Iringole Kavu is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, situated in Kunnathunad Taluk of Ernakulam district, 5 km from Perumbavoor. This is one of the 108 Durga Temples in Kerala believed to have been concecrated by Lord Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Iringole Bhagavathy temple, also known as Iringole Kavu, is dedicated to the Bhagavathy who, in the form of a baby girl, took the place of Lord Krishna, to protect him from the hands of evil Kamsa. It is believed that the power of the goddess still remains in the thick dense forests at Iringole.
Situated in the tropical rain forest in Pattal, near Perumbavoor, Cochin, the Iringole Kavu resides the diety in the form of ‘’Vana Durga’’ as the Power of Forest. An amazing dense forest surrounded by big trees grabbed the attention of all. It is believed that the ‘Power’ is flanked by the numerous gods and goddesses on all sides in the form of thick trees and plants. The geneology of the temple dated back to the ‘Dwapara Yuga’ of Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology. When Kamsa, the uncle of Lord Krishna tried to kill the little girl child in fury, she glided away and sustained in air as a powerful radiance. This was called ‘’Irrinole’’- hence came the name for the temple as ‘Irrigole kavu.’The diety was in the form of ‘Yaga-Nidra’- a form of Maya (or illusion) . Any person coming here got struck by the rich flaura and fauna including teak, tamarind, mango, pine, monkeys, squirrels, mynah and rare medicinal plants. The turtles in the nearby lake also draws our undivided attention.

The temple, located in a 28-acre plot, is cut from a huge rock. The temple is owned by the Kallil Pisharody family. Studies indicate that the inception of the temple might date back to third century BC. This natural structure situated right in the middle of a jungle as wide as 28 acres is considered one among prime ancient Jain temples in Kerala. Kallil cave temple – a major tourist attraction is also a protected monument under the care of archeological research department.
Perhaps the place where the Jain Sanyaasis performed the thapasya eventually became a temple in the course of time. This is said to have become a Hindu temple in the 9th century AD. Even today Jain followers come here to offer prayers. It is believed that the idols seen there are of Jainatheertha Parswanathan, Mahaveer and Pathmavathi Davi. This temple Sree Kallil Bhagavathi Cave Temple Mathala is now considered as an Hindu temple.

Perumbavoor is a municipality in Ernakulam District in the Indian state of Kerala. It lies in the North Eastern tip of the Greater Cochin area and is also the headquarters of Kunnathunad Taluk. Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi Temple (Madayi Kavu) is the mother temple of all Bhadrakali shrines of North Kerala. The deity is the Fierce form of Bhadrakali. The Bhagavathy is addressed by tantrics in the vicinity as Tiruvarkkad Achchi due to this. The temple administration is Malabar Devaswom Board. The temple is a revered shrine of Chirakkal Royal Family and a shrine of Chirakkal devaswom before. The temple is situated in Madayi, Payangadi, hence prominently known as Madayi Kavu.

‘Iringole Kavu’ is a grove situated in Kunnathunad Taluk, Kerala State, which is five kilometers from Perumbavoor. Being one of the 108 Durga Temples Kerala, is said to be built by ‘Parashurama’ in the myth. The Bhagavathi temple is located between Kuruppumpadi and Perumbavoor in the Alwaye-Munnar route, 35 kilometers away from Ernakulam.
Formerly, administration of the temple was handled by 28 Brahmin families including ‘Pattasheri’, ‘Orozhiyam’ and ‘Nagancheri’. By the end of 1947, during the tenure of Sir C.P Ramaswami Iyer, administration of the temple was given to Travancore Devaswom Board. Exact details are not found about the origin of the temple.
It was one of a large number of ‘Kavu’ under the Nagancheri Mana. In 1980, ‘Iringole Kavu’ was handed over by the ancestor of the ‘Mana’, Vasudevan Namboothiri to the Perumbavoor Municipality, according to Land Development Law of 1963, as a person can't hold more than 15 acres for his own. At present, the ‘Kavu’ is at the under of Travancore Devaswom Board.

Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudevar due to the fear that their eighth son Krishna who is to be born soon would be his terminator from the earth. In fear and fury Kansa decided to kill their all sons. Vasudevar planned to save his eighth son from the danger at any cost. The parents shifted baby Krishna to Vrindavan soon after he was born and placed another girl baby (an incarnation of the goddess Yoga-Nidra or Maya) in the cradle. Kansa decided to kill the girl baby too, despite realising she was not the eight son of Vasudevar. He lifted the baby furiously above his head, but miraculously the baby became a supernatural power and remained in the atmosphere as 'IRRINNOLE'. Later this area was named as IRINGOLE. It is believed that the gods and goddesses surrounded the power in the forms of trees and plants. And later it is developed into a beautiful thick forest. It is owned by Naganchery Mana.now run by Travancore Devaswom.
