ABOUT THE EXIT:
So this was another hot exit in Iowa! Thermostat said 102 degrees - definitely thankful for air conditioning that day! We got off at exit 242 with the anticipation of seeing the Firefighter's Memorial. We like to pay our respects to all the public servants that have been and are. This memorial had a really nice indoors area that paid tribute to past and present Coralville firefighters, as well as those who gave their lives during 9/11. This was a peaceful place to go to sit and reflect.
We then continued our trip and stumbled across the Sitting Man, a seemingly random Buddha-like statue just sitting on top of a hill. We still haven't really found an answer to why he's there, or how long he's been there, so the mystery continues...
Anyways! Our journey continued and we ran across Woofable's, which caught our attention because we hadn't ever heard of it before. Upon further inspection, we figured out it is a gourmet pet bakery, specializing in healthy human-grade animal treats (if you watch the video, you'll learn more about what that means). We met and talked with the owner/founder, Laura, and one of her employees - Mason - and learned more about the business and her passion. The treats definitely made us hungry for something sweet. All in all, a great exit! We will see you all at the next exit, and ENJOYOURIDE!

Remembering Iowa's Firefighters
CORALVILLE, IA (CBS2/FOX28)-The 20th annual memorial service for Iowa firefighters was held today in Coralville to remember all who have served. Many families gathered at the Iowa Firefighters Memorial to honor their loved ones. For me personally, this is paying honor to all the people who have come before me to volunteer their lives for others who they had no idea who they were, Vice President of the Iowa Firefighter Association Marv Trimble said.He has volunteered for 32 years. These walls are more than just names but also faces to look up to.This is for the families, he added. He said that many families traveled from western Iowa and out of state to be here.Deb Johnson, who lost her husband said the second memorial isn't any different.Seeing his name on there is as hard as it was a year ago, she said.Johnson said that there is no bond like that between firemen.Everyone says he would give a shirt off his back even though he always didn't have a shirt on.Everybody sticks together, Mark Gerlach added. He is a volunteer firefighter and lost his dad a couple years ago from cancer. It's a tough situation. But he said that volunteering for the fire department was because of his dad. When your alarm clock goes off at 4 AM in the morning you never know what you'll get yourself into.A dedication that started with his dad and then was handed down to these men.He was a hero, Gerlach s

ANTHONY in Coralville, Iowa
This interview is with a young father who is about to make a major move across the country with his little family. He advises us, especially the youth, to not let opportunities slip by. He seems to be reflecting about some of the opportunities that may have passed him by but is determined to make some significant contributions to humanity, directly as well as through providing opportunities and an enriched environment for his daughter to develop into a contributor as well. This particular interview is a reminder to all of us to think of our dreams and do those things we dream of doing.

EYRNE 171 - Williamsburg Iowa Exit 225 I-80 Abandoned Colony Village Restaurant Wasserbahn at Amana
The World’s Largest Road Trip at exit 225 on I-80 in Iowa brings you to Williamsburg, Iowa near the Amana Colonies – This exit comes complete with the Wasserbahn Waterpark and Resort, Ramada, and Casey’s General Store. Wasserbahn boasts a small network of shops, restaurants, a well-kept miniature golf, and a winery/antiques.
Across the street we found an old once-thriving restaurant, the Colony Village. Judging by its exterior and what we could see of the interior, it used to be a family friendly, cozy-themed place for families traveling or staying at the waterpark to stop and enjoy. It currently sits vacant, a reminder of things that once were.
Once again (because of this exit’s closeness with past exits), you can get off here to head north towards the Amana Colonies – a cluster of 7 German villages that were founded in 1855 and are now listed as a National Historic Landmark that is well known for its artisan craft shops and restaurants. ENJOY!

UI App Better Connects Troopers With Doctors
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28)--About 33,000 people die in car crashes each year in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
They say 365 of those deaths in 2012 happened here, in Iowa.
Now researchers in the corridor are working on a new method of communication that could save lives, starting at crash scenes and following up at the emergency room.
When a crash happens on the roadways, state troopers are more often than not, the first ones on the scene, and in those situations, the goal is to save lives.
I know that's what doctors are all about but believe it or not, that's what state patrol are all about too saving lives, said Trooper Bob Conrad of the Iowa State Patrol.
Now there's an app for that.
University of Iowa researchers created an iPhone based app called TraumaHawk.
Its role is to improve communication between first responders like trooper Conrad and trauma doctors.
When there's a crash, usually one of the state troopers will kind of make sure the scene is safe and control traffic flow, and then they can take out their iPhone and open the app and they take these standardized pictures, said Chris Buresh, UI emergency medicine physician.
The app guides the trooper through taking pictures from various angles. It also prompts the trooper to enter information about the crash all that information is then sent to an iPad in the ER.
Doctors say knowing more details of the crash helps them determine the potential injuries they can expect before the patient gets to the hospital.
So if you see that the driver's side is pushed way in, you know that you're going to be dealing with some left sided shoulder and chest injuries, Buresh said.
Teamwork they hope will lead to more lives saved.
Time is of the essence, said trooper Conrad.
Testing is still ongoing. Researchers say the goal is to collect more data on how troopers are using the app.
