TOUR of NORTHERN ICELAND! (AKUREYRI, GODAFOSS, MYVATAN, and DETTIFOSS) ????????2018 vlog
Welcome to Northern Iceland! In this vlog, we embark on a day trip adventure with Air Iceland Connect to see the otherworldly volcanic landscapes and waterfalls in Iceland's northern region.
This tour is for nature lovers and is best to explore during summer. We fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri, a 45-minute flight. We take a full day 10 hour guided tour that includes transportation. Our first stop is the stunning waterfall of Goðafoss.
We travel to Lake Myvatn´s unique nature and pseudo-craters, followed by the Dimmuborgir lava labyrinth. One of the top sights is bubbling Hverarond (aka Hverir), a geothermal area noted for its bubbling pools of mud & steaming fumaroles emitting sulfuric gas. The desolate landscape looks like mars.
Next, we reach one of the main highlights - Dettifoss which is Europe´s most powerful waterfall featured in the movie Prometheus. Next, we visit the volcanic wonderlands of Vatnajokull National Park, Jokulsargljufur canyon, Hljodaklettar (Echo cliffs), Asbyrgi a horse-shoe-shaped cliff formation. We finish our tour in the quaint Husavik fishing town. Lastly, we head to Akureyri to fly back to Reykjavik!

Malarkaffi Restaurant at Drangsnes in the Westfjords of Iceland
At the restaurant Malarkaffi in Drangsnes you will experience local food at it´s freshest. The owners go fishing every day. They serve lamb from the region. Puffin from the Grímsey island nearby.
Mussels and many other types of fresh fish. They dry lumpfish which is quite unique. The family goes up to the mountains where they pick blueberries and Icelalandic wild timian which they then use for garnish some of their incredible dishes.

Akureyri is a small city in northern Iceland. It is Iceland's second largest urban area (after the Capital Region) and fourth largestmunicipality (after Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður, and Kópavogur).
Nicknamed the Capital of North Iceland, Akureyri is an important port and fishing centre. The area where Akureyri is located was settled in the 9th century but did not receive a municipal charter until 1786. The town was the site of Allied units during World War II. Further growth occurred after the war as the Icelandic population increasingly moved to urban areas.
The area has a relatively mild climate due to geographical factors, and the town's ice-free harbour has played a significant role in its history.
Eyjafjörður, Island Fjord, is the longest fjord in Iceland. It is located in the central north of the country, near the second-most populous area of Iceland.

ICELAND TRAVEL | Westfjords - Most underrated in Iceland?
Iceland’s west coast and westfjords might be the most underrated in Iceland! Check out our cinematic Iceland, west coast travel film to see what kind of magic you will find in the westfjords.
The first section of road from Reykjavik up to the west fjords leaves a bit to be desired but the rewards are epic. There are a couple things to note though about the west coast. Like the south you will need to get off the Ring Road to see some of the most popular sights, and much further off the Ring Road than in the South. For example, if you want to see Galdalf’s Hat (Kirkjufellsfoss (waterfall) with Kirkjufell Mountain background), you will need to make a detour of about an hour and a half. So that being said to really take in the west you will need some time and some patience.
Here is our Top 10 for West Iceland and the West Fjords:
Galdalf’s Hat (Kirkjufellsfoss (waterfall) with Kirkjufell Mountain background): One of the most iconic images you will see in Iceland is the perspective view of Kirkjufell mountain. You won’t even see it until you are just about to the photo spot, and the slim peak will finally come into view. It’s a short walk from the parking area off highway 54. If you’re lucky, you may even get a chance to get this picture with an Aurora borealis backdrop! EPIC!
Dynjandi (Fjallfoss): Dynjandi in the Wesfjords is a waterfall enthusiasts dream. This one of a kind cascading waterfall reaches 100 meters (324ft) in height and is complemented by over 10 smaller waterfalls that eventually lead into the sea. Rumor has it that you can actually go behind this waterfall in the right conditions but extreme caution MUST be taken. The space, we have heard, is quite tight.
Rauðasandur Beach (Red Sand Beach): Sunsets in the West Fjords are all incredible but from Raudasandur beach they become Epic. The already slightly pink hue of the sand turns bright red and is surrounded by orange glazed cliffs. The laterbjarg cliffs are famous in themselves for some of the best bird watching in Iceland.
Hornstrandir nature reserve: Hornstrandir is one of the most remote places along the coast of Iceland. As a result it is one of the best places to see some of the rarest flora and fauna as well as wildlife that roam the coastal highlands.
The Fjords: We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the actual fjords in our top ten. The dramatic and barren landscapes, complemented by deep marble blue waters come to life during dusk and into sunset. The fjords themselves are also home to many of Icelands whales and seals. Keep your eyes peeled!
Latrabjarg Cliffs: This stretch of roughly 8 miles of cliffs is perfect for you fellow drone fanatics and photographers. The cliffs protrude out of the water to over 1400 ft in some places. Again, this is an extremely popular spot to do bird watching including puffins!
Snæfellsnes Peninsula: The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a region in western Iceland known for its dramatic landscapes. At its western tip, Snæfellsjökull National Park is dominated by Snæfellsjökull Volcano, which is topped by a glacier. Nearby, a trail leads through lava fields to black-pebble Djúpalónssandur Beach.
Landbrotalaug Hot Pot: We visited over 10 different geothermal pools in Iceland and this was right at the top of the list for us. The pool is only big enough for two or three people which makes for a perfect romantic experience with your partner and one of natures most desirable swimming pools. The downside is that during the day there is usually a line of people waiting for their turn to experience Landbrotalaung. So keep track of where you are in line, try not to interrupt others private experience too much and for god sakes, limit your time int he pool to 20 minuets if there are people waiting. Don’t be that guy.
Garðar BA 64: This is the oldest ship in Iceland and has been beached for nearly 28 years after 69 years of service as a whaling ship, WWII vessile and finally a fishing boat. The rusty masterpiece is just off the coast and when the tide is right, becomes surrounded by a mirror like pool that can create some incredible reflection photography.
Hvalfjörður: The first of the fjords you will get to visit on your way up the south is Hvalfjordur. Glymur waterfall is probably the most well know tourist sight in the fjord but the whole area is a landscape lovers dream. It is one of the more controversial areas in Iceland as it has a long history of whaling and was one of the highest producing whaling operations in all of Iceland.

