The area around the square is a popular hangout and it is improving. New initiatives are taken to preserve the heritage and restore its glamour. The Jakarta Heritage Academy starts in August and will invite heritage specialists, government officials, researchers and entrepreneurs to revitalise the buildings and architecture of the many colonial buildings, some dating back to the 17th century.

Museum Fatahillah
The Jakarta History Museum (Indonesian: Museum Sejarah Jakarta), also known as Fatahillah Museum or Batavia Museum, is located in the Old Town (known as Kota Tua) of Jakarta, Indonesia. The building was built in 1710 as the Stadhuis (city hall) of Batavia. Jakarta History Museum opened in 1974 and displays objects from the prehistory period of the city region, the founding of Jayakarta in 1527, and the Dutch colonization period from the 16th century until Indonesia’s Independence in 1945.
The museum is located in south side of Fatahillah Square (former Batavia city square) near Wayang Museum and Fine Art and Ceramic Museum. The building is believed to be modeled after Dam Palace.
Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics
The Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics (Indonesian: Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik) is a museum in Jakarta, Indonesia. The museum is dedicated especially to the display of traditional fine art and ceramics of Indonesia. The museum is located in east side of Fatahillah Square, near Jakarta History Museum and Wayang Museum.
MuseumWayang
The Wayang Museum (Indonesian: Museum Wayang) is a museum dedicated to Javan wayang puppetry. The museum is located in Kota Tua, Jakarta, Indonesia. It is one of several museums and galleries facing the Fatahillah Square, which include Jakarta History Museum, Fine Art and Ceramic Museum, and Kota Post Office art gallery.
The museum building occupies the site of a church which was built in 1640, under the name of the Old Dutch Church (Dutch: De Oude Hollandsche Kerk). In 1732, the church was renovated and the name was changed into the New Dutch Church (Dutch: De Nieuwe Hollandsche Kerk). In 1808, an earthquake destroyed the church. Later in 1912, a building was constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style on the site, which initially functioned as a warehouse belonging to Geo Wehry & Co. In 1938, the building was renovated, following Dutch colonial architecture. The garden of the Wayang Museum, located on the former yard of the Dutch church, was the funeral site of General Governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen.
Later, the building was bought by the Batavia Society of Arts and Sciences (Dutch: Bataviasche Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen), an institution dealing with Indonesian culture and science. The institution then transferred this building to the Old Batavia Foundation (Dutch: Stichting Oud Batavia) and on December 22, 1939, it was made a museum under the name of Old Batavia Museum (Dutch: Oude Bataviasche Museum). In 1957, after the independence of Indonesia, the building was transferred to the Institute of Indonesian Culture (Indonesian: Lembaga Kebudayaan Indonesia) and on September 17, 1962, to the Ministry of Education and Culture. On June 23, 1968, the DKI Jakarta Administration made the building into the Wayang Museum; the inauguration took place on August 13, 1975.

Jakarta History Museum is located in the building which was the former City Hall of Batavia, known in the past as Stadhuis. This building was the administrative headquarters of the Dutch East India Company and later of the Dutch Colonial Government. The current building was constructed in 1707 by the city government, replacing the former city hall built in 1627. Governor General Abraham van Riebeeck inaugurated it in 1710.
This building is located in front of a public square, which in the past was known as Stadhuisplein, the City Hall Square. The square is now known as Fatahillah Square (Indonesian: Taman Fatahillah). Many public executions were held here. In the center of the square is a fountain which was used as a water supply during colonial era. Also located in the square is a Portuguese cannon (known as Si Jagur Cannon) with a hand ornament showing a fico gesture, which is believed by local people to be able to induce fertility on women.

Wonders Of Indonesia 2017 Bulgaria
As the largest archipelago, Indonesia consists of 300 ethnic groups. The interaction between such varied groups results in a diverse set of norms and values, activities as well as arts crafted with local wisdom.
Starting October 6 until November 12, 2017, Indonesian Embassy in Sofia will be exhibiting all the wonders and richness of our cultural heritage.
On the opening, the embassy is privileged to have a special dance performance, Tari Saman Gayo flown in from Aceh, North Sumatra, and aslo will be the official dance at the opening of the Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia, October 10, 2017.
The exhibition “Heritage Textile, Artifacts, and Jewelry Exhibition” is a cultural effort to build communications and interactions by introducing Indonesia’s craft heritage to the people of Bulgaria.
The exhibition features various cloths and textiles from Java, Sumatra, Bali and East Nusa Tenggara. Consisting of 16.056 islands, Indonesia is spreading from Sabang in the West to Merauke in the East and is a treasure trove of textile splendors. Textiles are made in various techniques such as batik, tie-dye and weaving. Motifs are designed with philosophical meanings and colored with brilliant natural dyes.
It is apparent that textile design has always been inevitably followed by jewelry design. This is evident in the jewelry heirloom of Indonesia. To provide a comprehensive picture, the exhibition also features a precious collection of necklaces, rings, bracelets and belts from different islands of Indonesia.
It is interesting to note the similarities of designs and techniques found between Indonesia and Bulgaria in the mid-centuries. During this period, both nations seem to have reached its grandeur. Indonesia itself was at the height of its glory in 14th century the Majapahit Empire.
This exhibition also showcases Indonesia artifacts of sculpture, furniture, art objects and household utensils. The rich ornamental and decorative style of craft is passed on from generation to generation. Today, amidst the globalization movement, Indonesia can claim to have been true to its cultural identity by preserving its local wisdom.
Art plays an important role in building positive communication and interaction between nations. By understanding its arts and culture, one will learn the art of respect and tolerance. This exhibition hopes to introduce Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, and encourages the people of Bulgaria to come and visit Indonesia.

Urban Conservation in Jakarta since 1968
Urban Conservation in Jakarta since 1968
Since our independence in 1945, Jakarta transformed gradually from a colonial into a modern city. New areas and new buildings were developed to fulfill urgent needs in housings, shops, schools and other facilities as population growing rapidly after the war. All was executed without city planning until the Outline Plan of Jakarta was published in 1957. Later on, the Outline Plan was mostly adopted into the Master Plan of 1965-1985. Governor Ali Sadikin (1966-1977), with Master Plan 1965-1985 in his hands, brought new approaches to modernize the capital city. But new developments need strategic spaces, give pressure to old city centre and historic buildings. On the other hand old buildings were unfortunately abandoned, ruined, or even demolished for some reasons. By 1968, Jakarta has been changed dramatically. At the very crucial time, Ali Sadikin realized that something had to be done. There should a creative equilibrium between the old and the new. After some trips to Europe and USA he believed that Jakarta has an obligation to conserve its historical assets in the name of history and civilization. In 1968 he established Jakarta Department of Museum and History. From that moment, Jakarta’s urban conservation program is started.
Bambang Eryudhawan is chairperson of the Heritage Review Board of Jakarta and the co-founder of Pysat Dokumentasi Arsitektur. He has held appointments in other organisations such as the National Cultural Heritage Team and Indonesian Institute of Architects, and previously taught in Universitas Bina Nusantara, Universitas Mercu Buana and Universitas Trisakti. His recent works include the drafting of Conservation Plans for Oei Tiong Ham’s House in Semarang and Four Historic Houses in Banda Neira.
