THE GLOWING BIO BAY IN VIEQUES PUERTO RICO
Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show.
Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera.
The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking.
This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip!

Vieques 2018
3 of us traveled to Vieques from San Juan, PR to Vieques. We flew on Vieques Air Link (sold as Seaborn). We stayed at Flamboyan Guest House. Ate at Duffy's, Bananas, Lydia's Bakery, and El Timbiriche (food truck).
Details and information you should know:
▪ The flight to/from San Juan to Vieques was booked on the Seaborn website ( however, when we went to check-in for our flight at San Juan airport (SJU), Seaborne claimed no responsibility. They referred us to another check-in counter which was Vieques Air Link. If you're arriving into SJU, and gathering your checked-in baggage, you need to go to the 2nd floor of the airport and go all the way over to the left hand side of the counters and look for VIEQUES AIR LINK (it is right next to Avianca Airlines). You need to be there at least 1.5 hours before flight departure as the workers their are multi-tasking (i.e. checking you in and loading your luggage on the plane).
▪ Maritza's Car Rental:
They pick you up at Vieques Airport, which is literally 7 minutes away. Their advice: Don't lock your cars at night (Obviously, don't leave any valuables in there). They say this because locals will check for items and if they find the car closed they may break the windows. We had no problems even with the car unlocked the entire time. Also, we recommend you get the CDW for $12 a day. Worth it, as local drivers
▪ Flamboyan Guest House:
Great place to stay! Alyssa was a great hostess! Very responsive and answered EVERY text we sent! Even hand-delivered an iron to us!
▪ BioBay Tours - JAK Waters Sports:
We went to experience the Bioluminescent bay! Denise was amazing! Also very responsive and informative.
▪ El Timbiriche, La Esperanza (food truck):
This food truck is located just steps from Flamboyan Guest House. As of this writing Juan was opened from 6am to 11am, serving full breakfast and breakfast sandwiches. Great sandwiches at a great price! He does accept credit and debit cards!