Iceland has a concentrated tourist season, peaking from mid-June through August. Many Icelanders think the summer tourists don't know what they're missing. Iceland offers plenty to do in spring, fall, even winter, and prices are dramatically lower for airfares, car rentals, and accommodations. Icelanders are avid Christmas celebrators, and the Aurora Borealis is remarkably vivid in winter. Most off-season visitors use Reykjavík as a home base, and combine city culture and nightlife with activities such as horseback riding, snowmobiling, and visiting spas.

Hostel – Hostel dorms cost between 3,500-7,500 ISK per night and Hosteling International members get 650 ISK off. Private rooms cost around 11,500 ISK per night for HI members, and for non-members, it is 12,500 ISK.
Hotels – Hotels are generally pricier than your hostels and guesthouses. One thing to keep in mind is that not all hotel rooms are going to have a private bathroom. You can expect to pay around 20,000 ISK and up per night for a double room with a private bathroom,
Average cost of food – Eating out, even on the cheap, costs about 1,300 ISK or more per meal. At this price point, you’re looking at sandwiches, kebabs, soups, and other “quick meals.” You can find small sandwiches for around 1,000 ISK at some of the outdoor kiosks. For main dishes from a sit-down restaurant with table service expect to pay at least 2,000 ISK. Happy hour beer is around 700 ISK, while non-happy prices range between 1,000-1,200 ISK. Groceries (basic pasta, eggs, skyr, rice, chicken, and some veggies) will cost 8,700 ISK per week. For cheap meals, consider the hot dog vendors that line the streets of major cities. They cost 400-500 ISK for a basic dog (without added toppings).
Transportation costs – During the summer months, you can purchase a countrywide bus pass for 42,000 ISK. Bus tickets start from 3.50 ISK (within Reykjavik for a single ride) to being free in some cities (like Akureyri). The popular bus route that runs from Reykjavik to Akureyri costs about 8,800 ISK. Car rentals cost about 5,350 ISK per day, with gas costing around 192 ISK per liter.

Tjörnes is a peninsula situated at the northeast of Iceland, between the fjords of Öxarfjörður and Skjálfandi. Tjörnes is known for its particularly dense population of Rock Ptarmigan and the rich fossil record of Miocene - Pliocene age.
Akureyri [ˈaːkʰʏrˌeiːrɪ] ( listen) is a town in northern Iceland. It is Iceland's second largest urban area (after the Greater Reykjavík area) and fourth largest municipality (after Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður, and Kópavogur).
Nicknamed the Capital of North Iceland, Akureyri is an important port and fishing centre, with a population of 17,754. The area where Akureyri is located was settled in the 9th century but did not receive a municipal charter until 1786.
Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters). The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for Brown Trout and Atlantic Salmon.
The name of the lake (Icelandic mý (midge) and vatn (lake); the lake of midges) comes from the huge numbers of midges to be found there in the summer.
