INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT MUSEUM : THE HUMANITARIAN ADVENTURE
A complete makeover for the International Red Cross
and Red Crescent Museum!
Geneva, 27 February 2013 ‒ The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum (IRCM) is getting ready to open its doors again in May, 22 months after it closed for rebuilding work. As a prelude to that event, which will also be part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the Museum is taking on a new visual identity that is the brainchild of Integral Ruedi Baur Zürich. The IRCM is keen to involve the public in its message of hope as well as in the reopening festivities and will therefore be launching a huge participative and entertaining communication campaign, which has been dubbed
« Flagships of Hope ».
A new look
«Twenty-five years after it first opened in 1988, after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the advent of the digital era and the emergence of new humanitarian challenges, it seemed right for the Museum to alter its appearance to reflect the changes occurring in today's world », said IRCM Director, Roger Mayou. The IRCM decided not to do things by half! Apart from increasing the size of museum and totally overhauling the permanent exhibition, which will be open to the public in May, the Museum has given itself a complete facelift: a new visual identity and a fully revised website. The outcome of a competition entered by some of the best Swiss and international graphic design agencies was that the Museum entrusted the task of creating its new image to Integral Ruedi Baur Zürich. The proposal developed by Ruedi Baur and Axel Steinberger displayed accuracy and sensitivity in meeting the IRCM's expectations. With its hand-drawn logo, this new visual identity places the human being at the heart of the institution, suggesting a Museum that is accessible and outward-looking.
Flagships of Hope: a participative and entertaining
communication campaign
To involve the largest number of people in the reopening festivities, the IRCM will be launching a huge participative and entertaining communication campaign. Reminiscent of the campaign organized for its closure, this 2013 campaign is based on what testimonies, a fundamental aspect of humanitarian action ever since Henry Dunant's « A Memory of Solferino » was first published (1862). This initiative, dubbed
« Flagships of Hope », will kick off in early March. The roadshow will stop off in a number of towns in French-speaking Switzerland, German-speaking Switzerland and neighbouring France.

Kenya Red Cross Society is a Superbrand.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent movements were born of a desire to bring assistance without discrimination to the wounded on the battlefield, and endeavor to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found. Their mission is to protect life and health and ensure respect for the human beings, promoting mutual understanding, friendship, co-operation and lasting peace amongst all people.
Since its inception in 1965, Kenya Red Cross Society has been a voluntary relief Movement committed to the improvement of health, the prevention of disease and the mitigation of suffering in Kenya.
KRCS acts in times of armed conflict, and in peace acts within all fields covered by the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, on behalf of all victims of war, both civilian and military.
KRCS organises, within the scope of the National plan, emergency relief services for the victims of disasters and educates the population on being prepared and how to respond.
In May, 2013, KRCS initiated the reconstruction of livelihoods, Non-Food and food distributions, as well as setting up of medical outreach services in several parts of Kenya that were affected by recent flooding.
Following conflicts in Rhamu-Mandera in 2013 that led to the displacement of more than 6600 people and a number of deaths, KRCS distributed food to affected civilians. After discovering many were afraid of visiting hospitals in fear of continuing attacks, KRCS conducted medical outreaches.
The Kenya Red Cross Society over the years has been granted many accolades.
In 2011, KRCS received three awards from the Millennium Development Goals Trust Fund: MDG1 for Eradication of Extreme Poverty; MDG7 for Control and Management of Malaria, and Champion of the Year Award for the Kenya Drought Initiative.
More recently in 2012, KRCS was also awarded the Champions Awards MDG1 for its contribution in Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger, MDG3 for Reducing child mortality rates, and the Champions Award MDG7 for Ensuring Environmental Sustainability through its Watsan Project in Isiolo incorporating green energy.
KRCS is commited to being the most effective, most trusted and self-sustaining humanitarian organisation in Kenya, and is dedicated to protecting the well-being of the most vulnerable citizens of Kenya.

Red Cross International Comittee
The ICRC was founded as a result of the work of Henry Dunant, a Swiss, at the battle of Solferino (1859), where thousands of wounded French, Austrian and Italian soldiers were left without adequate medical care. Dunant's book -- A Memory of Solferino (1862) -- led to the adoption of the first Geneva Convention (1864), laying out rules to protect wounded soldiers and medics, and to the creation of relief societies in each country.
These bodies became known as Red Cross Societies, referring to the universal emblem adopted to identify and protect medical units. (The red crescent emblem was introduced in the 1880s.)
Since its foundation, the ICRC has played a humanitarian role in most of the conflicts that have taken place around the world. It has continuously worked to persuade States to expand the legal protection of war victims, to limit suffering.
The ICRC, the national societies and their International Federation form the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. In situations of armed conflict the ICRC coordinates the response by its Movement partners.
The ICRC has a permanent international mandate for its work. This derives from the 1949 Geneva Conventions -- agreed to by every State in the world -- and from the Statutes of the Movement.
However, the ICRC remains a private organisation governed by Swiss law and strictly independent in its governance and operational decisions. The Committee itself consists of up to 25 co-opted members, all Swiss. The ICRC's work respects the Movement's fundamental principles, notably those of neutrality, impartiality and independence.
The ICRC's annual budget in recent years has been in the region of one billion Swiss francs (USD, EUR...). Its principal donors are governments, regional organisations, national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies, municipal authorities, the private sector and members of the public. National societies also make an important contribution in terms of specialized personnel. ICRC accounts are explained every year in the annual report.
More than 1,400 specialized staff and generalists are currently on field missions for the ICRC across the globe. They work with some 11,000 local employees, supported and coordinated by around 800 staff at its Geneva headquarters. Expatriate staff members can be from countries anywhere in world; the ICRC is an equal opportunities employer.
The ICRC administers various special funds and awards for national societies, to help their work, or to Red Cross workers, either in recognition of their service or to provide practical assistance in case of hardship.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is the largest humanitarian association. It was created in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, and includes 189 National Societies.
