JS: From a sanctuary to a killing zone: Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. 7/9/2012.
GooseWatchNYC's Press release:
Español:
On Monday, July 9th, 2012, USDA agents killed 751 Canada geese at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge under the guise of air safety concerns.
Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand asked USDA to kill the geese.
Sen. Gillibrand has ignored our plea to reconsider plans for a mass slaughter, and turned a blind eye toward New Yorkers who love animals and care about the preservation of wildlife._David Karopkin, Founder and Director of GooseWatch NYC.
Carbon dioxide asphyxiation used by the USDA is an especially cruel process that slowly strangles geese as they struggle to breathe and compete for oxygen, said John G. Hynes, DVM, USDA Accredited Veterinarian, NY & NJ.
Since Monday (June 25th, 2012), goose collectors from the federal Department of Agriculture have corralled and hauled away 255 geese at 12 parks, with a goal of capturing 400 geese at 14 parks, the city Department of Environmental Protection said on Thursday (June 28th)._New York Times
This indiscriminate slaughter is inhumane, ineffective and not supported by science. It is the wrong way to address the goose population, especially when more humane and scientific solutions exist and have been successfully implemented._Patrick Kwan, New York state director for the Humane Society of the United States
The city is trying to spin the killing of New York City's Canada geese as being a charitable act because their carcasses will be donated to food banks instead of dumped in landfills, under the guise of doing everything possible to help those in need._David Karopkin.
The plan to feed homeless people the potentially tainted carcasses of these birds through a local soup kitchen or food bank sets a dangerous double standard in which poor men, women and children will eat unregulated and insufficiently inspected flesh._Mary E. Brosnahan, Executive Director for Coalition for the Homeless
Senator Gillibrand turned Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge into a killing zone this morning, as 751 Canada geese were rounded up, removed and slaughtered while they were molting and unable to fly — thanks to Gillibrand's wrong-headed, shocking attack on geese in NYC's only federally protected bird sanctuary._Edita Birnkrant, NY Director of Friends of Animals.
It's a total disgrace that USDA agents have been allowed to enter the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and commit acts of violence on peaceful families of Canada geese. This flies in the face of everything that a wildlife refuge represents._Barbara Stagno, In Defense of Animals
This is a very sad day for New York City and for the world. We will not stop seeking an end to this savagery.

Growing A Wild NYC - Creating and Restoring Pollinator Habitat
Growing A Wild NYC launched in 2014 in response to the dire situation facing pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Pollinator populations are declining around the world due to habitat loss, overuse of pesticides, parasites, and disease. Additionally, climate change and extreme weather events are disrupting natural cycles and migration patterns. In the United States, one third of all agricultural output depends on pollinators so the creation of pollinator habitat is essential for their survival and ours.
The program works with students in kindergarten through high school across NYC. Students grow native plants from seeds that they collect and turn ground once filled with non-flowering invasive plants into thriving gardens that support monarch butterflies, bees, and countless other pollinators. The program brings nature into the classroom and kids out into nature through classroom work and field trips.
Growing A Wild NYC established its first pollinator garden at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens which was severely impacted by Super Storm Sandy. There are now sites at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, Battery Park in Manhattan, and numerous school gardens across New York City.
To date, 17 schools and over 2,000 kids have participated in Growing A Wild NYC. The program is a collaboration among the National Wildlife Federation, National Park Service, Student Conservation Association, NYC Department of Education, the Battery Conservancy, Greenbelt Native Plant Center, Groundwork Hudson Valley, Green Earth Urban Gardens, Metropolitan Monarch Alliance, Community Greenways Collaborative, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
#SaveOurOcean - Your Litter is Killing Marine Life
Do you know what litter does to marine life? Seventh graders from East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York City made this short video to explain how our plastic street litter ends up in our rivers, bays and, oceans and eventually into the stomachs of fish, birds and other marine wildlife.
These students conducted a beach litter survey and clean-up ay Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens, NY. They surveyed to find out exactly what types and how much litter was on this urban National Park beach.
Ranger Dan Meharg explains how so much litter ends up on the Jamaica Bay beaches. Street litter travels through sewer pipes and ends on the beach and in the ocean. Even if you are miles away, in some other part of New York City, and you drop your litter onto the street, it may likely end up coming out of an outfall pipe somewhere into a river or the bay.
If we are going to have a nicer place for people, birds, animals, and fish, we all need to work together to drop less things on our streets, says Ranger Dan.
Among the litter items that students from MS 246 Walt Whitman collected and surveyed on the beach were plastic bottles, plastic food wrapping and plastic carryout bags. After sorting all the litter, one can easily get a visual idea of just how much of this plastic litter is leaking into our waters on a regular basis. Beach clean-ups help, but they are not the solution to stop the leakage of plastics into our oceans.
We all need to reduce the amounts of single-use plastics that we use, from plastic carryout bags, straws, cups, lids, styrofoam food containers, and plastic forks and spoons, and more. Start by refusing to take a plastic straw and bringing your bag!

