IMOGIRI Myth of Royal Cemetery Stairs

Myth is a sacred story told as a part of a world view / religious belief system and used to make concreate abstract concepts about cosmic and sociental origins (Lechner, 303).
Myth is something that live around us, we can not pretend that there is no myth at all at our surrounding we might be do not realize that we actually here a lot of saying about myth because it has lived among us and become part of us so that we might not realize that. Yogyakarta as a province in Indonesia that still strongly believe about myth and other stories has a lot of myth, urban legend, folktales, etc among the people there. One of the myths in Yogyakarta is about the stairs to Kings Cemetery Mataram Area. People say that if they count the stairs each people will get different result. People think that it may be because of supra natural spirit that exist there. There is also belief that if you count correctly then your life will be full of luck. This myth is a popular myth in Yogyakarta and a lot of people are curious and want to prove about the myth. And as the myth says, a lot of people got different result of counting the stairs which make the myth even stronger among the people.
Kings Cemetery Mataram Area itself was built in 1632 and is being symbolized by the first group of stairs that is counted as 32. The main area which is the cemeteries of the Kings was divided to 2 areas. The first one, at the west side of the main area is the cemeteries of Solo area and the second one which is at the east side of the main area is Yogyakarta area. It is parted that way because long time ago, Mataram Kingdom was divided to 2 areas. Eventhough they were under kingdom named Mataram Islam but up until now they still divided into two whether it is the cemeteries and even the palace (keraton) itself.
According to Mr. Sipar, a guide in Kings Cemetery Mataram Area that has been guiding since he is 10 years old because his house is in that complex, the numbers of the stairs are in exact numbers. The numbers of the stairs have different meaning or symbolizing different things like 32 that symbolizing 1632 as the year of Kings Cemetery Mataram Area was built. The reasons why people have different result of numbers are because they might be get exhausted during the trip, or the count so fast that makes they do not count correctly. Those reasons are actually make sense because if they are exhausted they can not stay focus so that they may count not in accurate way.
However if there are people who still believe so, there is supra natural spirit that exist in the area and affects the people who counting the stairs, we have to respect them. Because everyone has different perspective and we can not force them fit to our standard.

A Form of Culture: The Traditional Clothes to Wear when Visiting Imogiri Royal Cemetery (Kings' Graves)
Imogiri Cemetery, in which are found the Mataram, Yogyakarta, and Surakarta kings’ graves, was built around the 16th century, during the reign of Prabu Hanyokrokusumo. The cemetery is located in Imogiri, Bantul, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta.
The cemetery is maintained by a number of staffs with the head of charge being called as lurah makam. The one who is currently in the position is Slamet Abdurrohman. People will be able to visit the cemetery during Mondays, Fridays, Sundays.
People who want to visit the graves are expected to wear traditional clothes in certain manner. This custom was what we researched. We were intrigued about these questions:
1. how are the rules of wearing the traditional clothes for males and females
2. are there any prohibited motifs of the clothes?
3. is there any exception for the rules?
4. how do people see these rules?
Method used to find out the answers was interview. Our interviewee for the first third questions was Slamet Abdurrohman, the lurah makam of the cemetery.
First, the rules for males. Males are expected to wear long piece of cloth with traditional Yogyakarta or Surakarta motifs on it. Males are given the choice to go bare-chested or wear long-sleeved shirt named as baju peranakan. Males are expected to wear traditional head cover and go to the graves with bare feet. Next, the rules for females. Females are expected to wear long piece of cloth with traditional Yogyakarta or Surakarta motifs on it. Females must wear kemben, which is cloth to cover the upper part of their bodies, made from batik cloth. Females are expected to not wear any kind of jewelry or any head-scarf. Females are also expected to go the graves with bare feet.
For the second question, Slamet Abdurrohman said there is also special rule regarding the long piece of cloth worn to cover people’s lower bodies. The patterns could come from both Yogyakarta or Surakarta traditional motifs, but motifs from other regions are not allowed. Motif Parang Barong is not allowed since it is strictly for the kings.
These rules apply to everyone, with only one exception which are the children of the Kings. The daughters of sultan (current governor of Yogyakarta), for example, do not wear kemben. Instead, they wear kebaya. Other than that, there are no exceptions. According to the lurah makam, this condition of no exception is due to the obligation to preserve the tradition. The tradition of wearing traditional clothes when paying visit to the graves has been done for a long time, and Slamet Abdurrohman said it will be kept that way.
For the fourth question, there were three interviewees. Our first interviewee was Prof. Dr. Inajati Andrisijanti from Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. She said people go to the royal cemetery to visit and pay respect to their ancestors, thus they have to wear suitable clothes. That means wearing kemben and baju peranakan because it has been tradition, regardless of what people think about the kemben part especially, since it doesn’t cover females’ body fully as required from some religions.
Our second interviewee was Mrs. Sulistiyani. She was one of the member group of prayers from Delanggu. She said that even though she went to this area of royal cemetery, she didn't visit the graves of the kings. The reason was that because she didn't want to take of her headscarf (which was essential to her religion) and her clothes, and then change the attire into the required traditional clothes.
While the third interviewee was Slamet Abdurrohman, the lurah makam of the royal cemetery himself. He said indeed there were people who protested regarding the traditional clothes. It was because the rules were against some beliefs, which were that females have to cover their bodies properly. But here, the staffs of the cemetery still maintain the whole tradition as had been assigned from keraton (the palace), saying it was “nindakke dhawuh saking kraton” (doing orders from the palace). Another thing to note that this tradition has been practiced generations ago, and is always passed down from one generation to another generation.

