Memories of Idlewild Park - 2019 Historic Photography Show
This is a virtual tour of MEMORIES OF IDLEWILD PARK, the 18th annual Historic Photography Show hosted by the Pennsylvania Room at the Ligonier Valley Library in Ligonier, Pennsylvania from April 16 through July 9, 2019.
The 2019 Historic Photography Show celebrated the history of Idlewild and SoakZone, a much beloved amusement park in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Idlewild has charmed people across Western Pennsylvania and beyond since its origins as a 19th century picnic grove for the Ligonier Valley Rail Road. The Historic Photography Show showed how the Mellon family’s scenic picnic grounds evolved into a traditional amusement park in the 20th century and how Idlewild continues to delight generations as an award-winning family attraction today. Established in 1878, Idlewild and SoakZone is recognized as the oldest operating amusement park in Pennsylvania and the third oldest in the United States.
Local historian and author Jennifer Sopko guest curated the show, bringing together a fascinating collection of photographs and memorabilia discovered during the research for her 2018 book Idlewild: History and Memories of Pennsylvania’s Oldest Amusement Park.
According to the Ligonier Valley Library, The mission of the Historic Photography Show (as well as the smaller shows held throughout the year) is to present a facet of Ligonier Valley history that is interesting, educational and may have been overlooked in the past. In addition, the photographs and documents copied become a permanent part of the Pennsylvania Room collection. Please visit the Ligonier Valley Library at 120 West Main Street, Ligonier, PA 15658 to view past shows and explore the Pennsylvania Room's vast collection of books and materials. More information can be found at ligonierlibrary.org.
MANY THANKS to the Ligonier Valley Library, Pennsylvania Room Archivist Shirley McQuillis Iscrupe, the 2019 Historic Photography Committee, Idlewild and SoakZone and the many people who generously loaned photographs and items for MEMORIES OF IDLEWILD PARK. Thank you all for supporting and preserving a wonderful part of Ligonier Valley, Pennsylvania and amusement park history!

Wild Mouse Off Ride @ Idlewild & SoakZone
Opened in 1993 at Idlewild, Wild Mouse is the only wild mouse coaster built by Vekoma. The ride originally was built in 1985 at Wiener Prater in Vienna, Austria as Speeedy Gonzales and then moved to Alton Towers in Staffordshire, England as Alton Mouse in 1988 until Idlewild acquired it in 1993. Wild Mouse stands 53ft in the air among the tall trees and traverses through sharp turns, sudden drops, and a unique tilted lift hill in its 1,680ft of track.

Idlewild (Super) Round-up
(Super) Round-up at Idlewild. It is a Frank Hrubetz-built 42-seat park model Super Round-Up (Note that 24 and 30 seat models were just called Round-Up) consisting of a circular horizontal platform with vertical cage like wall around the edge. The platform is attached to a motor on a hydraulic arm. The ride starts out by spinning until the centrifugal force is enough to push riders against the wall. At that time, the friction between the riders' backs and the walls is enough to hold them against the wall. Then, the arm raises the horizontal platform to a vertical position in which riders, instead of spinning horizontally, are now spinning vertically. The ride spins for a predetermined cycle until an automatic timer releases the hydraulic fluid from the arm causing the platform to return to its horizontal position. The operator may be required to manually control the spin of the ride such that the ride's exit aligns correctly with the exit gate. Most Round ups require the rider to be at least 42 inches tall. In the UK this ride is commonly known as the 'Meteorite' or 'Meteor'. The first such ride to arrive in the UK was with Rose Brothers in the 1950s and the ride came from Germany. Although Hrubetz examples exist in the UK other common makes include Cadoxton and Sam Ward. This ride served at Kennywood (under the name Satellite) and was moved to Idlewild in 1984 and put in place of their smaller 30-seat model.

March 2009 - Precision Wagoneering
Another day off school and another morning goofing off in the backyard. Basically we gathered some old fence pieces, some soccer cones, and half of a pallet and we made courses down the hill. After a few runs we'd change the course around and see if we could make it again. Notice that with Tyler driving the wagon he can BOTH understeer AND oversteer it! The biggest crashes (sadly) were not captured on video-- Tyler did a couple barrel rolls and at least one end-over-end crash that was both spectacular and impressive. I know, I know, I'm not wearing a helmet-- well, I also don't crash into trees on purpose and *I* couldn't flip that wagon if I tried (I did).
