Hiking Camino de Santiago For A Cure - Day 8 (Darío)
Day 8: In honor of 11-year-old Darío from La Coruña, Spain
In August of 2017, Al DeCesaris took on an exciting endeavor to raise awareness and funds for Sturge-Weber Syndrome (SWS) research. His 31-day, 555-mile HIKING CAMINO DE SANTIAGO FOR A CURE journey began in St. Jean Pied-de-Port, France at the base of the Pyrenees Mountains and had him hiking the historic Camino de Santiago across the Iberian Peninsula to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain before reaching his final destination of Cape Finisterre overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Each day of Al’s journey of hope across Spain is dedicated to a different person living with SWS. Through this charitable event money is being raised to fund Sturge-Weber research. To support the efforts to find a cure for those living with Sturge-Weber Syndrome, please donate to medical research at

Places to see in ( Muxia - Spain )
Muxía is a coastal town and municipality in the province of A Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia in northwestern Spain. Muxía belongs to the comarca of Finisterre. Muxia is one of the final destinations for pilgrims on the Way of St. James after visiting the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in Santiago de Compostela.
Muxía is known for its spectacular beaches. Muxía has an active fishing industry. Muxía is part of the 'Costa da Morte' or 'Costa de la Muerte' (i.e., the Coast of Death). The Costa Da Morte was given this name because of the large number of shipwrecks along its rocky shore. The Costa Da Morte is one of the three regions of the Costa del Marisco, or The Seafood Coast.
Muxía is 3 kilometers from a famous Benedictine monastery that is now used as a church, the Church of San Xulián de Moraime. The name of the town, Muxía, refers to the monks who established this monastery. Another famous church in the area is the Santuario da Virxe da Barca which stands on a rocky ridge above the surf.
Pedra d'Abalar (rocker stone) in front of Nosa Señora da Barca church in Muxía . There are several locations along the Costa da Morte that have a pedra de abalar, (i.e., an oscillating stone), or rocking stone. One of these is in Muxía, the Pedra da Barca. These are large stones that are balanced on a point, so that they can be moved back and forth easily, or even wiggle in response to the wind. These were used at one time to determine the guilt or innocence of those accused of serious crimes. There was a serious oil spill involving the oil tanker Prestige along the Muxía part of the coast in November, 2002, leaking about 70,000 gallons of oil into the Atlantic.
Muxía was purchased by King Carlos of Castile (the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V) in the 16th century so he could have a more convenient port, and thus improve his kingdom's commerce and connections with England, where his cousin was Mary I. Muxía was destroyed in the 19th century by Napoleon´s forces.
( Muxia - Spain ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Muxia . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Muxia - Spain

The Roman Wall of Lugo, Tower of Hercules & La Corruña; Galicia, Spain
On our third port of disembarkation from Holland America's Zuiderdam in La
Corruña, Galicia, Spain, we visited the ancient Roman wall city of Lugo. The Roman walls of Lugo (Spanish, Galician: Muralla Romana de Lugo) were constructed in the 3rd century and are still largely intact today, stretching over 2 kilometers around the historic centre of Lugo in Galicia (Spain). The fortifications were inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in late 2000 as the finest example of late Roman fortifications in western Europe. The walls have also held Spanish monument status (Bien de Interés Cultural) since 1921.
During our departure we saw the millennial Tower of Hercules (Farum Brigantium), also said to be modeled after
the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Tower of Hercules build by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century BCE was renovated in the 18th century adding 21 meters to the original 34. In 1926 it was equipped with electricity. It is the World's oldest lighthouse, still active today.
Its name is derived from two myths according to a Wikipedia reference:
Through the millennia many mythical stories of its origin have been told. According to a myth that blends Celtic and Greco-Roman elements, the hero Hercules slew the giant tyrant Geryon after three days and three nights of continuous battle. Hercules then—in a Celtic gesture— buried the head of Geryon with his weapons and ordered that a city be built on the site. The lighthouse atop a skull and crossbones representing the buried head of Hercules’ slain enemy appears in the coat-of-arms of the city of Corunna.
Another legend embodied in the 11th-century Irish compilation Lebor Gabála Érenn— the Book of Invasions— King Breogán, the founding father of the Galician Celtic nation, constructed a massive tower of such a grand height that his sons could see a distant green shore from its top. The glimpse of that distant green land lured them to sail north to Ireland. According to the legend Breogán's descendants stayed in Ireland and are the Celtic ancestors of the current Irish people. A colossal statue of Breogán has been erected near the Tower.

Mt Teide and Las Canadas National Park, Tenerife, Canary Islands
Mt Teide (Tay-day), an active volcano 3718 meters in elevation, is the highest mountain in all of Spain. Located in Las Canadas National Park on the island of Tenerife, Teide is the world's 3rd tallest Volcano after Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in Hawaii, and its elevation makes it the world's 10th highest island. In 1492 as Columbus sailed past Tenerife, he reported seeing a great fire over the Orotava Valley, thus interpereted as an eruption. At 40 km across at its max, the parent crater, Las Canadas formed 160,000+ years before Columbus' New World Expedition. Mt Teide's resulting 16km x 9 km crater is what you see here today. For comparison Mt St Helens 1980 eruption created a direct blast zone of about 13 km in radius. Imagine the terror in the hearts of Columbus and his crewmen as they sailed by this caticlissmic event, and toward what was thought the edge of the world at that time by many.

