EUROVELO 13 - Serbia / Bulgaria border - Pirot to Dragoman train - Episode 2
EUROVELO 13 SERBIA BULGARIA.
In this episode, we explain how we travelled from Pirot in Serbia to Dragoman in Bulgaria. After hearing some horror stories about the road condition and new highway, it was generally suggested (by our EV13 guidebook too) that the short rail journey over the border was the best bet. We had no specific details on how to do this.. here's how we got on!
Point to note, in Serbia the EV signs we near perfect. After this, they simply do not exist yet through Bulgaria Macedonia Greece and Turkey (as of Nov 2018).
In this series I hope to show you the way and help you prepare!

That means curves realignment of existing railway line, digging two railway tunnel tubes through mountain Fruska Gora and construction of some large viaducts. The parf of this works can be seen at this video.
This cabride recorded from EC train 344 (Beograd - Wien Hbf) in the last moments of existence of this single track part of old railway line. From december 2018. main part between Stara Pazova and Novi Sad is closed for train traffic until the construction is completed.
Due to the construction of a new section between Stara Pazova and Indjija the trains between Beograd and Novi Sad had turnaround in the Golubinci station (railway line Beograd - Sid). Therefore, in this video, the train is redirected from the main route Beograd - Novi Sad to part of Beograd - Sid railway line. After turnaround the train is returned to the main route.

Belgrade Main railway station - The last days of its work - Last train departures - Beograd Glavna
After 134 years of its operation, Belgrade Main railway station is closed. The last day of train departures and arrivals was June 30, 2018.
The completely wrong traffic policy of the country has led to the removal of the railway from the city center of Belgrade. Today passenger trains are departing from station Belgrade Center (Prokop). The new railway station is not entirely built and it is located outside the city center and thus without the possibility of easy access.
In this clip, many recordings were made during the month of June. The work of the locomotive turntable, at locomotive depot Belgrade is also shown. There are also recordings made during the several cabview rides of old Belgrade railway junction. These recordings will be shown in its entirety in a new clips.
On June 15, 2018, the last train from Belgrade to Bar departured from the Main Railway Station in Belgrade. The last commercial train dispatched from this station is train 340 from Belgrade to Budapest, at 21:40, June 30, 2018. The departures of the last trains are emotionally accompanied with the song: A sad adio.

A night to remember in Belgrade, ola hyma...
Serbian Railways, Belgrade to Novi Sad, Serbia June 2014
While visiting my wife's family in Serbia in June 2014 I talked her into taking a trip to see another town, by rail of course! This is video I shot through a not so clean coach seat window on Serbian Railways (Железнице Србије / Železnice Srbije)from Belgrade (Beograd) to Novi Sad, Serbia (former Yugoslavia) for about a 60 mile trip. The day was really hot with no a/c for the trip north and top speeds reached 50 mph but was still enjoyable as this was my first trip on a train outside the US. The rail is mostly jointed with some block operators along the way and train dispatchers at the station, kind of like the olden days here!

