In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate visited the small town of De Smet, home to the famous author, Laura Ingalls Wilder. De Smet, South Dakota, is a fun, family-oriented town that gives visitors the opportunity to step back in time, as the town still looks how it did a generation ago, when Laura Ingalls Wilder and her family lived in The Little Town on the Prairie, on On the Shores of Silver Lake, and during, The Long Winter. Fans of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books will enjoy a tour of the town that includes the DeSmet School, the Surveyor's House, the house the Pa built for the Ingalls family, and the cemetery where most of the Ingalls are buried. A must-see in De Smet is the Ingalls Homestead, where guests can walk through a replica sod house and shanty, a barn, a schoolhouse, and can participate in time-period activities like pumping water, washing clothes, making ropes and corn dolls, and playing button buzzers, the string game that Laura and her friends played. After a ride in a horse drawn wagon, visitors attend a Pageant with local actors depicting Laura's time in De Smet. Cheap Family Travel had a great visit in De Smet. If you are a fan of Laura's books or the TV series, De Smet is the place for you.

20 RARE PHOTOS THAT SHOW WHAT THE PEOPLE FROM ‘LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE’ REALLY LOOKED LIKE
The Real Ma and Pa: 20 Rare and Amazing Vintage Photographs That Show What The People From ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Really Looked Like:
The Little House on the Prairie books series is a children’s literature classic that’s not only entertaining, but provides a unique snapshot of life in the Midwestern United States at a time when that area was rapidly changing.
Little House on the Prairie has a special place in the hearts of Americans and many others around the world. Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories, based on her real-life experience of growing up amid the hardships of the Midwest during the late 19th century, have struck a chord with generations of readers and viewers.
Though the book series and the popular TV show based on it are fictional, they draw heavily on author Laura Ingalls Wilder’s real life and family. Take a look at these rare photos of the people behind the timeless stories...
1. 1860: The Real Ma and Pa
Charles and Caroline Ingalls, the original Ma and Pa from Little House on the Prairie, on their wedding day on February 1, 1860.
Charles was born in 1836 and spent the majority of his youth in the tallgrass prairie of Campton Township, just west of Elgin, Illinois. He met and quickly married a 21-year old Caroline Lake Quiner, who was working as a schoolteacher at the time, and they made a home in Pepin County, Wisconsin. They had their first daughter, Mary Amelia, in January, 1865, followed by the birth of Laura in February, 1867. Despite being a high-spirited, outgoing man, Charles wasn't much for people, and he had an insatiable wanderlust. In 1869, before Laura was two years old, he packed up the family and moved to Missouri, then to a town near what is now Independence, Kansas, where their third daughter, Carrie, would be born in 1870.
2. Carrie, Mary, and Laura Ingalls, ca. 1882
From left to right: Carrie, Mary, and Laura Ingalls around 1882. Mary had lost her sight three years earlier.
The young family would soon realize that the Kansas land wasn't open to settlers, so over the next few years, they spent time in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. Grace Pearl was born in May, 1877, and the family was struggling to make ends meet. In 1879, Charles accepted a job as a clerk and bookkeeper with the railroad in Dakota Territory, which sparked the move to the town of De Smet in 1880. The following winter's terrible storms and conditions would be the basis for the novel, The Long Winter.
3. Laura in De Smet, 1884
Laura in 1884 at age 17
Laura quickly got involved with life in the newly-formed (and growing) town of De Smet. She attended school, made friends, and obtained her teaching certificate, which enabled her to begin teaching in 1882, a full two months before her 16th birthday!
At the same time, she began courting Almanzo Wilder, a young homesteader whom she called Manly. Though 10 years her senior, Almanzo fell deeply in love with Laura and would drive her back and forth between De Smet and the town where se was teaching 12 miles away. They married in 1885 and settled on the Wilder's claim and began their life as farmers.
4. Laura and Almanzo, ca. 1885-86

5. The Ingalls Family in 1891
From left to right: Caroline (Ma), Carrie, Laura, Charles (Pa), Grace, and Mary.
The family took 1890 and 1891 to rest and recover, and the photos from a studio session in 1891 shows that Laura was of good health and vitality at the end of her rest.
6. Laura in 1891
This early 1891 portrait of Laura captures that she had returned to good health. Almanzo still was struggling, but Laura helped them continue work, and they kept their ears to the ground for new opportunities.
7. Portrait of Laura and Almanzo, 1891
In October, 1891, Laura, Almanzo, and a young Rose traveled to Florida in hopes that the warm weather would be better for Almanzo's health and farming. You can tell from the photo above that Laura certainly didn't love it; indeed, she could barely tolerate the humidity and weather, and the family moved back to De Smet, South Dakota in August 1892.
8. Laura, ca. 1898
A young Laura Ingalls Wilder on the porch of her rented home in Mansfield, Missouri around 1898.
After a short time back in De Smet after the disastrous trip to Florida, the family quickly made way to Mansfield, Missouri by covered wagon. Almanzo put a $100 down payment to buy 40 acres of hilly, rocky land that Laura would name Rocky Ridge Farm. This farm would eventually be expanded and serve as the couple's home for the rest of their lives.

