Indian River Delaware Inlet Bridge - 2012
The Indian River Inlet Bridge (officially the Charles W. Cullen Bridge) is a cable-stayed bridge located in Sussex County, Delaware in the United States. It carries four lanes of Delaware Route 1 (DE 1) over the Indian River Inlet between the Indian River Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The bridge is within Delaware Seashore State Park between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach. The Indian River Inlet Bridge is maintained by the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT). The bridge is 2,600 feet (790 m) long and 107.66 feet (32.81 m) wide, with a span of 950 feet (290 m) and overhead clearance of 45 feet (14 m).
Prior to the current bridge, four other bridges have spanned the Indian River Inlet, opened in 1934, 1940, 1952, and 1965, the latter widened by an additional span added in 1976. All were known informally as the Indian River Inlet Bridge, and all but the first officially were named the Charles W. Cullen Bridge. The 1965 bridge, a steel girder bridge, was subject to scouring from the inlet, leading to the need to replace it. Initial plans for an tied-arch bridge over the inlet in 2004 were over budget, and 2006 plans for a 1,400-foot (427-meter) cable-stayed bridge were cancelled because of early construction and legal problems. Construction of the current, 2,600-foot (792-meter) bridge began in 2008 as part of a design-build project, with Skanska awarded the contract to build the bridge. The current Indian River Inlet Bridge opened partially in January 2012 and completely in May 2012 at a cost of $150 million.

Video of the Indian River Bay Bridge at the Delaware Seashore State Park (Rohoboth Beach)
Here is a quick video I took of the Indian River Bay. The bay lies between Dewey Beach and Bethany Beach. You can also see Rohoboth Beach. We stayed at the Delaware Seashore State Park which is one of the nicest RV parks that we have stayed at.
The Other Side Of DelMarVa: Indian River Inlet
*The Indian River is a river and estuary, approximately 15 mi (24 km) long, in Sussex County in southern Delaware in the United States.[1] The river is named after a Native American reservation that was located on its upper reaches.
The Indian River rises approximately 2 miles (3 km) southwest of Georgetown and flows east, past Millsboro, its head of navigation. It enters Indian River Bay, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean south of Cape Henlopen. The lower 6 miles (10 km) of the river form a navigable tidal estuary stretching westward from Indian River Bay, which is protected from the open ocean by two sand bar peninsulas. East of the bay is its mouth, the Indian River Inlet.[2] Until 1928, the Indian River Inlet was a natural waterway that shifted up and down a two-mile (3.2 km) stretch of the coast. Dredging kept the inlet open in its current location between 1928 and 1937, and in 1938 the United States Army Corps of Engineers built jetties that hold it in place.[3]
The Indian River Inlet bridge, looking north
Roads cross the river in three places, at U.S. Route 113 (in Millsboro), Delaware Route 24/Delaware Route 30 (also in Millsboro), and Delaware Route 1 (at Indian River Inlet in the Delaware Seashore State Park). With the Indian River Inlet in a fixed place beginning in 1928, it became possible to build a bridge to span it, and the completion of the Ocean Highway (present-day Delaware Route 1 and now known as Coastal Highway) between Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach in 1933 prompted Delaware to build a span to connect the northern and southern segments of the highway. Since 1934, six bridges have spanned the inlet, all known informally as the Indian River Inlet Bridge, although all but the first officially were named the Charles W. Cullen Bridge.[3] The current Indian River Inlet Bridge opened in 2012.[4]

Leading reporter Barry Kay reports on the new & old bridges that span the Indian River Inlet in Southern Delaware. We will explore the problems that have plagued the Indian River Inlet for many years with the old bridge and the new bridge. A Swedish company built the new $150 million dollar bridge that couldn't possibly be built today by an American company in these horrible economic times. Renourishing Delaware's beaches and dunes
Awarded $30 million in federal dollars, Delaware will use the money to restore its beaches and dunes to pre-Sandy conditions. Some argue beach replenishment throws good money after bad, but if you ask the state, it's money well spent.

Flight Over Bethany Beach & Indian River Bridge
First time using a GoPro in the cockpit several days ago when I flew out of Georgetown, DE and over Bethany Beach, DE. This clip shows our route of flight from the west and over the Indian River. I turned to the south to fly beyond Sea Colony and then over the ocean and back to the north, turning back to the west at the Indian River Bridge.
