Day hike #32: Ice Box Canyon in Red Rock Conservation Area in Las Vegas

8:19 Waterfall
3rd hike of my first day in Vegas. This was much more technical than I envisioned but turned out to be a great warm up for the canyons of Red Rock. Plenty of hopping over the creek on rocks and I found my trekking poles very helpful. At the end I was lucky enough that the waterfall was running. Apparently it isn't sometimes.
This trail is described as trail #16 in the Trail Descriptions section of the visitor guide that you can acquire at the visitor centre.

RED ROCK CANYON NEVADA-- ICE BOX CANYON TRAIL
Icebox Canyon is roughly about a 3 mile round trip hike that I would label as moderate. This trail can be found in the 13 mile scenic Loop drive of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Such beautiful hike is only a 30 minute drive from Las Vegas. Look and see the natural side of Sin City on this trail. Hike through this very beautiful Canyon and end up at a giant rock wall with a small slim streaming waterfall cascading down.

Ice Box Canyon - Red Rock Canyon Natl Conservation Area Las Vegas, NV 5-21-2011
Ice Box canyon is a a moderate to strenuos hike. Lots of large boulder scrambling..a rock wash hike.Towards the mouth of the canyon you can duck and hide in the tree limbs and make your own way around the boulders using your route finding skills closest to the south of the canyon walls..Towards the top left side there is a large flat boulder under the rim of the canyon wall where you can sit and have lunch in the shade. This is a great hike to bring more than two people..because they can help boost you up the boulders..as well as pull you up in the area's you cant reach your self.Make sure to look for rock climbers scalling the canyon walls..also listen very closley as you walk towards the left of the canyon..the larger wash below..is streaming..at as I am posting this..it is MAY!!!..You may loose your trail on the way back down..and find yourself towards that stream..just look up to your right..a make shift route trails, scals the ridge where you should be walking..
HIKING IN ICE BOX CANYON TRAIL IN THE HEART OF RED ROCK CANYON!#filipinablog
Red Rock Canyon one of the most visited attraction in Las Vegas. lies in Nevada's Mojave Desert. It's known for geological features such as towering red sandstones peks and the Keystone Thrust Fau;t, as well as Native American petroglyphs. Panaromic viewing spots dot the 13-mile scenic drive. This is a great place to visit that's off the strip. So many fun hikes with all different elevation. From the visitor area you'll be heading right away to Calico Trail the most photograph section of the Canyon. About 25 miles from Las Vegas Strip ,heading west Charleston. When visiting the Canyon, plan ahead to do hiking, picnic, bicycle or just takes photo in the Canyon

My part two video will take you the Ice Box Canyon Trail: The trail takes you through a cool, shady box canyon with seasonal waterfalls (December- April) in the heart of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The narrow canyon water and air pouring down from the mountains keep it significantly cooler than the open desert. But you will have cross the open desert to get there and scramble on boulders & loose rocks within the wash to get to the end of the Canyon.

ABOUT RED ROCK CANYON NATIONAL CONSERVATION AREA
After a few days at the casinos in Las Vegas, it will be time to take a break. Hop into a vehicle and head out to Red Rock Canyon National Recreation Area. A feast for the eyes, Red Rock Canyon is less than an hour's drive west of Las Vegas and has many significant geologic features. The area is a good place to kick back and just enjoy nature's wonders.
The most significant geologic feature of Red Rock Canyon is the Keystone Thrust Fault. A thrust fault is a fracture in the earth's crust where one rock plate is thrust horizontally over another. About 65 million years ago, it is believed that two of the earth's crustal plates collided with such force that part of one plate was shoved up and over younger sandstones. This thrust contact is clearly defined by the sharp contrast between the grey limestones and the red sandstones. The Keystone Thrust Fault extends from the Cottonwoood Fault (along the Pahrump Highway) 13 miles northward to the vicinity of La Madre Mountain, where it is obscured by more complex faulting.
The not-to-be-missed 13-Mile Loop Drive offers sightseeing, vistas and overlooks. If your time is limited, stop at either of the Calico Vista points. Both offer good vantage points for photographs of crossed-bedded Aztec sandstone. For easy walking access to the sandstone, stop at the Sandstone Quarry parking lot. There you can see large blocks of stone and other historic evidence of the quarry activity as it occurred shortly after the turn of the century.
Picnic sites are available at Red Spring and Willow Spring. Additional pullouts, offering views of wooded canyons and desert washes, are located at Icebox Canyon, Pine Creek Canyon and Red Rock Wash.
Several short hikes offering a diversity of environments and scenery are accessible from the loop drive. A short trail to the bottom of the canyon at the second Calico Vista leads down to the Aztec sandstone and, after seasonal rains, to small pools of water. There is easier hiking at Sandstone Quarry where many small canyons await exploration. The Calico Hills are riddled with natural water catchments called potholes or tinajas (tee-nah-haz). After rains these natural water tanks fill up with water and may be home to small insects, insect larvae and fairy shrimp.
A spring that flows year-round and a seasonally cascading waterfall await the visitor after a short, 0.3-mile hike to Lost Creek.
Icebox Canyon has a maintained trail which leads in for .8 mile; the end of Icebox Canyon is reached in another half mile by boulder hopping in the canyon bottom.
One of the most popular hiking trails is into Pine Creek Canyon. A two-mile round trip hike leads to the ruins of a historic homestead near a running creek, surrounded by large ponderosa pine trees and other water-loving vegetation.

