Swell Lodge Video
A luxury eco-lodge has been approved inside the national park of Christmas Island, returning the remote, wildlife-filled Australian territory to the centre of attention for the right reasons after more than a decade of detention centre debacles.
Construction of Swell Lodge’s solar-powered, glass-fronted eco-chalets along a 500m section of coastline will commence later this year, and is the first such eco-accommodation allowed inside any of the Commonwealth national parks which include Uluru, Kakadu and Norfolk Island. As Judy West, Acting Director of National Parks said, “(The) eco-style accommodation will allow travellers to immerse themselves in one of Australia’s most extraordinary national parks. (The) Swell Lodge proposal is a win-win for Christmas Island National Park and tourism to the island.”
In April 2016, Parks Australia put out a public call for ‘Expressions of Interest’ for commercial opportunities inside the Christmas Island national park, and the Bray’s - who already run small-group, luxury photo tours around the world, including to Christmas Island – applied. “A lot of work went into ensuring the design would have minimal impact” Chris says, “including being pole mounted and using modern, odourless compositing toilets, as well as having an independent environmental impact assessment carried out involving ecologist site surveys both day and night.” Giving final approval from Parks Australia this week, Judy West says “He has passed all the stringent environmental requirements to operate within the national park, and we look forward to sharing the world famous conservation values of Christmas Island with his guests.”

Carl Vogelsang
Carl Vogelsang grew up on Christmas Island, and in his heart, he’s not really ever left it. This month however, he returned (in the flesh) with his family for the first time since leaving the island as a teenager. This must have been a pretty emotional trip. So how did it go? We had to ask…

Night Swim with World's Largest Shark - Christmas Island
Would you jump in? At the right time of year, this amazing gathering of Manta Rays and Whale Sharks occurs off the coast of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. By day you can find whale sharks cruising around, but they are really just filling in time, waiting for the feeding frenzy at night, when the ocean fills with plankton and all the whale sharks gather along the coast - even in the shallows - to feast! Not many people get the chance to do this!
An Introduction to Christmas Island Indian Ocean - Steven Tan Documentary 1977 (1/8)
The Territory of Christmas Island is a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It is located 2,600 kilometres (1,600 mi) northwest of the Western Australian city of Perth, 360 km (220 mi) south of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and 975 km (606 mi) ENE of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands.
It has a population of 1,403 residents who live in a number of settlement areas on the northern tip of the island: Flying Fish Cove (also known as Kampong), Silver City, Poon Saan, and Drumsite.
The island's geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism among its flora and fauna, which is of significant interest to scientists and naturalists. 63% of its 135 square kilometres (52 sq mi) is an Australian national park. There exist large areas of primary monsoonal forest.
Phosphate, deposited originally as dead marine organisms (not guano as often thought), has been mined on the island for many years.
