Victims Of The Tragic Accident
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) Officials gave very few details about the victim in this crash.
What troopers did announce was the driver of a tractor trailer died after he drove into the back of an already stopped freightliner.
A three-vehicle crash Thursday, May 22, claimed a life.
The driver of a tractor trailer was killed when the vehicle he was driving struck the rear of a 2007 Freightliner that was stopped for another crash.
The identification of the driver is pending as is the vehicle identification because of fire.
The driver of the Freightliner suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to North Baldwin Hospital.
A third vehicle suffered minor damage from crash debris. The crash occurred at 2 p.m. on Interstate 65 (northbound) at the 27 mile marker, five miles north of Creola on the General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge.
Nothing further is available at this time as Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate.
An update will be released once positive identification is made.
The Alabama Department of Transportation will provide updates on the road closure.
Motorists Stranded for Hours After Fatal Delta Bridges Crash
MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A fatal fiery crash leaves one person dead and several motorists stranded for hours.
Officials confirmed two tractor trailers crashed on General W.K. Wilson Jr. Bridge, commonly known as the 'Dolly Parton' Bridge.
Both trailers caught fire, one person died. Alabama State Troopers, Saraland Hazmat, ALDOT, Coast Guard along with several
other emergency agencies were on the scene. Around 3 PM, the northbound lanes were shut down for hours and drivers were rerouted to Highway 43
near Creola. The detours left many motorists searching for new ways around the congestion.
We've been here for like 45 minutes and we're stranded right now, said Barbara Henry.
Henry was heading to Georgia when she hit the standstill traffic on the interstate. She stopped at a gas station along the side of the road
and sat for hours searching for a new route away from the closures.
Derrick Fraser and his family were using a GPS in search of a path to Brewton.
Evidently, I guess the interstate is closed off, so we're trying to find an alternative route, he said.
By the time rush hour traffic started moving through the area on Thursday, not much had changed, except the number of cars parked at gas stations. The southbound lanes eventually opened, but
there was still a lot of congestion. Officials confirmed the northbound lanes on I-65 will remain closed overnight. They will only open up the lanes to traffic once an inspection deems the roadway safe.
Until then, travelers are urged to find another way.
