History of Mexico DVD | San Miguel de Allende
This is the introduction to a live showing of the popular audio-visual presentation, The History of Mexico, Here is the story of how it all began.
When Bob Sommerlot was the Director of Academic Affairs at The Instituto Allende, San Miguel de Allende, he wanted to replace a somewhat academic lecture on the history of Mexico with a more dramatized treatment.
This was the seed of Actors Lab's creation and production of The History of Mexico.
Two years were spent researching, writing, rewriting and combing through hundreds of books for visuals to make into slides. The end result was a one hour dramatized presentation of the history of this amazing country.
It combined the voices of four actors and 334 slides to bring to life the personalities, artists and events from the time of the Olmecs to our present era!
For the next eleven years The History of Mexico was presented year round to residents and tourists at Teatro Santa Ana, Biblioteca Publica, San Miguel de Allende.
A reporter for The New York Times said of our production, This should be required viewing by all who come to Mexico.
The Art Director of the Biblioteca, Jose Luis Mendoza said, You will find in this poetical and accurate documentary a beautiful and deep overview of Mexico's history.
After attending one performance some visiting teachers expressed the wish that this program could be seen by high school, and college students as well.
That wish was the inspiration for putting our production of The History of Mexico onto DVD and you can now purchase it at The Tienda de Biblioteca (Gift shop of the Biblioteca) in San Miguel de Allende.

Getting Married in San Miguel De Allende - Nick & Bah Wedding
Nick & Bahar's Wedding Video
- For information on wedding and other prices please visit
Shot over the course of 3 days in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico
Including Parade, Pool Party, Welcome party, Wedding day, and casual walking shots around San Miguel
Here is the story of Nick and Bahar copied directly from their website which can be found here:
THE BEGINNING - BY HER
Nick and I both worked at the coffee house on campus and we both had physics class after the afternoon shift at work. He would always long board past me to class as I walked (I gave up biking to class due the high likely hood of crashing.) Nick eventually started walking with me to class, and I started requesting trash duty at the coffee house so I would have a greater chance of running into him in the kitchen.
Nick was the guy that didn't need to come to class. There were times when we would have a pop quiz and I would have to take two copies of it and turn one in under his name since he had decided to ditch that day. I would help him with the homework, and not going to lie I really thought I was carrying him through that class. Turns out he is lightyears smarter than I thought at the time, and he really didn't need my help at all.
We became great friends through the spring quarter and when it came time for his fraternity formal, he said to me: the girl that I like isn't able to come to formal with me, will you be my date instead? and I was like.... sure thing, at least I was the second choice right?! The day before formal Nick tells me the girl he likes is actually able to attend, so he didn't need me to go with any more. No worries, I ended up going to another fraternity formal with another dude instead. Long story short, his date took allergy medicine, fell asleep before formal and never showed up. Meanwhile, my date got arrested for fighting a bouncer at a bar. And Nick and I ended up on the phone that night realizing how things were supposed to happen. Fast forward 7 years and here we are!
THE PROPOSAL - BY HIM
I had given much thought over the past years on how I would propose to Bahar, I knew I wanted it to catch her off gaurd. But alas the problem- how to deceive the love of your life when she's so much more intelligent than you?
I decided to orchestrate the perfect day at home, surprised by her family and friends. So the stage was set by inviting her to a dinner for a new company I had just started working for, on April 1st 2017 (A LIE). But of course, the morning of April Fool's Day tragedy struck...
While getting ready for a fancy day out, Bah and Miko engaged in a direct hit, head-0n collision to the dome. She immediately developed a blue welt the size of a small grapefruit on her forehead and started crying. Which doesn't exactly equate to great pictures. Was I freaking out? Yes. Was she freaking out? Again, Yes. So we strapped some ice to her head, threw her in the car and drove off for some mimosas in Lafayette. By the time we finished our first glass, she had healed a 10,000% and I was staring into the eyes of the most beautiful woman in the world, on arguably the most important day of my life so far.