15 Best Places to Visit in Serbia
Serbia has something for everyone, from lively urban attractions, to calm and peaceful towns and villages that dot the magnificent countryside. It is also known for being one of the cheapest destinations in the Balkans, so if you are planning a trip to the region then Serbia is well worth a visit.
Aside from a wealth of cultural and historic relics to enjoy, there is also a swinging cafe and bar scene as well as throbbing nightlife and some of arguably the world’s best music festivals. Whatever you do, don’t be put off by Serbia’s often uncomfortable history. Times have changed, and this is one place not to miss.
Let’s explore the best places to visit in Serbia:
1. Belgrade
Serbia’s capital Belgrade is located at the intersection between the Danube and the Sava rivers, and is an eclectic, if sometimes arresting, mix of old and new styles, from 19th century buildings to Art Nouveau structures.
There is a little bit of everything in Belgrade, including the dominating Kalemegdan Fortress, located in Kalemegdan Park, the remains of which stand today. The park is also home to the Military Museum that even features the remnants of a US Stealth Bomber for those keen to learn about the military history of the region.
Aside from the fortress there are Orthodox churches, colourful facades, and quaint squares aplenty, but for something more unexpected head over to the island of Ada Cinganlija or ‘Gypsy Island’ in the south of Belgrade to find yourself at something of a self styled beach resort. Here you will find beaches that stretch along the banks of the Sava, and you can enjoy swimming, water sports like waterskiing, and a large area of parkland for those who enjoy checking out the local plant and wildlife.
Tip: Have a look at the Bed ‘n’ Beer Hostel if you’re looking for a place to stay.
Tours: For tours check out Travel & Event Team Serbia
2. Fruška Gora Mountain and National Park
Located in the region of Syrmia, Fruška Gora Mountain is found on the border with neighbouring Croatia, and is affectionately known as the ‘Jewel of Serbia’. The mountain region includes a protected area known as Fruška Gora Park, and is studded with vineyards and wineries that are well worth a visit for grape enthusiasts. Rambling, hiking, climbing and picnicking are all popular pursuits in the region, but perhaps the biggest draw here are the Orthodox monasteries that are scattered all over the countryside, some of which are said to date back to the 12th century and are now protected. The scenery here is spectacular, and many visitors come to enjoy the stunning views and unhurried pace that allows you to explore the region at your leisure.
3. Sokobanja
Serbia is well known for its spa towns, once the retreat of choice of Roman emperors, and none more so than the town of Sokobanja in the east of the country. Locals and celebrities flock here for the thermal waters that are said to have deeply healing properties, and there is a public ‘hamam’ or steam room that dates from the 17th century. As well as the hot springs, visitors also travel to Sokobanja for the crisp air said to be high in negative ions and free from air pollution due to the increased elevation, leading to the phrase ‘climatic spa’ to describe the treatment that breathing in the fresh air provides.
4. Vinca
The region of Vinca, located outside of Belgrade, is one of the most important places in the history of Serbia, as it is home to the archaeological site Belo brdo, meaning ‘White Hill’. The area was made famous by the archaeological finds uncovered in Vinca, many made of stone or bone, including statues, ornaments, and drinking vessels, and visitors can tour the site as well as the museum that showcases these examples of Neolithic culture that are said to date from approximately 5,000 to 4,000 BC. Vinca is also known as a stop off point for river cruises along the Danube, and the local docks are famous for the fish restaurants that dot the neighbourhood for those who want to try some of the freshly caught fish on offer.
5. Kopaonik
If you like winter sports and happen to be visiting Serbia during the winter season, from December to April, then come to the Kopaonik mountain range and get ready to hit the slopes, whatever your level of ability or previous experience. There are a whopping twenty four ski lifts that service the area, and categories of slopes of all levels to choose from, as well as skiing and snowboarding available at the Kopaonik Ski Resort. If you happen to be travelling out of ski season, then there is still plenty to enjoy in Kopaonik, as you can partake in mountain climbing, hiking, and bird watching. Also of interest for hikers or ramblers are the wooden buildings that are plentiful in the region and include timbre shrines and churches.
and all are beautifull...
HAPPY TRAVLING
Belgrade - Heart of Serbia - Serbia Heart of The Balkans
Dijahtal Arts - In August 2015 I had a short but fantastic holiday in Belgrade before going to Guca for Dragačevski Sabor AKA the Guca Trumpet festival. In four days in Belgrade I visited numerous places and took these photographs using a Samsung Note 4. I visited Skadarlija in Stari Grad or Old Town. Skadarlija is also known as the Bohemian quarter of Belgrade. I think it is better than Montmartre in Paris, prettier, cheaper, more accessible and nicer people. It has lovely cobbled streets with restaurants, flowers and market stalls. I also walked to Karađorđeva near where the rivers Danube and Sava meet. There are posh restaurants by the river and large boats provide river trips from a nearby pier. There is also a nice jazz bar, one of many in Belgrade, higher up and overlooking the river. It is called the Jazz Basta or Jazz Garden. I also went to the enormous Kalemegdan Park which is a large wooded area where there is a fortress, museums, statues, art galleries, a zoo a botanical gardens and much more. I wandered around one art gallery known as the art pavilion Cvijeta Zuzorić. Here there was a macabre exhibition of moving puppet sculptors by Milija Nesic. In Belgrade there on of the largest Cathedrals in Europe., possibly the world. The Serbian Orthodox Christian 'temple' St Sava's is still being completed. Next to it is the the smaller church of St Sava which is completed and beautifully decorated. In my wandering I ate great food and drank excellent beer and Rakia, a powerful white spirit made from plums, damsons or quince. For my exploration of Belgrade and indeed Serbia in general I used a Guide book written by Professor Vladimir Majstorovic which I bought from Foyles in London. This kind of guide book, written by one informed person is far superior to the Lonely Planet Guide.
