The Institute of Russian Realist Art, Sotheby's and Promsvyazbank present the exhibition Soviet Art. Soviet Sport featuring over 60 works from the collection of the Institute of Russian Realist Art, the ROSIZO state museum and exhibition center, the Russian Museum, regional state museums and private collections in Russia. The exhibition will be formally unveiled on December 18 in the halls of Sotheby's auction house in London, and will be on show to the general public from December 19, 2013 till January 14, 2014 (free admission). About 40 Soviet paintings, drawings and sculptures will be exhibited in the UK. The London opening of Soviet Art. In Moscow the full exhibition will be presented at the Institute of Russian Realist Art on February 5 and will remain open to the public until May 2014. The works on display at this exhibition of the Institute of Russian Realist Art are characteristic examples of the diverse artistic heritage of the USSR. The exhibition and catalogue demonstrate, with real-world examples, the development of one of the key themes of socialist realist art. Sport was among the most important brands of the Soviet era. Along with other symbols such as industrialization, space and ballet it was often heavily influenced by Soviet ideology.
That ideological pressure found its expression in the evolution of an incredibly strong aesthetic canon. Soviet sport in art is an example of an almost violent juxtaposition of form and concept. However, sporting themes enable artists to explore a wide range of means of self-expression, ranging from heartfelt applications of the only true art to attempts to oppose the grand style. Alexander Deyneka, one of the leading artists of the era, offered the clearest explanation of sport's allure for artists: Sport has one wonderful feature: it can safely fit into a very wide variety of artistic frameworks. This subject is inexhaustible because it is democratic and popular. Sport accommodates within itself shades of feeling - it is lyrical, it is positive and full of optimism. It draws on heroic origins.
OJSC Promsvyazbank and the Institute of Russian Realist Art have a long history of partnership, and the Soviet Art. Soviet Sport exhibition continues the bank's intention to contribute to the development of Russian artistic, cultural, and sport life. Support for Russian realist art influencing social life in Russia is an important part of the image of PSB, a bank with long history and outstanding reputation. Through its engagement in art projects, PSB contributes to the overall cultural development of society in Russia and abroad.

Paintings of Hyperborean Russia by Alexander Uglanov
In modern Russia, and throughout the Slavic world, only a few artists have dedicated themselves to understanding and recreating the image of our ancient Rus Hyperborean. Among them, Alexander Uglanov, already a master of easel painting. His fabulous paintings can be seen in the original on the best collective exhibitions on Slavic subjects, organized by Yuri Mikhailovich Medvedev at the Museum of Moscow (2009) and the School of Arts. Balakirev (2010). And now it's time to reflect on creativity Uglanova as an individual, original and unique world.
Alexander Uglanov (Александр Угланов) was born in 1960 in Tver. He studied at the Art College of Venetsianov under Vladimir Ivanovich Burov, an experienced master who taught the importance of strict academic art, which involves the careful study of nature and a focus on the overall quality of a picture, while also allowing for a student to develop his own style based on his talents. In Alexander’s case, he chose to use his skills to represent his visions of ancient Russia – a world of magic, beauty, and strength.
These epic landscapes and legendary figures leave me feeling that even if some elements of this awesome past have no basis in reality, these paintings can offer inspiration for a future world we can build.

A window to Russia masterpieces without borders
The representation of classical painting in a new light is a delicate and interesting affair for curators, directors and museum specialists. Having access to works from the collection of the Institute of Russian Realist Art and the State Tretyakov Gallery, Radugadesign decided to combine them harmoniously with generative art, without changing the masterpieces, but maintaining graphics and dynamics. Thus, Radugadesign combined the past and present in one whole piece of art. In this project, the studio, professional directors, music producers and a whole orchestra created a video fantasy for guests of the gala evening dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Ingosstrakh. With a difference in the day, the show took place at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and St. Petersburg Mikhailovsky Theater, bringing together painting, classical music, modern technologies and design, thus opening a new facet of static classical masterpieces. Special thanks go to the V confession agency.

Soviet Ballet
In this talk to the Stalin Society, Dr Christina Kostoula - dance educator and historian of class struggle - discusses examples of socialist-realist ballets like The Red Poppy and The Flames of Paris and presents people’s artists like Olga Lepeshinskaya.
She demonstrates that Soviet ballet was synonymous with creative depth and accountability towards the society it served.
Ballet, art and all forms of culture were truly meaningful to the Soviet people; the theatre was a place where the aspirations of workers could find their fullest expression in a way that can never happen under capitalism.
For the Soviet people, who endured hell during the Second World War, theatres were not mere places of amusement – they represented the vibrant popular culture and humanism they were fighting for and defending against fascism.
They were for poetry, for beauty and for the glory of living; for the greater understanding of human history and society; of what it truly means to be human.
Ballet was part of this culture – a serious humanistic art with a rich legacy that today’s communists need to reclaim. Its poetry of movement still has the ability to illuminate new realms for the masses and enrich their imaginations.
Socialist realism showed the masses that art was not an abstract thing-for-its-own-sake, unknowable and remote. No. Art was for the people; art is ours, for the workers, to inspire and uplift our struggle to build a better, more decent and meaningful life for all humanity, without exploitation of man by man, and nation by nation, and without the degrading influences of rapacious, exploitative, individualistic and selfish capitalist culture.

