Johann Nepomuk Hummel - Piano Concerto No. 3, Op. 89 (1819)
Johann Nepomuk Hummel (Born 14 November 1778 Pressburg/Pozsony, Kingdom of Hungary (now Bratislava, Slovakia) Died 17 October 1837 (aged 58) Weimar, Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (now Thuringia, Germany) was an Austrian composer and virtuoso pianist. His music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era.
Piano Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 89 (1819)
I. Allegro moderato
II. Larghetto (17:00)
III. Finale: Vivace (24:53)
Stephen Hough, piano and English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Bryden Thomson
Piano Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 89 was composed in Vienna in 1819 and published in Leipzig in 1821.
Unlike his earlier piano concerti, which closely followed the model of Mozart's, the B minor concerto along with the slightly earlier Concerto No. 2 is written in a proto-Romantic style that anticipates the later stylistic developments of composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel - Introduction & Rondeau brillant in F minor, ‘Le Retour à Londres’, Op. 127, Alessandro Commellato (fortepiano), Solamente Naturali (on period instruments), Didier Talpain (conductor)
1.Introduction (Largo) – 0:00
2.Allegretto vivace – 3:40
Johann Nepomuk Hummel (14 November 1778 – 17 October 1837) was an Austrian composer and virtuoso pianist. His music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era.
Hummel was born in Pressburg, Kingdom of Hungary, then a part of the Austrian Habsburg Monarchy (now Bratislava in Slovakia).
Johann Nepomuk Hummel remained one of Europe's most celebrated virtuosi until the early 1830s. There were lengthy periods, however, when he did not perform in public and it was really his return to the concert platform in 1814 that laid the foundations for his immense popularity during the next ten to fifteen years of his life. His longevity as a performer owed as much to his vigour and resourcefulness as a composer as it did to his formidable technique as a pianist. Hummel's receptiveness to new musical trends and his ability to develop and exploit them was fundamental to his success as an artist. Hummel's improvisatory powers were exceptional and improvisations formed an important component in his concerts.
“The Rondo brillant Op.127, subtitled 'Le retour de Londres' (or sometimes 'Le retour à Londres', which is more logical), brings us to Hummel's final period of creativity. Indeed, it was the last of his compositions to be published during his lifetime. It was composed in 1833 (and published two years later by Haslinger in Vienna) on the occasion of Hummel's fourth and final visit (following those of 1790-92, 1830 and 1831), aged 55, to London, bringing to an end 45 years of touring. The Rondo, which is not dissimilar to Weber's Konzertstiick for Piano and Orchestra Op.79 (written in 1821 and in the same key of F minor), opens with a sombre, almost tragic introduction, recalling the first bars of Beethoven's Egmont Overture (1810), also in F minor.” (from Album Notes, Didier Talpain)

Op. post. 1, one would expect to be an early work but it isn't— it was his last concerto, published after his death. In the first movement, after a lengthy orchestral introduction, the piano makes its dramatic entrance. The rather short (6:30) slow center movement includes an extended cadenza and the concerto ends with a brilliant Allegro con brio. It's difficult to understand why this concerto wasn't well received at its premiere in London in 1833.

The Variations and Finale in B flat, Op. 115, illustrate the vitality of Hummel's musical imagination at the height of his career. The work is arguably the more interesting, not because the variations themselves are intrinsically better but rather in the way in which Hummel treats the music of another composer in one of his own works.
The work is introduced by a lovely 6/8 Larghetto which is unrelated to the ensuing theme and variations. The theme itself, a perky little tune from the Berlin Local-Singspiel ‘Das Fest der Handwerker’, is a simple, symmetrical binary construction in 3/4 with repeats. Hummel's variations are far more fluid in their construction, eschewing the obvious binary structure of the theme in order to allow a more extensive exploration of its elaborations. Some variations are linked; others are separated by brief orchestral interludes.
