Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine, Oda, The mine itself was built in 1526 and was the most important mining site in Japan for almost 500 years, Iwami Ginzan Kamano-Ya.
This peaceful community was set up to house the miners in the latter early 1900.
The architecture is still being protected and preserved for educational and touristic purpose.

Oda is a city, at this time, one third of the world's silver came out of Japan, and Iwami Ginzan produced much of that silver.
Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine - Shimane - 石見銀山
Located deep in a mountainous district of Shimane in the village of Omori, you will find Iwami Ginzan, a historic silver mine now turned museum/attraction that was designated as a World Heritage Site in July 2007. Small in size compared to today’s standard, it is said that the Iwami Ginzan silver mine, was among the top ten producing silver mines in the world. It produced around 38 tons of silver per year, or ⅓ of the world’s production when the mine was still in activity! Its unique and exceptionally high quality silver, known as “Soma Silver”, was the reason for many sources of friction between local clans interested in taking control of all Iwami Ginzan mines since its acquisition in the early 1600s by the Tokugawa Shogunate.
While today the mines are closed, it is still possible for the public to visit part a small section of the network of the 600 shafts that once made Iwami Ginzan, via a 273m long tunnel known as the Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft.

Iwami-Ginzan Silver Mine.
Starting with its discovery in 1526, the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine was one of the world’s most prominent silver mines for 400 years. During the Age of Exploration it was known only as “The Silver Mine” to Europeans and at its peak was responsible for one-third of the world’s silver production. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, the first such mine to be registered in Asia. The site also includes the surrounding transportation routes, ports, mining towns and hot springs. The great significance of the ancient remains of Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine lies in the fact that abundant traces of silver production from the mining sites to transportation routes have survived almost intact to this day.

While most silver in the surrounding mines have been extracted, Iwami Ginzan Village is still thriving thanks to its many temples and of course its silver mine museum which has been a world heritage site since 2007.

かつて日本最大の銀山だった石見銀山。

島根県のユネスコ(UNESCO)世界遺産、石見銀山に行ってきました。
銀の発掘跡地ということですから、佐渡や土肥などのようなのかと思ってました。
でもここは、世界遺産としての保存は、ほとんど手を加えないという方向で行うというように感じました。
当時の発掘の様子を表した人形や、おみやげ売り場が派手な資料館もなく、龍源寺間歩の坑道へは遠くの駐車場からバスと山道を2キロも歩かないとたどりつけません。
世界遺産というステータスを観光客を呼ぶための道具に使うことなく、静かに後世に伝えたいという姿勢でしょうか、知らないけど。