I took her to the top of Tilden Park in Berkeley, where a picnic lay in a little patch of grass off the beaten path with panoramic views of the bay area in the background. When we arrived, the Maid of Honor was still arranging the scene! Her dog Chico wouldn't leave us, which only made the memory sweeter. We sat down and I asked her to marry me, she said yes with a face full of tears (lots of crying happened on this day) and told me her ring reminded her of Disneyland. After we enjoyed the moment together, we went to a romanic lunch at Chez Panisse. Just when the day was coming to a close, we had a surprise party planned back at home in Alamo with our family and closest friends.

San Miguel de Allende Travel Guide - Exploring Unique Mexico
San Miguel de Allende Travel Guide - Exploring Unique Mexico
San Miguel de Allende is a small colonial town in the Bajio mountains of central Mexico, about 170 miles northwest of Mexico City. Founded as San Miguel in 1542 by a San Franciscan Monk named San Miguel El Grande, it became a centerpiece in the war for Mexican independence from Spain; it was renamed San Miguel de Allende after Ignacio Allende, a hero of the independence movement. In danger of becoming a ghost town in the early 20th century, the town was declared a national monument in 1926 and building became heavily restricted in the town's historic centro district, allowing the city to keep the colorful native facades that have become the backdrop of many famous works of art and even modern motion pictures.
A series of artist colonies were founded in San Miguel in the 1950s, including the famous Instituto Allende, and many G.I.s moved their families here following World War II either to attend one of these colonies or to escape the Polio scares raging through many U.S. cities. The result was a healthy American expatriate population that exists today mostly as elderly retirees and second-generation business owners. This population, combined with the Mexican wealthy (especially actors and politicians) that have rediscovered San Miguel as a Malibu-like retreat from Mexico City, has created an eclectic mix of Old World Mexican charm, American hospitality, and a party atmosphere that makes San Miguel a world-class destination for adventurous travelers.
San Miguel is, first and foremost, a city built for relaxing. It is a Spanish colonial town of perhaps 140,000 people; a heritage site protected by the Mexican government in order to maintain its character. In July of 2008 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a tourist destination, an art colony, and a retirement community for a few thousand foreigners, mostly Americans, Canadians, and Europeans. In spite of the increased number of foreigners over the past perhaps 20 years, it still is charming enough that many Mexicans visit for special holidays, and there are more than a few visitors who buy a house within a few days of their first arrival.
Maybe 90% of San Miguel's attractions are within walking distance. Just keep in mind that because San Miguel was built into the side of a mountain, it can turn out to be difficult to traverse, some inclines are 15 or 20 degrees. Furthermore, the streets are cobbled and narrow - some were nothing but goat tracks before they were paved - and many have fallen into disrepair. Curbs are often a high step away from the road. All in all, the town can be unforgiving to an inexperienced walker. For this reason, it is advisable to bring comfortable shoes.
One of the sites that you must see is the San Miguel Arcangel Parish. It has become the hallmark of the city. It is a beautiful temple of the end of the century. Other must places in San Miguel de Allende are the handicraft market of the city or the archeological zone of Cañada la Virgen.
In the market there is a sample of the local craftsmanship made of metals, papier mache, blown glass and more. Its cobbled streets, wooded courtyards, fine architectural details and sumptuous interiors will enchant you; perhaps that is the reason why CN Travel declared it one of the twenty-five best cities chosen by the travelers.

San Miguel de Allende, Mexican Colonial Property for Lease
Located in a gated enclave of ten luxury homes, Casa Grande’s private residence is an exquisite 3 bedroom, 3-1/2 bath secure retreat, just minutes from the activity of downtown San Miguel. The main house covers over 4,000 square feet of livable space including stone work, boveda ceilings, outdoor fountains, cupulas, Sautillo tile, outdoor gardens and terraces that make this designer home gorgeous. All our beds are super comfy with luxurious linens and plush bathroom towels.
