Imamiya Shrine Osaka Celebrates Ebessan | JAPAN Forward
Full Story ????
The Toka Ebisu Festival, known as ”Ebessan” among the locals, has just been held at Osaka’s Imamiya Ebisu Shrine.
Every year just after the first week of January, worshippers congregate here to collect a lucky bamboo branch — and pray to the god of prosperous business.
This is but one of the festivities which dot Japan at the start of the New Year, as celebrants flock to shrines to pay their first respects of the year in what is known as hatsumode.
As you entered the Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, music was playing and people were crying, “Bring good business quickly!” Welcoming celebrants were 50 young women known as fukumusume (literally, “lucky daughters”), dressed in traditional attire, which included a tall, semicircle-shaped hat.
According to the Japan Tourism Association, the position of fukumusume is much sought after, with approximately 3000 women applying every year for the 50 positions at Imamiya Ebisu Shrine. This makes the acceptance rate more difficult than most elite universities.

Kyoto Festival: Tōka Ebisu at Ebisu Shrine [4K]
The first major festival in the new year, Tōka Ebisu is held at Kyoto Ebisu Shrine over a five-day period from January 8th to the 12th. The enshrined god, Ebisu, is one of the Seven Lucky Gods and considered the god of fishermen and commerce. The festival is based around Ebisu's birthday on the 10th- hence the name Tōka (Tenth Day) Ebisu. Though the religious ceremonies are primarily performed before the main hall out of sight from visitors, numerous goings on occur on the shrine grounds on each day as people flock to the small Gion area shrine in order to pray for success in their businesses for the coming year.
A lively festival, locals and tourists alike mingle to pray, purchase lucky charms for the coming year to display in their businesses, and enjoy the tasty festival food stalls gathered in the area while Ebisu's song rings out intermittently. In front of a small altar a shrine maiden performs sacred kagura dances to bless branches of leafy green bamboo for parishioners to receive and other maidens are quite busy helping people select which lucky symbols they wanted to attach to the stalk. On certain days women in traditional clothing, (one day actresses, one day maiko), arrive at the shrine to pass out the lucky bamboo. Depending on what day you participate you can watch a variety of rituals such as mochi making, a palanquin procession, and the presentation of a lucky fish.

アキーラさん散策!大阪・今宮戎神社・十日戎!Imamiya-Ebisu-Shrine,Osaka,Japan

Toka Ebisu festival (Ebessan), Imamiya Ebisu Shrine, Osaka 十日戎 えべっさん 今宮戎神社 大阪 by Kari Gröhn, karigrohncom
Osaka loves Toka Ebisu festival (Ebessan). Ebisu is the patron deity of business, sailors and fishermen. Ebisu is generally represented as a fat, smiling, bearded fisherman holding a fishing
rod and a large sea bream.
The merchants have great faith in Ebisu. He is said to be hard of hearing because too many people came shouting what they wished. So they have to beat the gong at the back of the main shrine building after they offer money in the coffer at the front.
The visitors come along the promenade shouting business is thriving, so bring out the bamboo. They buy fukuzasa, good luck bamboo decorated with models of tai (a sea bream), koban (an old Japanese gold coin) and komedawara (a straw rice bag), from fukumusume, maidens of fortune.
Many people believe that Ebisu is Hiruko, the first child of Izanagi and Izanami, born without bones, arms and legs due to his mother's transgression during the marriage ritual. Hiruko was cast to the sea in a boat of reeds before his third birthday. He eventually washed ashore in Hokkaido and was cared for by the Ainu people. The weak child grew legs and the rest of his skeletal structure, and became the god Ebisu. He remains slightly crippled and deaf, but mirthful and auspicious nonetheless.
In the Edo period Ebisu's festival was celebrated on the twentieth day of the tenth month, the month without gods. While the other eight million members of the Japanese pantheon gather at the Grand Shrine of Izumo, Ebisu does not hear the summons and is thus still available for worship.
