DEAN TANYA ZLATEVA: At this time I am proud to present Jacques Pépin as our 2015 Metropolitan College Commencement Speaker.
Celebrated chef, host of 12 popular cooking series, Jacques is also a gifted artist and author of more than two dozen cookbooks and a delightfully mischievous memoir.
Jacques' energy and creativity are unstoppable. A new cooking series is scheduled to air on PBS this fall along with a companion cookbook, both in time for his 80th birthday.
Born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, near Lyon, he began his formal training at 13 with apprenticeships in Paris, first at the distinguished Grand Hôtel de L’Europe and then under Lucien Diat at the Hotel Plaza Athénée.
He served as personal chef to three French heads of state, including Charles de Gaulle. Established in France, Jacques felt the attraction of the New World.
He moved to the United States in 1959, and worked at Le Pavillon, a historic French restaurant in New York City.
Later, he became director of research and new development for Howard Johnson’s, in charge with developing a line of food for the restaurant chain.
While working, and this will sound familiar, he earned his bachelor’s degree, then a master’s in 18th-century French literature at Columbia University.
Both his home country and his adopted country have celebrated Jacques' achievements. Honors conferred by the government of France include Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Chevalier de L'Ordre du Mérite Agricole, and in 2004, the National Order of the Legion of Honor.
In the US, Jacques starred in the PBS series with culinary icon Julia Child, called Julia and Jacques: Cooking at Home. This 22-episode series won an Emmy Award and a James Beard Foundation Award.
At Boston University, chef Pépin co-founded with Julia Child the Metropolitan College master's in Gastronomy and the certificate in Culinary Arts.
These programs established a tradition of integrating a hands-on culinary experience with the academic study of cuisine in society.
We are privileged having Jacques on the faculty since 1983. In recognition for the hundreds grateful students he has taught, Metropolitan College honored him with the Roger Deveau Part-Time Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and Boston University conferred upon him an honorary degree in humane letters.
for its elegance and smiling creativity. Less frequently mentioned is the tradition of hard work and extreme discipline.
Dr. Pépin exemplifies these deeply French qualities, but he also embraced the American love of experimentation, of readiness to integrate disparate culture.
The result is a century old culinary knowledge, made young, and deliciously worldly. Jacques, the floor is yours.
JACQUES PÉPIN: Good evening! Thank you, Dean Tanya Zlateva, for inviting me, and Katherine Moran and Ruth Ciolfi for coordinating my visit.
I especially want to thank Rebecca Alssid, my dear friend and director of the Gastronomy Program, for all your years of support and love.
Even though I have been teaching at BU for more than 30 years, you can hear from my accent that I am not from Boston; I am actually from Connecticut.
When I started teaching at BU in 1983, I would never have thought that someday I would be giving the commencement address here. This is a great honor.
Today, as your speaker, I am here to inspire you; I am not sure that I can do that, but I will try.
Born in France into a family of restaurateurs, I left school at age 13 to enter cooking apprenticeship and, eventually, worked in some of the most prestigious restaurants in Paris and, at some point, was even the personal chef to French President Charles de Gaulle.
I had a flourishing career in France, but my dream was to come to America. America was the El Dorado, the Golden Fleece—and all young people dreamed of America.
I thought I would come for a couple of years, learn the language, and then return to France.
Well, this was more than half a century ago, and I am still here. I came here on a student boat at the end of 1959 and starting working at the Le Pavillon, a renowned French restaurant in Manhattan...

