DYA717 Izu Feb 8, 2017, Japan Shimoda
DYA717 Feb 8, 2017 Japan Shimoda -- Yesterday, I asked the tourist info office person what to do with my one day left. He suggested a walking route around Mishima and/or a trip down to Shimoda. I opted for Shimoda because I wanted to go there but thought it was too far and that I had to change trains, etc, etc. This morning I started from Mishima, changed train at Atami and got off at the Izukyu-Shimoda station. Duck soup! I guess I had old information which indicated that JR didn’t go all the way down to Shimoda and you had to change to a private line. Somehow they’ve negotiated something so I can buy one ticket at the JR station. JR railpasses have restriction in that railpass guys have to pay a surcharge. TMI for most of you. Got onto the Shimoda Ropeway (1100-yen) which is a a cablecar ride up to Mount Nesugata. Nice view of of Shimoda from up high. Visited a coupla temples, then pass a section of town with really old preserved buildings. Saw the place where Perry landed in Japan. Starting to wear out so I headed back to the train station. I had lunch in the restaurant at the station. No English menu with little English spoken here. I opted for a picture lunch of a salmon sashimi bowl. ONO! I asked the ticketing agent to get me on the next super view Okoriko train again (5160-yen) and had to wait an hour. Nice and comfortable. They serve draft beer on board. Got back to Mishima around 4:30 p.m. Dinner was a salad and chicken bento from Family Mart! Really high class yeh? Ramen snack at 9:36 p.m. and I called it a day! Tomorrow I fly back to HNL! Aloha!
Tokyo to Shimoda in Izu 200KM in 12 hours!
New challenge, 200KM in a day with my trekking bike(14kg+lugqges).
See how hard it is to ride from the busy city of Tokyo to the wonderful beach in Shimoda at the extreme south of Izu.
