Yangon trip ( Rangoon ), Myanmar ( Burma )
The stunningly Shwedagon Pagoda and sincerely Burmese pilgrims were really touched on my heart; also noticed Burmese people especially in tourist attraction areas were very attentive to their tourist guests.
Tom's Travels: Burma/Myanmar 2008 - The Pagodas of Yangon (Rangoon)
In Easter 2008, I visited Burma (Myanmar) - home to a totalitarian military dictatorship.
As a tourist, I was careful to minimise any money going to the government infrastructure and was welcomed by the Burmese people throughout the country. There are no right or wrong answers in response to whether or not foreigners should visit Burma - but all who choose to go should ensure they do extensive reading before and during their travels. Yangon (Burmese: ရန်ကုန်; MLCTS: rankun mrui, pronounced [jàŋɡòũ mjo̰]; also known as Rangoon) is a former capital of Burma and the capital of Yangon Division. Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006,[3] Yangon, with a population of four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center.
Yangon's infrastructure is undeveloped compared to those of other major cities in Southeast Asia. Yangon has the largest number of colonial buildings in Southeast Asia today.[4] While many high-rise residential and commercial buildings have been constructed or renovated throughout downtown and Greater Yangon in the past two decades, most satellite towns that ring the city continue to be deeply impoverished.
The largest and best maintained parks in Yangon are located around Shwedagon Pagada. To the southeast of the gilded stupa is the most popular recreational area in the city Kandawgyi Lake. The 150 acre (60.7-hectare) lake is surrounded by the 110 acre (44.5-hectare) Kandawgyi Nature Park,[24] and the 69.25 acre (28-hectare) Yangon Zoological Gardens, which consists of a zoo, an aquarium and an amusement park.[25] West of the pagoda towards the former Hluttaw (Parliament) complex is the 130 acre (53-hectare) Peoples Square and People's Park, (the former parading ground on important national days when Yangon was the capital.)[26] A few miles north of the pagoda lies the 37 acre (15-hectare) Inya Lake Park a favorite hangout place of Yangon University students, and a well-known place of romance in Burmese popular culture.
Hlawga National Park and Allied War Memorial at the outskirts of the city are popular day-trip destinations with the well-to-do and tourists.

MYANMAR MM (BURMA) Yangon (RANGOON) MANDALAY IRRAWADDY RIVER JAN., 1976

Mandalay
Mandalay
This sprawling cultural centre is the most Burman of Myanmar's cities. It was the last capital of Myanmar before the British took over and is the country's second-largest city. Highlights of Mandalay include Shwenandaw Kyaung, the sole remaining building of the once extravagant moated palace.
Also look out for Mandalay Hill, with its spiralling stairways, temples and sweeping views; and the ancient Rakhine Buddha image at Mahamuni Paya. Bustling markets with produce and handicrafts from all over Upper Myanmar are another feature of Mandalay.
Here are market place photos.

Burma Myanmar tour Christmas in Rangoon
These photos were taken by Ken Osetroff during the 2008 Toursgallery small group tour in Burma ( Myanmar). Help us support the private enterprise business owners in Burma. These friendly people need tourists so that their privately owned restaurants, hotels, buses and attractions can survive. Join this small group tour that departs every December. This is a 15 day escorted tour, off the beaten track, in the footsteps of Rudyard Kipling. People who boycot Burma are only hurting the citizens of Burma. Individual business owners in Burma are relying on the few dollars, that the very few visitors do spend, in order for them to survive. toursgallery.com
Have Christmas Dinner in the historic Strand Hotel in Rangoon and start the tour with accommodation in The Governors Residence Hotel, have a 2 nights cruise on Irrawaddy River, then head upcountry into the less developed parts of Burma.

Yangon the capital of Myanmar with the wonderful ShweDagon pagoda.
Yangon is the capital of Myanmar with as highlight the ShweDagon pagoda, one of the most fascinating conglomerations of Buddhist pagodas I have seen. It feels somewhere as the centre of the Buddhist Universe on this planet.
Close to the ShweDagon pagoda is Kandawgyi Lake, a very relaxing place in the midst of a busy city. It has a fairy tale floating restaurant and several other interesting tourist attractions.
The city center of Yangon is a combination of British colonial architecture, Buddhist stupas, Hindu temples and Muslim mosques. Yangon has several lively and colorful markets, also in the evening
If you take a hotel in the center all the attractions are at walking distance.

Tom's Travels: Burma/Myanmar 2008 - Yangon (Rangoon) Circular Railway
In Easter 2008, I visited Burma (Myanmar) - home to a totalitarian military dictatorship.
As a tourist, I was careful to minimise any money going to the government infrastructure and was welcomed by the Burmese people throughout the country. I felt the US$1 spent on the Circular Railway was worth the interactions it bought with local people from all around the city - I spoke to journalists, students, military-men and ex-civil servants about the situation in the country. I returned to Hong Kong and launched the HK Free Burma website @

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)