The spectacular rooftop garden is over 3,000 square feet of uninterrupted views in all directions. It includes (all under cover) a full gourmet kitchen complete with GE Profile appliances (refrigerator, gas fired stove top, oven, dishwasher, microwave and two sinks both with garbage disposals), a professionally-designed gas-fired wood burning pizza oven, a circular bar with 10 custom made leather-padded bar chairs, a hot tub for eight people, and a full bathroom complete with glass topped shower. All counter tops are granite, cabinetry is mesquite wood curved to match the curved granite bar and the entire roof has slate tile flooring.
The balance of the roof is open air with custom made cushioned loungers, tables and chairs, gas-fire pit, gorgeous planters and potted plants; excellent for dining outside, entertaining a large party…or for a more intimate evening after a day of touring the many places to explore here in San Miguel.
This Mexican Colonial property is located in one of San Miguel's most distinguished, gated communities. Casa Grande is located 0.4 miles from Parque Juarez, 0.5 miles from the world famous Instituto Allende and 0.7 miles from the Parroquia and El Jardin (the town square), both are the center of the city. The walk to these areas are gently downhill (you can walk home or a taxi is $3 USD from anywhere in town). Juarez Park is also only a short walk as are many restaurants, shops, galleries and the famous historic Instituto Allende on Ancha de San Antonio Street.
The designer home is furnished with Mexican folk art, antiques, fine linens and other plush textiles. The home has a large, beautifully appointed living room, sunny dining room for eight with floor to ceiling glass windows and doors opening to an open air atrium complete with water fountain, loungers, table and chairs and the sounds of birds chirping daylong.
The large kitchen features stainless steel GE appliances and a heavy duty Viking industrial gas stove complete with grill and griddle. The kitchen includes wonderful cabinetry and hand-painted Mexican tile with plenty of prep areas and includes a separate maid’s sink, additional prep area and pantry space; truly a gourmets delight!!!
A laundry room with full size washer and dryer is located in the home immediately beyond the maid's kitchen.
The main house can sleep six with a king master suite and two bedrooms with queen beds. An additional inflatable queen size air mattress is available for 2 extra guests if needed. A 4th bedroom and additional casitas are located on the property as described at the bottom of this section.
The home includes four additional items of importance:
•Purified, pressurized water treatment systems so that there are no problems with drinking the water or having adequate water pressure to all users.
•Internet and TV access. Because all homes and hotels in SMA are built with stone and brick walls, such services can be spotty at best. To alleviate such problems, we have installed hard wire to each room and then broadcast Wi-Fi from that point forward in each room. We have three services coming into the property from the cable company divided by five servers in the house so that each user will receive at least 14 mbs on their devices.
•48” Samsung Smart TVs are provided to keep you tuned to your favorite streaming sites be it Netflix, YouTube or other providers.
•A monitored burglar alarm and perimeter security cameras are provided for your peace of mind.
Maid service is included twice per week. Additional service can be provided at additional cost and availability.
All rooms include ceiling fans and gas fire places. A US Vonage phone is available so you can call anywhere in the world free of charge…and your friends and family can reach you, too, free of charge.
As an added benefit, Lawnie & Michelle Sturdevant (the owners) live in a separate house located next door and are available at any time to assist you.
For more information, please email Lawnie or Michelle at sanmiguelproperty@gmail.com or call us at 281-769-1222
San Miguel de Allende
San Miguel de Allende is a city located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico. It's about 170 miles from Mexico City.
Historically, the town is important as being the birthplace of Mexican General Ignacio Allende, whose surname was added to the town’s name in 1826. It was also the first city declared independent of Spanish rule during the Mexican War of Independence. Today, the town is a proclaimed World Heritage Site, attracting thousands of tourists and new residents from abroad every year.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the town was in danger of disappearing, after an influenza pandemic. Gradually, its Baroque/Neoclassical colonial structures were discovered by foreign artists who moved in and began art and cultural institutes such as the Instituto Allende and the Escuela de Bellas Artes.
Since then, the town has attracted a significant number of foreign retirees, artists, writers and tourists, which has shifted the area’s economy from agriculture and industry to commerce catering to outside visitors and residents.
