Kauaʻi, anglicized as Kauai[a] (English: /kəˈwaɪ.i/; Hawaiian: [kɐˈwɐʔi]), is geologically the oldest of the main Hawaiian Islands. With an area of 562.3 square miles (1,456.4 km2), it is the fourth largest of these islands and the 21st largest island in the United States.[3] Known also as the Garden Isle, Kauaʻi lies 105 miles (169 km) across the Kauaʻi Channel, northwest of Oʻahu. This island is the site of Waimea Canyon State Park.
The United States Census Bureau defines Kauaʻi as census tracts 401 through 409 of Kauai County, Hawaiʻi, which comprises all of the county except for the islands of Kaʻula, Lehua and Niʻihau. The 2010 United States Census population of the island was 67,091.[4] The most populous town was Kapaʻa.
Awesome Surf Fishing Kauai Hawaii
Lures frequently used: Affiliate links
Recently, I visisted the wonderful island of Kuaui, Hawaii. I got to fish the surf with light tackle on several occasions. Landed a variety of fish, including several trumpet fish, many stocky hawkfish, and a few others. Had a much larger fish quickly snap my line on a fast run, truly thrilling! I hope you enjoy this short video showcasing some of these fish and the beautiful scenery of Kuaui! Catch and release!

Kauai Island (Lihue, Hawaii) 2017
Kauai, Hawaii 2010
Another great trip to Kauai and another batch of photos to sort through. Here are a few of my favorites. All photos taken with a Nikon D80. The ocean sound FX were recorded by me from a location near Anini Beach on the north side of the island. Photo locations included Polihali State Beach, Waimea Pier, Poipu Beach, Kapaa, Hanalei Bay, Ke'e Beach and a few other places. While in Kauai I stayed at a fantastic Ocean front condo in Kapaa. If you are planning a trip to I highly recommend checking out A great place with an incredit ocean view, centrally located and super reasonably priced. Great people to work with too!

Kauai Travel Tips: 9 Things to Know Before You Go
Things you NEED to know BEFORE you travel to Kauai Hawaii. Kauai is the oldest and smallest of the four main the Hawaiian Islands. It has a population of just 70,000 people. Elevation ranges from sea level to just over 5,000 feet. Kauai is home to the world's wettest location, Waialeale, which receives over 450 inches of rain annually - that's almost 40 feet! All that rain means lots of waterfalls
Only three percent of Kauai has been developed. It’s called the “Garden Isle” but it’s very country. You won’t find big cities or a lot of people on Kauai. You’ll find plenty of lush jungly wilderness to be explored though (we’re talking scenes straight out of Jurassic Park).
Lots of microclimates: You can go from the wettest place on Earth to a near-desert in 20 minutes
And a TON of chickens. There are more wild chickens on Kauai than any other Hawaiian Island largely thanks to “Iniki,” a category 5 hurricane, which hit the island in 1992.
The north shore is the lushest and prettiest of the island. It’s also the rainiest. (Princeville)
South side is the sunniest with good swimmable beaches, (Poipu)
East Shore has the Airport (Lihue)
West Shore relatively Un Developed (Na Pali Coast)
2 - Weather:
Temperatures range from the lower 50's in Kokee State Park to the upper 80's along the South shore. Kauai is considered to be semi-tropical and is home to a variety of micro-climates depending on your location around the island. In some places you'll need a light jacket, while in others a bathing suit is more than enough. It is also very common to be in rain one minute on Kauai, and in full sun the next.
Quite Windy -- 15-25 MPH Winds
3- Beaches:
Many of Kauai’s beaches aren’t swimmable.
dangerous currents, rip tides, and hammering surf.
conditions everywhere will be calmer in the summer months
On the north shore, big surf in winter but is calm in summer
Hanalei Bay -- 2 mile crescent bay (good in summer)
On the east coast, there’s a nice lagoon at Lydgate beach.
Kalapaki beach in Lihue - nice local beach
South Shore swimming is good at Poipu beach
South Shore gets its waves in summer
4- Hotels:
Everything is more expensive in the resort areas.
St Regis Princeville (swankiest resort area)
Grand Hyatt and Sheraton in Poipu
Marriott by the Airport in Lihue
5- Transportation:
Get a rental car -- it’ll probably be banged up
You’ll find the cheapest gas in Lihue/Kapa’a.
It can take forever to get around.
One road around the island (almost)
2-3 hours from one end to the other
Be aware of driving times when planning outings.
congestion around Lihue and Kapa’a during morning and evening commute times.
One lane bridge (North Shore): The local custom is to let 5-7 cars go at a time.
6- Shopping:
Costco in Lihue near the airport as well as a Safeway grocery store chain.
And if you need a pharmacy/drug store, that would be Longs
4 ABC Stores
7- Food:
Casual Attire is OK pretty much anywhere. Shorts and flip-flips are where it’s at. If you want to be really dressy, an Aloha shirt and Khakis.
Lots of places are just “take out” -- eat picnic style
Many places are breakfast and lunch only and close at 1:30 or 3pm.
The big resorts have fancy restaurants, and prices to go along with it
Duke’s restaurant at Kalapaki -- get the famous Hula Pie!
Eat where the locals eat, plate lunches, Asian Food
8- Big Attractions
9 - Hiking:
Pack water shoes for hiking. Many of the trails on Kauai are muddy or will require you to cross streams. It’s much easier if you do not have to worry about keeping your hiking boots clean and dry. Bring a map.

Queen's Bath Kauai
Queen's Bath, Princeville, Kauai. For detailed information including safety tips visit the following website:

Ep 2: A week in #Kauai. Exploring Kauai.
Visited Kauai for about a week in November of 2018.
Day 1: Took a helicopter ride by
Make sure to choose one without the door.
Day 2: Went on a snorkeling trip by
We were asked to go for a catamaran rather than the speed boats. Catamarans are much more stable with more room to roam about for a more comfortable journey. On our way to Napali coast, we also saw white bellied dolphins.
Day 3: We went for an early morning yoga at Princeville. After that, we decided to hike the Ho'opi'i falls. It is a very small hike with 3 waterfalls that you can take a dip into.
Day 4: We hiked and canoed to the Secret Falls. We had to take the canoe from the Kamokila Village, which is an authentic Hawaiian village. From there you take the canoe upstream to a spot where you can park and then hike about 45 mins to reach the Secret Falls. Remember to take good water shoes as the trail will get muddier with increasing tourists visiting the falls.
Day 5: We again went on a hike to the Awa'awapuhi Trail ( Hands down one of the best trails I have been on so far.
Day 6: We toured the island for one last time. We went north to Hanalei from where we shopped a bit, eat a lot and then drove south stopping at Kilauea Lighthouse and then at Poipu.
Our stay:
Restaurants we visited in no order of rating:
- Best poke in town. Must try! They also have a branch in Poipu, but recommend visiting the Hanalei one.
- Great vegan options. Beware! Roosters roam about around the tables, don't let them steal your food.
- Fresh juices. Try their Sugarcane Baby which is usually served on Thursdays and Saturdays.
- Sonal's favorite place in Kauai. They have large varieties of Acai bowls and juices which are made right there and then. Freshest juices on the island!
- Awesome views of the ocean. Great Mai Tais!
- As the site says, the best pasta in Kauai!
- Descent menu and food.
- Great coffee, we started our day with Ha coffee every other day while we were in Kauai.
- Awesome views of the largest pool on the island, great place to chill.
- Live music and good local food. Not a must visit, so plan accordingly.