When planning our fulltime families caravan west from the Canadian Rally, our route planner Marti said we would go to Kansas City via South Dakota, we thought she was a little off the mark. But really she couldnt have been more on it! We went to the site of one of the original Laura Ingalls Wilder homesteads. We had a great time, the kids were busy running around the prairie, learning about the early settlers, and Laura Ingall's family. We learned about, and tasted what they ate, and overall had a great visit in this small part of the country.

Following the Trail of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little Houses
On the 2nd weekend of July 2013, we followed the trail of Laura Ingalls, by visiting her birth place, The Little House in the Big Woods, at Pepin WI. Then we headed west to Walnut Grove MN, and the Dugout House on Plum Creek. Finally on to De Smet SD to the Little House on the Prairie, and the 160 acre homestead. We saw some American History, and had a nice camping experience.
This video is a very short, compared to the weekend, summary of where we went and what we saw.
In March of 2014 we visited Mansfield MO to see Rocky Ridge Farm, that video may be viewed at:

Laura Ingalls Wilder Biography
Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in Wisconsin in 1867. During her long life, she lived in Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, Florida, and Missouri. In her 60s, Laura began to entertain and educate millions of readers through her Little House series of books.
The Real Laura Ingalls of Little House on the Prairie
My Girl Hero Laura Ingalls Wilder is one of my favorite writers, not just because her stories are so interesting to read but because many of the events she describes really happened to her.
Laura Ingalls was born on February 7, 1867 just outside of the little village of Pepin, Wisconsin. She was the second oldest of her parent's four surviving children, all of which were girls.
Laura's parents were pioneers heading west, just one of thousands of families encouraged by the US government to set up homesteads on lands that had belonged to Native American tribes.
So, through most of her childhood, her family moved A LOT.
Beginning in Wisconsin,
they moved to Missouri,
then Kansas,
then back to Wisconsin,
then Minnesota,
then Iowa,
then back to Minnesota,
then to the Dakota Territories
Then they finally settled down in South Dakota. (show lines on map on iphone?)
Phew!
You practically need an app to keep up.
When she was 18, Laura Ingalls married Almanzo Wilder. When they first settled down, the future looked promising but her life grew hard. Almanzo became ill, family deaths and terrible fires took their toll and the young family's finances began to fail.
So once again in Laura's life, she went on the move. Laura, Almanzo and their daughter, Rose, finally settled in Mansfield, Missouri and this is where her writing career began.
Laura worked as a writer and editor for a local newspaper and developed a loyal readership who enjoyed her stories of home and family life, travel adventures and the expanding options for women of the times. At the same time, Rose, now grown-up and travelling the world had become a well known writer on her own.
Rose encouraged her mother to expand on the stories she had already begun work on based on her pioneer childhood but it wasn't until the legendary stock market crash in 1929 that publishing the stories became urgent.
You see, Laura and her husband lost most of their money at the beginning of the Great Depression. Millions of people were out of work, farms were drying up and times were bad for everyone. With Rose's experience in publishing, Laura was able to quickly improve her stories and find a publisher.
And I am am so glad she did. I love the Little House books and so do millions of others around the world.
Ever since the her first book, Little House in the Big Woods, was published in 1932, Laura's books have never stopped being printed and have been translated into 40 languages.
Laura Ingalls Wilder lived to the grand old age of 90 but she will forever live on in my imagination as little Laura Ingalls.
Thank you, Laura!

Laura Ingalls Wilder Homestead and Corner Gas || THEMOMOF6BOYS
Laura Ingalls Wilder was the author of the Little House on the Prairie books of which the TV series was based. The homestead in Sorth Dakota was located in an area we'd pass through on our way home. Our boys have been watching series and have read some of the books, so visiting the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead was exciting for them. Also on the drive home was our last stop in our travels - the set of Corner Gas, which was a Canadian TV program. The boys have seen us watch the show so they were familiar with it but it was the chill cheese dogs they could buy there that was the real highlight for them.
We capture our funny family moments and put them online for you to enjoy!