Penasaran seperti apa? Simak videonya

SENDANG SELIRAN KOTAGEDE
Sendang Seliran is located in the area of Mataram King Cemetery in Kotagede.
While Kotagede itself is located in the South East of Yogayakarta City. Before entering
Sendang Seliran, the visitors will walk over the gate that connects the yard of the area
and the Great Mosque of Mataram. After that, in the south of the Mosque, there is
a second gate that connects the Mosque and the security post. In this security post,
there are a lot of abdi dalem or juru kunci that welcome the visitors before entering
the cemetery. Every visitors should write their name in the book for visitors, and abdi
dalem will serve the visitor in a very good way.
In the south of the security center, the visitors who want to visit Sendang Seliran
will walk over the gate again. Sendang Seliran is divided into two place. In the south
area there is a Sendang Putri for female visitors, and in the west area there is a Sendang
Kakung for male visitors. So, once upon a time, Patih Panembahan wanted to pray, but
there wasn't any water at all. Then, he stomped the ground three times, and the water
appeared. It's what we called Sendang Seliran nowdays. Seliran is derived from java
language that means ‘itself', because Patih Panembahan did it by himself.
Sendang Seliran has three water resources. In the Sendang Kakung, there is a
well for visitors who want to wash their faces, hands, or foots. Some visitors also fill the
bottle with that water in order to take it home. Besides that, there are a lot of catfishes in
the center pond, and some of them are white catfishes. Mr. Hastono Purwanto as abdi
dalem said that a long time ago, there was an invisible catfish called Truno Lele. It was
a catfish with only a head and thorns, but not every people could see it. Only a special
people could see this catfish.
People believe that water of Sendang Seliran could give health, salvation, or
even success. There is no clear history how this water is believed by people could give
those things. But Mr. Hastono said that it's just their belief, and maybe this belief began
when there were people who think that it was not just an ordinary water, and then they
took a bath in that Sendang. The day after, they really became success or recovered
from their illness. From this speculation, people started to believe that the water of
Sendang Seliran could give them health, success, and salvation.
One of the visitor is Mr. Darmadi, he comes from Klaten. He said that his family
is the ancestry of Patih Panembahan, and it's a tradition for his family to take a bath
using the water of Sendang Seliran, at least once in their lifetimes. He thinks that this
water is only a mediator between people and God. One day, there were two people
in his family that didn't recover from their illness eventhough they've gone to many
hospitals. Then they visited Sendang Seliran and took a bath using that water. After that,
they recovered.
Before the visitors use the water, usually they do praying by putting the flowers
and burning the incense. The prayer is spoken in old javanese, which is usually called
Kawi. After praying, usually the visitors feed the catfish while mentioning their wishes
using Kawi. People still believe that the water of Sendang Seliran could give health and
salvation until now.

