CONGO: KINSHASA: ARMED SOLDIERS BREAK UP POLITICAL DEMONSTRATION
Eng/French/Nat
Armed soldiers broke up a peaceful march through Kinshasa Wednesday, firing into the
air and chasing protesters who defied a government ban on political demonstrations.
The protestors called for the resignation of Laurent Kabila, the new president of the Democratic Republic of Congo - formerly Zaire.
About 50 demonstrators who had chanted Kabila, assassin of Congo! were detained.
The military of the Democratic Republic of Congo - formerly Zaire - turned out in force early Wednesday to try and discourage opposition protesters from gathering for a march.
Soldiers were posted around the protest's starting point at the main railway station in Kinshasa.
But the demonstrators marched anyway - in defiance of President Laurent Kabila's ban on demonstrations.
Kabila issued the directive on Monday, warning that violators would be arrested.
Soldiers at first stood by without intervening, but suddenly two truckloads drove into the march, scattering about one thousand men, women and children.
About 100 opposition activists faced a lone soldier wielding a machine gun - many kneeling before him.
The demonstrators then pushed past him and began moving toward downtown Kinshasa past scores of other soldiers lining the boulevard.
The peaceful demonstration was called by the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDSP).
Their numbers swelled to about 350 as they moved through town toward the house of Etienne Tshisekedi, leader of the U-D-S-P.
Tshisekedi was passed over by Kabila when the president formed his new government last week.
Organisers of the march said Kabila and his ruling Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo (ADFL) are no better than the Mobutu regime they replaced.
SUPER CAPTION (French)
The ADFL of Kabila is a party-state exactly like the MPR of Mr. Mobutu.
SUPER CAPTION: Raymond Kahungu Mbemba, UDSP member
Kabila's ban was the latest restrictive policy issued since rebel fighters seized Kinshasa, ending dictator Mobutu Sese Seko's rule.
Two visiting American congressmen said they agreed with Kabila's move.
SOUNDBITE (English):
I don't think it's unreasonable for the government to say at the present time we should have a suspension temporarily on demonstration. First of all, (it's) a city of five, six (m) million people with perhaps no police force with a group of soldiers who are not even necessarily trained or rank. I think that perhaps it's actually in good judgement.
SUPER CAPTION: Donald Payne, U-S Democratic Party Congressman
One of the congressmen said it would take time before one could properly assess Kabila's rule.
SOUNDBITE (English):
When hungry people are fed, when children are inoculated, and when water is clean, then we know the government is doing the right thing.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Campbell, U-S Republican Party Congressman
D-R Congo's Foreign Minister Bizima Karaha also defended the ban, saying the country would not secure basic goods - such as food, medicine and education - by creating chaos.
SOUNDBITE (English):
We cannot have democracy if there is no peace. We cannot have development if there is no peace. So anybody who wants to create instability is an enemy of democracy.
SUPER CAPTION: Bizima Karaha, Foreign Minister of Democratic Republic of Congo
Kabila is to be sworn into office Thursday at the People's Palace, where Parliament meets.
The Alliance said it would begin on Wednesday to organise mayoral elections in Kinshasa.

Let me be me. | Sifa Muderhwa | TEDxBoulevardTriomphal
Race, being 'too' dark or having fair skin and how both tones are treated and viewed in society, are issues that are still very present all over the world and also in today’s Congolese society. Regardless of this, Sifa has taught herself to take pride in her beauty and who that makes her.
Sifa discusses race in a global context and in local context in her home city Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo). She deconstructs Congolese stereotypes and discuses her experience growing up black in an international school in Kinshasa where she is often viewed as being the inferior race. Sifa Muderhwa is a 16 years old student at the international school, Institut Aurora, Kinshasa DR.C. Sifa is passionate about art & music and her life goal is to contribute to her country's development and promote ‘African-ness’ & self-awareness through painting, music and cinema.
Sifa is a bright and courageous student. She anticipates the impact her speech will have on the global platform and hopes to transform at least one person's way of thinking for the better. Signing of DRC peace deal pushed further
The Democratic Republic of Congo might have to wait a little longer, for the signing of a peace deal between government and opposition, an agreement that is intended to put an end to the political crisis in the country.
Signing for the deal which is being sponsored by the country's Catholic Church failed to materilaise on Friday as planned. The signature should only take place after Christmas according to the mediation.

Zaire - Rebels reach Kinshasa
T/I: 10:39:14
Ugly scenes were seen on the streets of Kinshasa on Monday 19/5) as residents saught revenge on those suspected of having being collaborators with the regime of ousted President Mobutu.
A large group also gathered outside the French embassy in Kinshasa demanding that the French government refuse sanctuary to Mobutu, who has stolen billions of dollars from the country's coffers.
Meanwhile, Red Cross officials said they had recovered at least 200 bodies of people killed over the weekend, mostly soldiers.
Residents tore down posters of the exiled dictator, affixing his portrait with hateful slogans. Anything, even bank notes, bearing Mobutu's image are being torn down, burnt or ripped up. And it's not just images being swept away. Local radio announced that self-proclaimed president Laurent Kabila has decided to rename Zaire as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