Russian Artist Vladimir Volegov
A selection of artworks bu Russian Artist Vladimir Volegov.
Vladimir was born in the city of Khabarovsk, on December 19, 1957. When he was two years old, his mother abandoned his father, took her son and moved to Sverdlovsk (formerly, Yekaterinburg). From then on, the family had often relocated from one place to another. The mother wanted Vladimir to become a doctor, but he had a strongly pronounced desire to paint. He was remarkably diligent and observant. While at school, his teachers often asked him to help create visual aids, and he earned his first money for drawing the slogan Long Live the First of May! when he was 13.
At the age of 14, he started to paint 3 m cinema posters, which later often added something special to the youth parties. In the city of Krivoi Rog, Vladimir entered an arts school, and during his time there, he discovered the art of many classical painters. The works by Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov had a particular effect on him.
In 1980, he entered the School of Graphics at Lvov Institute of Printing Art. At the entrance exam, he painted an illustration to the novel The Young Guard. The Admission Committee, having seen Vladimir’s work, unanimously made a decision about his admission, even though his Literature and the History of CPSU exam results were far from brilliant.
In 1982, in Krivoi Rog, Vladimir became the head of SPLAV artistic association. In 1986, he often visited Moscow, participated in international poster exhibitions, and in one of such contests, he won the first prize. In those very days, he visited the exhibition of Andreas Zorn’s works, which had a significant influence on him.
In 1988, he moved to Moscow in order to achieve his artistic potential. He started with painting portraits in Arbat, while at the same time he was looking for work. That was when his first contacts with publishing houses, advertising and record companies were established. They willingly employed him. With the emergence and development of digital technologies, Vladimir learned computer painting. He painted posters, covers for vinyl and CD albums, worked with advertising agencies for periodicals and street posters advertising. Throughout all that time, he never ceased to paint. The confused and hectic years of 1990 – 2000 were full of commercial orders, comic books, making sketches for promotional items. In order to survive, Vladimir accepted all the offers that came along.
In 1990, Vladimir started travelling to Europe, earning his living by painting portraits in the streets of Barcelona, Berlin, Vienna and other European cities. For 10 years, he participated in the Summer Portrait project in the Austrian town of Wels. Having seen his works on the vinyl and CD album covers he made for show business projects, Russian show business celebrities started making orders for painted portraits.
In 1992, during his summer work as a contracted painter in the park of Gardaland (Italy), in one of the local markets, he purchased a book with Giovanni Boldini’s pictorial reproductions, which impressed, amazed and inspired Vladimir.
When he saw the impressionists’ originals in the Musée d'Orsay, he started to spend more time on painting and never stopped working. At the beginning of 2000, Vladimir created a web page with his commercial and artistic works. It was through that page, that his art manager found him, and in 2004, Vladimir signed a long-term contract with Soho Editions, NY, USA. Vladimir discovered the names of John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, adopted the style of romantic realism and started to paint in that manner.
After seven years of marriage, in 2006, Vladimir and his wife, Ekaterina, moved to Spain. And in that same year, their son Anton was born. In 2007, he started his successful cooperation with Galeries Bartoux in France as well as with art galleries in the USA, Italy and Sweden.
In 2011, while Vladimir was working on a 3D project, an idea of creating 3D dolls dawned on him. He set up the volegovdolls.com web page and took part in the exhibitions in Paris (Doll Expo 2012), in Barcelona (Doll Show 2012), in New York (Art Expo New York 2012), in which both his paintings and dolls were a tremendous success. Vladimir worked on the inflow of private orders for portraits while simultaneously pursuing his artistic endeavours, the main theme of which was depicting women and children. Besides, Vladimir created videos dedicated to the process of painting creation, and has composed music to them.
Since 2015, Vladimir has started to conduct video tutorials in figurative oil painting and, after his followers’ persistent requests, he has created a tutorial DVD.

Great Russian Masters
The Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, informally known as the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts, was founded in 1757 by Ivan Shuvalov under the name Academy of the Three Noblest Arts. Catherine the Great renamed it the Imperial Academy of Arts and commissioned a new building, completed 25 years later in 1789 by the Neva River. The academy promoted the neoclassical style and technique, and sent its promising students to European capitals for further study. Training at the academy was virtually required for artists to make successful careers.
Formally abolished in 1918 after the Russian Revolution, the academy was renamed several times. It established free tuition; students from across the country competed fiercely for its few places annually. In 1947 the national institution was moved to Moscow, and much of its art collection was moved to the Hermitage. The building in Leningrad was devoted to the Ilya Repin Leningrad Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, named in honor of one of Russia's foremost realist artists. Since 1991 it has been called the St. Petersburg Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