Sultan Jogja is Prohibited To Be Here
Kraton Ngayogyakarta is one of the most interesting places in Yogyakarta. Located in the centre of Yogyakarta city, Kraton Ngayogyakarta is the house of Sultan, the King or governor of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. It was begin to build after Perjanjian Giyanti or in English we know as Giyanti Treaty in 1755 which divide Mataram kingdom into two regions, Kasunanan Surakarta Hadiningrat and Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat or Kraton Ngayogyakarta. There are many interesting things about it. However, the most interesting one is the myths in Kraton Ngayogyakarta.[
According to Lechner, myths are considered sacred stories that deal with origins and explanations of natural phenomena and human institutions. Kraton Ngayogyakarta has been infamous of its myths, since it was built after Giyanti Treaty in1755. One of the myths which is very intriguing is the prohibition for Sultan to pilgrimage to Kotagede, the cemetery of ancestors of Islamic Mataram Kingdom. This project is focused on what actually the prohibition is, for whom the prohibition is made, and what the effect is if Sultan breaks the rule.
King of Mataram Cemetery in Kotagede is a place where many ancestors of Islamic Mataram Kingdom are rested. There are Nyai Ageng Nis, Sultan Hadiwijaya who was the King of Pajang, Ki Ageng Pemanahan who was the founder of Mataram Kingdom, Panembahan Senopati who was the first King in this Kingdom, and so many more. Even Sultan Hamengkubuwono II is also rested in this cemetery. Since there are many ancestors of Mataram Kingdom are rested here, many pilgrims from the ordinary people to the Royal family often visit this place. However, there is an exception for Sultan, the one who leads the kingdom or kraton in Javanese. He is banned to do pilgrimage to King of Mataram Cemetery in Kotagede. According to the informant, a woman who helps the visitors, the “Sultan” here means Sultan (or King) from Mataram Kingdom until Sultan of Kraton Ngayogyakarta. She said, if Sultan does pilgrimage, there will be something bad. Therefore, usually Royal families who often visit the Cemetery are the children and grandchildren of Sultan. Even though, before his designation as the King, the Sultan is still allowed to pilgrimage the cemetery of his ancestors.
The other informant, the guide in Kraton, said the same thing. He added that the point is when he becomes Sultan, he cannot do pilgrimage in the ancestors’ cemetery. He said that Sultan is prohibited because he has to worship his ancestors. It will be strange if the one who is worshiped by people has to worship others. That is the reason why Sultan is banned to pilgrimage. It happens not only the tomb of Panembahan Senopati, which is located in Kotagede but also the others including Sultan Hamengkubuwono I until IX who were rested in Imogiri Cemetery. He is prohibited to pilgrimage in the Cemetery for Kings of both Yogyakarta and Surakarta for the fact that Yogyakarta and Surakarta were brother.
The prohibition is true, Sultan is banned to pilgrimage to the cemetery of his Ancestor not only in Kotagede, where panembahan Senopati and others were rested, but also in Imogiri where Sultan Hamengkubuwono I until IX were rested. However, he is still allowed to pilgrimage to cemetery before his designation as a king. One possible reason is that is odd for the one who is worshiped by many people has to worship his ancestor when he does pilgrimage. And up to now, there is no Sultan that has come to the cemetery of the ancestors, because according to Bascom myth is a prose of narrative which is believed as true by the member of the society that still holds the myth. So we have not find what will happen if Sultan does pilgrimage.