Take action to protect our precious marine wildlife, our fish and other seafood that are being poisoned by the estimated trillions of tiny bits of plastic litter in oceans across the globe.
Contact Governor Cuomo and let him know that do not approve of the state legislature blocking our local NYC law to reduce plastic bag use. Find more info here:
And call your NYC City Councilmember to see if she/he has signed on the NYC Council bill, Intro 1596, a bill to ban styrofoam (aka polystyrene) to go containers from NYC. Find more information here:

Bird Watching Central Park New York City (NYC)
We spent a wonderful day at Central Park bird watching. The Camera we used was a Canon SX210 IS.
Some of the footage might shake a little, since I was trying out this new camera super zoom. The videos overall are good and I enjoyed. Also you might notice the sound of the lenses zooming in -- out. Well, I am not complaining. Overall I am very happy with this Canon SX 210 IS.
If you know the name of these birds, please right in the comments!
I know that I got Geese and Dove footage. The red bird -- in my opinion the prettiest of the video -- I do not know the name, so would be great if someone can tell me. As right now I am thinking to be a red robin.
Thank you for watching!
Bird Whisperer (Belvedere Castle at Central Park, New York City)
My nephew, Trey, and I went birding last Saturday at Central Park. Trey LOVES birds. I had no idea Central Park had so many species of birds! We had a fantastic time.
The Central Park Conservancy has Discovery Kit backpacks available to borrow free of charge at Belvedere Castle on an ongoing, year-round basis. Each one contains binoculars, a guidebook, maps and sketching materials. Valid picture identification is required, and an adult must accompany children under 12 years of age. Discovery Kits are available from 10:00 am - 3:30 pm (and must be returned by 4:30 pm) during open days (Tuesday-Sunday or Wednesday-Sunday seasonally). Call 212-772-0210 for more information.
Must-have iPhone app for the birder: Audubon Birds
Approximately 230 different species of birds can be found in Central Park during the year. Most birds are more active in the early morning and late afternoon, although there will be some activity throughout the day. Some birds live in Central Park all year long, while others visit only at certain times of the year. Central Park has become an important stopover for several species to rest and feed during fall and spring migrations. In late spring and summer, many birds in Central Park build their nests, lay eggs and raise their young. Watch for young birds learning to fly.

Nassau County, New York
Nassau County is a suburban county on Long Island in the U.S. state of New York. At the 2010 census, the county's population was 1,339,532, estimated to have increased to 1,358,627 in 2014. The county seat is located in the Village of Garden City, within the boundaries of the Mineola 11501 zip code. The name of the county comes from an old name for Long Island, which was at one time named Nassau, after the Dutch Prince William of Nassau, a member of the House of Nassau, itself named for the German town Nassau. The county colors are also the colors of the House of Orange-Nassau.
Nassau County is located immediately east of New York City, within the New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is one of the four counties that occupy Long Island, together with Suffolk County to its immediate east and Queens and Kings counties to the west, which correspond, respectively, to the New York City boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. Two cities, three towns, 64 incorporated villages, and more than 60 unincorporated hamlets are located within the county. There are 56 public school districts within the county. Post office districts and school districts use the same names as a city, hamlet, or village within them, but each sets the boundaries independently.

SUMMARY
=======
Queens is a borough of New York City, coterminous with Queens County, in the U.S. state of New York. It is the largest borough geographically and is adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the southwestern end of Long Island. To its east is Nassau County. Queens also shares water borders with the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. The borough of Queens is the second largest in population (after Brooklyn), with an estimated 2,358,582 residents in 2017, approximately 48 percent of them foreign-born. Queens County also is the second most populous county in the U.S. state of New York, behind Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each of New York City's boroughs were an independent city, Queens would be the nation's fourth most populous, after Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.Queens was established in 1683 as one of the original 12 counties of New York. The settlement was presumably named for the English queen Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705). Queens became a borough during the consolidation of New York City in 1898, and from 1683 until 1899, the County of Queens included what is now Nassau County.
Queens has the most diversified economy of the five boroughs of New York City. It is home to John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport, both among the world's busiest, which in turn makes the airspace above Queens among the busiest in the United States. Landmarks in Queens include Flushing Meadows–Corona Park; Citi Field, home to the New York Mets baseball team; the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, site of the US Open tennis tournament; Kaufman Astoria Studios; Silvercup Studios; and Aqueduct Racetrack. The borough has diverse housing, ranging from high-rise apartment buildings in the urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Ozone Park, Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to somewhat more suburban neighborhoods in the eastern part of the borough, including Douglaston–Little Neck and Bayside. The Queens Night Market in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park attracts over 10,000 people nightly to sample food from over 85 countries.