Pro-life-Awsome HS Kids Hope & Future The Cradle of Liberty Tale of Two Tragedies
film was directed, shot, and edited by students — radiantly on fire for life High schoolers’ powerful new pro-life film compares abortion to Boston bombing “In the Cradle of Freedom - A Tale of Two Tragedies,”
film was directed, shot, and edited by students — radiantly on fire for life — from Immaculate Heart of Mary School located in Still River, MA.
The video challenges viewers to work towards ending the hidden reality of abortion through public witness and prayer.
“When will the scourge of abortion be taken from our country? When enough hearts have been converted through prayer and public witness, and the value of the individual soul is realized,” states another student.
STILL RIVER, MA, June 2, 2015 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- A group of Catholic high school students from Massachusetts released a slick video last week in which they draw a compelling parallel between the slaughter and carnage caused by the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing and the killing that takes place daily inside Boston’s Planned Parenthood abortion centers.
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of Boston, another tragedy is taking place. Here at Planned Parenthood lives are being lost daily. Since the Marathon bombing, thousands of innocent children have been brutally murdered. The cradle of liberty has been violated. Where are the responders? Who is coming to the rescue?” states one of the students in the film.
Shot on location in Boston and titled “In the Cradle of Freedom - A Tale of Two Tragedies,” the film has the goal of spreading the message about the value of every human life.
The film was directed, shot, and edited by students — radiantly on fire for life — from Immaculate Heart of Mary School located in Still River, MA. The school is run by the Slaves of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Lisa Blevins, Campaign Director for 40 Days for Life in Tempe, Arizona called the film a “call for the public to respond with bravery and determination” to the injustice of abortion.
“This video has the ability to inspire and encourage others to feel the Holy Spirit calling upon them to become a leader in the pro-life movement, or be one of the faithful who pray and stand witness,” she told LifeSiteNews.
“Not only does this video have testimony from a former Planned Parenthood worker, it is led by students. The need for student leadership is now. Student leadership is powerful and motivating,” she said.
The former Planned Parenthood worker does an excellent job of stripping the veneer off of abortion as a safe, clinical, and humane procedure.
“The horror that goes on here takes place behind closed doors,” the former abortion worker testifies in the film.
“Nobody, except the workers, have to see the carnage, the bodies of thousands of children torn limb-from-limb, their tiny mangled bodies thrown away like trash.”
“The world is silent, oblivious to what goes on here. But, I know from first hand experience. I used to work in this very building for two years,” she said.
The video challenges viewers to work towards ending the hidden reality of abortion through public witness and prayer.
“Is the lack of response due because there are no explosions, no screams heard, no blood flowing on the streets, no body parts flying, and no chaos? Do the horrifying signs of death need to be seen in order to produce a response,” asks one student.
“When will the scourge of abortion be taken from our country? When enough hearts have been converted through prayer and public witness, and the value of the individual soul is realized,” states another student.

Alfred McCoy: In the Shadows of the American Empire: The Rise and Decline of US Global Power
A presentation on Dec. 10, 2017 at The Community Church of Boston
Alfred W. McCoy drew upon his new book “In the Shadows of the American Century,” to analyze the dynamics of the U.S. rise to global power, and the unique way Washington has exercised that global hegemony for the past 70 years, particularly the covert dimension. He then analyzed the geopolitical changes in the vast Eurasian land mass eroding US dominion, and the political manifestations of a US world order in crisis, including populism and hyper-nationalism.
Alfred W. McCoy is the J.R.W. Smail Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author of “In the Shadows of the American Century” and “A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, From the Cold War to the War on Terror”. McCoy has been recognized as “one of the world’s leading historians of Southeast Asia and an expert on Philippine political history, opium trafficking in the Golden Triangle, underworld crime syndicates, and international political surveillance.
This event was initiated and co-sponsored by the American Friends Service Committee and the Campaign for Peace, Justice and Common Security, and co-sponsored by Haymarket Books.

Time Lapse: Portland, Maine through 5 States to Montréal, Québec
July 15, 2017 - They said it couldn't be done...but they were wrong!
In just six hours I traverse through five states (and one Canadian province)! Starting in Portland, Maine, I took the long way back to Montréal through New Hampshire, Massachusetts (at the very fringe of the Boston metro area), Vermont, and the northeast corner of New York state back to La Belle Province of Québec.
Along the way I take a few side trips to Old Orchard Beach, Maine; a few Fallout 4 references as I briefly touch upon the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; getting lost looking for lunch in White River Junction, Vermont; a quick drive-through of Burlington, the largest city in Vermont and stomping ground to Senator Bernie Sanders; and finally, visiting the lake monster Champ on the shores of Lake Champlain on the Vermont/New York border.
Once back in Canada on a beautiful Saturday evening, I pass through downtown Montréal, pay homage to my Montréal Canadiens of the NHL at their home arena, the Bell Centre, and then out west to Dorval, near the airport, for my final night away on this adventure.

Massachusetts residents wake up to another big snowstorm. Governor Charlie Baker declares public sa
Boston has set a record for the most snow recorded in a 30-day period, and more is on the way.
The National Weather Service said Boston had received 61.6 inches in the last 30 days by 7 a.m. Monday, breaking the record of 58.8 inches in one 30-day period ending in February 1978.
Governor Charlie Baker says concerns now are for the weight of snow on roofs and ice dams forming around drainage systems.
He asks residents who can get out to a fire hydrant to help remove snow from around the hydrant in case of emergencies.
Logan International Airport had a little more than a foot by 7 a.m. from a storm that was expected to last all day and add several more inches.
The weather service reported an unofficial measurement of almost 20 inches in Weymouth and 18.5 inches in Norwell as of Monday morning
The good news is that power outages Monday were minimal.
