in Latvia. Most of them are relatively new, having been established only within the last 2 to 5 years, and usually, do not employ more than 10 people. The majority of these companies is located in the capital city Riga.
The Social Enterprise Law provides the following definition of a social venture:
“limited liability company that is granted the status of social enterprise and that performs economic activity which creates a positive social impact. It must have paid employees and 100% of profit to be invested to achieve social objectives.”
In this case, a social venture can receive support from the Local Ministry of Welfare.
The main stakeholders in the social entrepreneurship ecosystem of Latvia are social enterprises, government and municipality organizations, various incubators and Social Entrepreneurship Association of Latvia.
The Association’s purpose is to promote the development of social entrepreneurship in Latvia. Liene Reine-Miteva the director of Association kindly agreed to meet me in Riga to tell more about their activities.
The Association was founded in autumn 2015 and operates in three main directions:
First. Advocacy of interests at local, regional and national levels.
Second. Support of capacity building of members. This is done through best practice and knowledge sharing, joint activities, finance, and cooperation opportunities. The association provides consultations, seminars and lectures, workshops and forums.
The third is about awareness. The Association takes part in various events to inform the wider community about opportunities in social entrepreneurship.
Now the Social Entrepreneurship Association has become one of the leading organizations in the social entrepreneurship sector in Latvia.
My next meeting was with Maria Povilaite, board member and mentor at Social Entrepreneurship Accelerator Newdoor.
Social entrepreneurship accelerator NewDoor started operating in 2013. It provides accelerations programs for social startups in Latvia. The program is strongly focused on practical skills development. It consists of 4 modules, 2 full days each. Modules are spread in a distance of 1 – 2 months to allow for intensive personal work in between. At the end of the program, New Door accelerator alumni have a detailed action plan for 1 year and an action plan outlook for 3 years. 55 projects passed through an accelerator in 4 years.
In 2019 NewDoor has been nominated for Emerging Europe Awards 2019 in the category Equality-Friendly Initiative of the Year.
Last but not least, I met a wonderful social entrepreneur Natalija Jermolajeva who established a shop with products from the Baltic region produced by social entrepreneurs.
She started with the company OWA several years ago, when she and her friend decided to produce and sell clothes with design pictures. After a good start, Natalia came to accelerator NewDoor and was one of the best alumni.
This year she opened a shop where people can buy products from more than 30 social entrepreneurs. The ideas of the Shop are connected to fashion and gifts for any holiday. All potential gift receivers are covered – from children to business partners. Clients can print chosen design on mugs or designed T-shirts.
I was really impressed with inspiring power, energy, and optimism of Natalia. A very bright person especially if to consider that she has a disability. I’m proud of such social entrepreneurs. If you go to Riga don’t forget to visit her shop. All links are under this video.
Well, that’s all for today. Write in comments about other wonderful social ventures in Riga, if you know them. Bye, have a nice day!
Moving to Latvia!!!
Our family is moving to Latvia. And we would love to share our experiences with you.

Pham Ngu Lao nightlife is also one of Ho Chi Minh’s finest, with throngs of street vendors, bia hoi stalls, lively bars, and downtown clubs filling up the lively scene. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2 and Crazy Buffalo Nightclub as well as many smaller pubs that are known for their cheap drinks and happy hour promos. It’s also common around here to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, we highly suggest getting up early and visit the parks within the area. It is interesting to see (and even to join in on) the elders participating in Tai Chi-like exercise sessions. Another must-do is heading to the morning markets such as Ben Tanh Market, where local vendors sell a wide array of fresh produce, household supplies, and Vietnamese street food at attractive prices. As Pham Ngu Lao is not such a large area, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot - the best time to do this is in the morning and late afternoon as the weather can be rather scorching at the height of the day. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also travel agencies that can help arrange for day trips within the city centre and beyond...

It'll take a hundred years for them to outgrow their nostalgia for the Soviet Empire. Or they should adopt the same position as Germany under Adenhauer. Putin must follow the path of true democracy and reveal to the Russian people all the crimes of the Red Army and the KGB and ask for forgiveness, as did Germany. We don't have any problems now with Germany.

Many of them didn't take any citizenship. So they're not citizens. They thought that they were staying loyal to the USSR and its successor Russia but in actual fact it turns out that neither Russia nor Putin wants these citizens.

LEAD IN:
Russia's relations with Latvia continue to be clouded by the treatment of the country's sizable Russian minority.
Russia accuses Latvia of treating its ethnic Russians as second-class citizens.
Latvia insists that to gain citizenship they must pass a language test and answer questions on Latvian history.
And caught in the middle are several hundred thousand Russians who yearn for a return to the USSR.
STORYLINE:
For many ethnic Russians living in Latvia, the beautiful old town of Riga is another world.
The majority of the country's Russians live in Soviet-built suburbs where there is little beauty to be seen.
All that changed in 1991 with the fall of the Soviet Union. Latvia chose independence and the Russians living there suddenly became aliens.

Spain's 'low cost' prostitutes
Dozens of prostitutes for less than a hundred euros a trick, and fully within the law: that's what many brothels here have on offer, just six kilometres over the border from France, in the Pyrenees. The place is making a name for itself among the French -- a popularity that local authorities could have done without.Duration: 01:59
Why You Need To Pay For Russian Women
Instagram:
Everyone knows this, but no one had asked this question.
Why do you need to Pay for Russian Women?
Russia has a very old point of view of women's role.
A lot of Russians don't believe women should earn
And a lot of Russian women believe that the man should pay.
Where is this coming from?
Why is it happening?
How come it's still happening?
This video answers those questions

Outstanding Pastry, Supermarkets & Food in The Baltics
If I had to pick one unexpected standout during two weeks in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, it would have to be the pastry, or as I refer to them, sweet rolls. Each and every supermarket (along with patisseries/backerei) had such a variety to choose from that ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I promptly went on a daily sweet roll orgy and snarfed down at least two each.
The RIMI and Maxima Supermarkets/Hypermarkets were also a revelation. (I always browse supermarkets when traveling.) Jim Beam Whiskey in a can? Potato chips in styles that I've never seen back in Chicago. Superb delis. And then there was the Baltic cuisine. I'm not referring to dumplings, cabbage and potatoes but the primarily pork dishes and salads. We never walked away hungry or disappointed.
If only I could have brought a gross of sweet rolls back with me to freeze, life would be perfect!