Pilgrimage Schmilgrimage: Unexpected Bumps on the Camino - August 3, 2014
Speaker: Joyce Thierry Llewellyn
After planning to walk 800 peaceful, introspective kilometres of the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage trail across Spain on her own, Joyce’s trip became anything but that. She found herself part of a trio of family members trekking through muddy paths on one cold, rainy day after another, while dealing with long distance family health problems and a growing impatience with hostel snorers. Her interior Camino question changed from “What should I do next with my life?” to an out loud grumbling, “Am I just too old and grouchy to walk the Way?” Her “yes” answer came with some surprises.
About Joyce: Joyce Thierry Llewellyn has been an active member of NSUC for 23 years, working on many committees and as a Youth Advisor and a teacher and North American trainer of teachers of three “Our Whole Lives” sexuality programs. Her work as a film and television screenwriter, story editor, and travel writer has allowed her to become a mini-expert in an eclectic selection of subjects, which pleases her nosey writer self. Joyce and her husband Evan walked 1600km of the 1,000 year old Camino pilgrimage route in 2011 and returned with their knees and marriage intact.

Mount Teide (Spanish: El Teide, Pico del Teide, pronounced [ˈpiko ðel ˈtei̯ðe], Teide Peak) is a volcano on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. Its summit (at 3,718 m (12,198 ft))[disputed – discuss] is the highest point in Spain and the highest point above sea level in the islands of the Atlantic.
If measured from the ocean floor, it is at 7,500 m (24,600 ft) the highest volcano in the world base-to-peak outside of the Hawaiian Islands,[a] and is described by UNESCO and NASA as Earth's third-tallest volcanic structure.[5][6][b] Teide's elevation makes Tenerife the tenth highest island in the world. Teide is an active volcano: its most recent eruption occurred in 1909 from the El Chinyero vent on the northwestern Santiago rift. The United Nations Committee for Disaster Mitigation designated Teide a Decade Volcano[7] because of its history of destructive eruptions and its proximity to several large towns, of which the closest are Garachico, Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz. Teide, Pico Viejo and Montaña Blanca form the Central Volcanic Complex of Tenerife.

Monaco travel guide
The world's most deluxe country.
Passing through Eze sur Mer, but were not stopping because we are heading to Monaco, the world's second-smallest country, after the Vatican, less than a square mile in size. It's been a sovereign nation since 1861 when it gained independence from France, and it's a full member of the United Nations -- small, but filled with beautiful contrast, one of the world's most deluxe places.
The Tourist Information office in the train station is a great place to stop and pick up some brochures and you can get a free city map here and you'll find they are very helpful.
And yet despite this diminutive size, there is contrast in Monaco: You've got the Old Town and you've got the new ultra-modern town...you've got the waterfront and you've got the hillside...there are beautiful flowers and gardens and historic sites.
This program will focus on the two main areas for the visitor: The old town and Monte Carlo with the casino and elegant shopping area.
Monaco is more than twice as densely populated as the second most crowded country, which is Singapore. That's with a population density in Monaco of about 47,000 people per square mile, compared to Singapore with about 20,000 people per square mile.
Now this is really crowded compared to other European countries. For example, the UK has got about 700 people per square mile, Italy 500 people per square mile. So we are talking about a very crowded and packed in place, this Monaco, and yet they manage it amazingly well. Perhaps this is a model for the other big cities of the world, showing how to grow and how to plan your city.
Several cities in the world have got twice the population density of Monaco, including Dacca, the most crowded city in the world, the capital of Bangladesh, Manila and Mumbai. Other cities that are more crowded include in India, Delhi and Calcutta, also Hong Kong, and Paris is more densely populated; Bogotá, Karachi, Cairo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, Manila and even Paris. And yet Monaco does a very good job of organizing the people who live here into beautiful buildings and lovely neighborhood, so they're doing a great job in handling that population. The might even be considered a model for the rest of the urbanizing areas of the world.
Monaco gained its independence back and 1489, and had a protectorate with Spain for about 100 years and, and then with France, and then with Sardinia up until 1860.
Monaco became independent from France in 1861.
And today it's a sovereign nation represented in the United Nations.
It's surrounded by France and there is a military arrangement where it's defended by France.
Monaco is quite active on the international scene with consulates in 72 different countries, and within Monaco, there are 65 countries that have embassies, along with 75 nations with consular offices, so this is by no means a small, isolated place. It's very much part of Europe.
The economy will surprise you. You might think that all of the revenues are gained from the gambling casino and related gambling ventures, but actually gambling represents only 3% of the nation's revenue of the nation's revenue, the GDP.
The present casino was first inaugurated in 1863 and gradually grew an expanded ever since. It's an elaborate structure with the principal façade fronting the town in the south façade overlooking the sea. The earliest portion was rebuilt in 1878 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the grand opera house in Paris.
Of course gambling was very important back in the 19th century when it was just getting started. The first casino was opened in 1856.
The principal entrance of the casino is between two towers with domes of colored tiles, and flanked by statues of the Seine and the Mediterranean.
The south façade has three arcades with Venetian mosaics and two slender towers, and niches at the side with statues representing music and dance.
To arrive on the terraces of Monte Carlo at twilight on a springtime or autumn evening is one of the great episodes in one's life.

Ascending Mt Teide, Tenerife April 2013
During a trip to Tenerife in late April 2013, I took the cable car up Mt Teide on the island before having a look around among the lava which over many years has poured out of the currently dormant volcano.
