Handcrafted Textiles Come To Life in India | Steven Alan + west elm
Designer Steven Alan and west elm president Jim Brett travel to India to create a special collection of textiles that are completely handcrafted using traditional techniques.
Along the way they meet master artisans, watch their ideas go from watercolor sketches to finished textiles, and prove that if you're having more fun, the product is always more exciting.
Through 2015, west elm has made a commitment to paying $35 million directly to artisans and hand-crafters in 15 countries. We're directly impacting the lives of 4,500 artisan workers and 18,000 family members.

Block Printing (Glimpse) Jaipur, India
Block Printing of Fabrics. Jaipur, India
Woodblock printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles, usually of linen, cotton or silk, by means of incised wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing. Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method.
The Indigo Collection | Pottery Barn
Our new Indigo Collection of home decor accents is the perfect combination of rich color and beautiful design aesthetic, typical to Pottery Barn. MJ Hughes, a textile designer for Pottery Barn talks about the characteristics of Indigo.
We were inspired by Indigo for many reasons. It is the color of choice for many artisans who work with their hands or the Earth. Derived from the Indigo plant, the ancient dye has been in use for the last 2500 years. The plants grow all around the world. The method of extracting the dye from the Indigo leaves is fascinating.
Some methods, for instance, the one in Jaipur, India have been in place since the last four generations. Each generation made a unique creation by adding more dye and other active ingredients. At first, the dyed fabric is bright green. It acquires the distinctive color when exposed to sunlight and air. This dye is a wonderful choice for home decor accents like bedding as the shades of blue can range from light sky blue to deep eggplant. Each shade is unique as it is never achieved twice.
Whether, it's bedding or other linens, the beauty of these home decor accessories depend on the artistry of the maker and chance. The unpredictability of Indigo makes it a beautiful choice for decorating your home.

A documentary excerpt showing how Avani ( is helping to revitalize a tradition of textiles and natural dying that faltered after Kumaon trade routes with Tibet were closed.
Dabu Rugs
Dabu is a hand block printing process, using a clay that dries on each rug. Once the clay is dry, the rug is dipped into a natural indigo vat. I found a jolly indigo vat wallah, Ram, and his sister Gyarsi, who print these rugs.