RED ROCK CANYON, NEVADA - An easy trip from Las Vegas
Something that completely took us by surprise while visiting Las Vegas is the plethora of opportunities to visit scenic areas just outside of the city. Nestled just a short drive away from Las Vegas strip is the imposing Red Rock Canyon. To visit we partnered with Pink Jeep Tours who whisked us to numerous different vantage points where we had the opportunity to hike, walk and climb certain parts of the National Park. It's definitely an experience I'd recommend to others and it left me feeling nostalgic because the scenery and imposing landscapes are similar to what I experienced backpacking in Northern Argentina five years ago.

Visiting Red Rock Canyon - day trip from Las Vegas Travel Video Script:
On our second day in Las Vegas we decided to escape the city and enjoy a bit of the natural scenery. We joined the Pink Jeep Tour for an afternoon exploring Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Located about a half hour drive outside of the city this is an easy day trip filled with rugged desert landscapes. We spent a few hours driving through the park and also doing a bit of hiking along the way. Here are some of the highlights.
Alright, it's time to climb this bad boy. Okay, show us your climbing skills. Scramble up that mountain. Just like an old man.
So this over here is the Calico Ridge and the landscape reminds me a lot of Northern Argentina.
The toilet. Is the toilet occupied? Hmm. Huh?
Hello, there.
So we are coming to the end of this outing. We're just doing our last little hike through the park and soon we'll be back in Las Vegas. But how did you enjoy it? It's been awesome. It is so nice. I didn't realize that there was so many scenic areas just outside of Las Vegas. And the best part is that I am building up an appetite for an enormous steak. Or sushi? No, steak.
This is part of our Travel in the United States series. We're making a series of videos showcasing American culture, American arts, American foods, American religion, American cuisine and American people.

Red Rock Canyon - Ice Box Trail & the Calico Hills
A hardcore hike on the Red Rock Canyon State park in Nevada, USA, Starting with exploration of the scenery Ice Box Canyon, a 3 miles back and forth hike, should take around 3 hours to complete.
Hiking through this trail during winter time will require you to walk in water, in it's river bed, scrambling up, climbing on rocks and boulders and until getting to the fall in the end.
Best time to do this hike is in the winter, when there is snow on the surrounding mountains and water are gushing through the canyon.
Another short hike is the Calico hills trail, a 0.8 miles easy to moderate circular hike where you'll get to scramble through the vibrant redish sandstone rocks, towering over the trail, by the end of the trail there is a moderate climb that will take you to point Calico 2 where the trail ends, carefully walk on the side of the road back to Calico 1 where we have left the car.
The Red Rock Canyon is located on the outskirts of Vegas, only 30min drive from the strip, it is an excellent park for anyone staying there few days and would like to escape the noise and glittering lights to the quite and peaceful atmosphere of the Nature.
This video is not a replacement for a trail map, make sure to get a proper hiking trail map and visit the visitors center before taking a hike.
Also make sure to check weather conditions for flash flood warnings or extreme heat.
Make sure to take sufficient water with you and have good hiking boots.

Full video of my experience at Red Rock Canyon Ice Box Trail. Driving home from work to see how nice and beautiful the morning was. I just needed to go and I was also expecting a flash flood so I was rushing there walking and jogging as fast as I could to get to the spot where the waterfall is. When I saw all that water flowing down I really was scared for my life and was really wondering what will be my fate. I also help 2 young girls cross the high flowing water and followed me back to the road to get back home. I'm glad it wasn't really bad and it was just a small flash flood. But I would definitely do it again. It was one of a kind experience.

Red Rock Canyon's Visitor Center and White Rock Trailhead in Las Vegas, Nevada
I haven't made one of these long destination reviews in a while. Please let me know what you think of the format in the comments so I can make improvements in the future.
Red Rock Canyon has a really nifty visitor center. Getting into the 13-mile scenic loop drive with your vehicle costs $7 for a day pass. There are many hiking trails you can take; I took a random one called White Rock Trailhead. I could have taken the Pine Creek Canyon trailhead towards the end as a safer bet to see more wildlife but I had only one day to go hiking on this Las Vegas trip and this was the path of randomness I chose.
