Im Februar 2014 reisten die beiden Mannheimer Musiker Peter Hinz (percussion) und Steffen Dix (saxophon) gemeinsam nach Indien. In Varanasi, eine der ältesten Städte der Welt und eine der Hauptstädte der Musik Indiens, nahmen sie Unterricht in indisch klassischer Musik am „International Music Center Ashram“. Für Peter Hinz war es bereits der 4. Aufenthalt dort. Ihn verbindet eine langjährige Freundschaft mit Keshava Rao Nayak – dem Tabla Meister des Ashram. Mit dessen Sohn Sandip Rao Kewale (tabla) und dem jungen
Sitar Meister Shyam Rastogi gründeten sie in der Stadt am Ganges das Projekt: „NeckarGanga“. Hier vereinen sich die sehr unterschiedlichen Einflüsse der einzelnen Musiker zu einem Klang, der sich spielerisch über alle Unterschiede und Grenzen hinwegsetzt.

This video is from my recent visit to Varanasi, India, the oldest and probably most mystified city in the world. Whenever I hear Indian classical music, Tabla and Sitar, I am instantly transported to another world.
I am endlessly grateful for the opportunity to play music with Sandip Rao Kewale (Tabla) and Shyam Rastogi (Sitar)! Both are incredibly masterful musicians and play Classical music as well as World Jazz in their band Neckarganga.
I’m so excited to share these clips from our jam at the International Music Centre (Ashram)! We played music from each others cultures mixing Western and Eastern styles including India Ragas, Blues, and our original songs.

Pandit Shivaji Rao Kevaley, renowned santoor player of Varanasi. He learned his first lesson of music from father Pandit Gangadhar Rao Nayak Kevaley and received training from Dr. Rajeshwar Acharya in the tredition of Pandit Balwant Rai Ji Bhatt Bhavaranga, chief disciple of renowned musician Mahapandit Omkar Nath Ji Thakur of the prestigious Gwalior Gharana of Music. He is a specialized musician in Jaltarang and Shattantree Veena (Santoor). He has more than 10 years of teaching experience as a Head of Department of Instrumental Music at Sangeet Sansriti Sangam, Varanasi. Currently he is engaged as full time Santoor and Vocal trainer at International Music Center Ashram, Khalispura, Varanasi and gives music lessons to various Indian and foreign nationals.

Im Juli 2015 wollen Peter Hinz und Steffen Dix ihre Freunde aus Indien nach Deutschland einladen. Auf eine Woche mit intensiven Proben soll eine Konzert- und Workshop-Reihe folgen. Neben dem interkulturellen Austausch wird auch die traditionsreiche indisch klassische Musik präsentiert werden.
