Skagway to White pass Summit train in time-lapse
Time-lapse of the Skagway to White Pass Summit train ride. This is a shore excursion for passengers on cruise ships visiting Skagway, Alaska. A fantastic choice for a shore excursion if you want to distance yourself from 10,000 other cruise ship passengers.
The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway is “The Scenic Railway of the World”. Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.

Skagway,Alaska -Jewell Gardens
Jewell Gardens, home of Alaska's only Community Supported Agriculture program and the first Certified Organic show garden in the United States.
Giant vegetables and flowers taller than you will delight and inspire your own green thumb endeavors. The garden dazzles with hundreds of tulips and lilacs during the early season, with giant delphiniums in midsummer and an abundance of flowers and enormous produce during the fall harvest. Railroad buffs, both young and old, will love the garden railway, a G-Scale model of the White Pass & Yukon Route that winds its way through Skagwee and through miniature mountains, forests, tunnels, a waterfall and even a gold mine. The model town looks a lot like Skagway did 100 years ago and the train chugs by a tent city too! Through tunnels and over wooden trestles, this tiny railway is sure to bring a smile to your face!
Skagway, Alaska Cruise Port Guide: White Pass & Yukon Route Railway
The White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is a popular attraction for cruise guests visiting Skagway, Alaska. Completed in 1900, the railroad was the primary means of transportation for prospectors travelling over the White Pass to the goldfields in the Yukon.
The “White Pass Summit Excursion” allows guests to ride in vintage-style passenger cars along the same route as gold prospectors of the past while seeing spectacular views, gold rush points of interest, and more. The narrated tour takes about two-and-a-half hours as the train travels forty miles round-trip to the White Pass summit at 2,888 feet in elevation.

???? Hop on the KYD email list and get a weekly email with even more inspiration
About Episode 123: Waking up at the border was as awkward as you might think, but that is one of the best things about RVing! Need to sleep? Pullover. We visited Haines for two reasons. We heard the bears and eagles were abundant, even more than most of Alaska and it gave us an opportunity to take the Marine Highway and ferry to Skagway Alaska. Considering all the miles we drove, we knew we were not up for an “out and back” and the ferry makes Tok to Haines to Skagway a more direct shot to the Cassiar Highway. Here’s a quick tip on the Marine Highway. Anything over 30’ you need to call. So don’t even waste your time trying to figure out their unacquainted website. All the staff from the phones to the crew are very helpful and polite.

The Ends of the Earth - Alaska's Wild Peninsula
The Alaska Peninsula is a cloud-cloaked land of active volcanoes, rolling tundra and the greatest concentration of the largest bears on earth. The writings of naturalist Loren Eiseley inspire this filmic essay on a landscape where bears outnumber people and the sockeye salmon run is the most prolific in the world. At the base of the peninsula lies Katmai National Park, a wilderness larger Yellowstone and Yosemite -- combined. Farther down the peninsula a giant volcanic caldera emerges on the horizon, so remote that more people climb Everest than visit Aniakchak. But Alaska is warming at more than twice the rate of the rest of the planet; The Ends of the Earth, John Grabowska's lyrical film on the Alaska Peninsula, asks how climate change effects will impact this magnificent land of wilderness and wildlife.

Cruising Alaska Juneau
Hey Cruisers, Welcome to Juneau, Alaska’s capital. There are no roads in or out of Juneau, but there are plenty of shops and fun right off the dock. In fact, there is plenty to explore on foot.
Juneau has a rich gold rush history, and the Red Dog Saloon seems to harken back to those times…with swinging doors, sawdust floors, lively music, and crazy décor. It’s kind of a must stop in Juneau.
If you want to get a little further away, hop on the Mt. Roberts tramway. The tram rises 1,800 feet from the cruise ship dock downtown, through the rain forest to the Mountain House. There’s a nature center, hiking trails, shopping and even food at the Timberline bar at the top.
If you love hiking, glaciers and waterfalls, jump one of the many convenient bus tours to Mendenhall Glacier. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the view of Mendenhall glacier from the visitors center or venture out on foot, to get a closer look. But be sure to leave your snacks on the cruise ship- to keep curious bears at bay, the park doesn’t allow food of any kind.
The scenic hike to spectacular Nugget falls starts at the visitors center, and ends at this breathtaking waterfall, with Mendenhall glacier in the background. We’re going to turn off the music and give you a little idea of what it sounds like to be at Nugget Falls.
