Newport Pell Bridge eastbound
The Newport Pell Bridge is a suspension bridge that crosses the eastern channel of Narraganset Bay between Conanicut Island and Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island. The bridge, which opened in 1968, is the tallest bridge in New England and New England’s longest suspension bridge, with a main span length of over 1,500 feet and a height of 1,919 feet above mean high water level at the center of the main span.
The bridge was the final construction link in the original Rhode Island Turnpike, which once connected the mainland of the state with Massachusetts via the Narraganset Bay Islands. Most of the old turnpike alignment has today been removed and replaced with local boulevards and surface streets, but Rhode Island State Route 138 between Aquidneck Island and the mainland still retains it’s expressway status, and the Newport Pell Bridge continues to impose a $4.00 toll on motorists wishing to cross the bridge.

ABOUT HELENA AND BUCK FROM THAT NEWPORT SHOW Buck and Helena from That Newport Show are a couple of old punks who survived what they call “the toddler years” (plus a few extra). As they slowly regain their sanity, they are once again venturing out into the world to get their party on. They may be a bit slower these days, but they are also a lot wiser. And honestly, a lot more fun. Buck Harris Buck’s new to the Rhody game, but not even close to new when it comes to having a good time. He’s charming, smart, and handsome. If you’ve got a party going on, Buck’s the guy who will make it fun. But don’t let his good looks and charm fool you. He is wicked smaaht, too. When he isn’t tooling around Newport with his honey, Buck has a serious job as Vice President for an economic development group that finances and supports small businesses in Rhode Island. Buck has two beautiful, horse-addicted daughters of his own. With the benefit of hindsight and a little encouragement from Helena, he is completely redefining what it means to be a grown-up. (Hint: It’s way more fun than it used to be.) Helena Bee Born and raised just north of NYC, Helena is a fireball of Italian pride mixed with a good dose of Yankee practicality. Now a full-time Rhode Island resident, Helena’s adventures have mostly been on horseback. Yeah, she’s one of those people. In fact, she co-founded the #1 equestrian network in the world, the Horse Radio Network. As a veteran podcaster, she also hosts HRN’s super popular Stable Scoop Radio Show. When not behind the mic recording shows, Helena tends to her two horses, a 13-year-old whipper snapper of a kid, and everything that farm life demands. Dutch Island (Rhode Island) - Video Learning - WizScience.com
Dutch Island is an island lying west of Conanicut Island at an entrance to Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, USA. The island is a part of the town of Jamestown, Rhode Island, and has a land area of 0.4156 km² . It was uninhabited as of the 2000 census.
Dutch Island's Indian name was Quotenis or Quetenesse. Around 1636 Abraham Pietersen van Deusen of the Dutch West India Company established a trading post on the island to trade with the Narragansett Indians, trading Dutch goods, cloths, implements, and liquors for the Indians' furs, fish, and venison. Several years later the Dutch built Fort Ninigret nearby. In 1654 English colonists purchased the island from the Indians. In 1825 the federal government acquired 6 acre at the southern end of the island, and on January 1, 1827, Dutch Island Light was established to mark the west passage of Narragansett Bay and to aid vessels entering Dutch Island Harbor. The first 30 feet tower was built of stones found on the island. The government constructed a new 42 feet brick tower in 1857 with a fog bell added in 1878. As of 2007, the island is part of the Bay Islands Park system of Rhode Island owned by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management . The island is easily accessible by kayak today off the coast of Conanicut Island . No remnants of the Dutch trading post exist today, but a lighthouse and military buildings remain on the island.
The Fort was named in honor of 1st Lt. John Trout Greble, 2nd Artillery, USA, who was the first officer of Regular Army killed in Civil War. In 1863, the land was sold to the Federal Government, and the island was completely taken over by 1864.

Jamestown, Virginia
The Jamestown settlement in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. William Kelso says Jamestown is where the British Empire began,... this was the first colony in the British Empire. Established by the Virginia Company of London as James Fort on May 4, 1607 (O.S., May 14, 1607 N.S.), and considered permanent after brief abandonment in 1610, it followed several earlier failed attempts, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Jamestown served as the capital of the colony for 83 years, from 1616 until 1699.
The settlement was located within the country of Tsenacommacah, which was administered by the Powhatan Confederacy, and specifically in that of the Paspahegh tribe. The natives initially welcomed and provided crucial provisions and support for the colonists, who were not agriculturally inclined. Relations with the newcomers soured fairly early on, leading to the total annihilation of the Paspahegh in warfare within 3 years. Mortality at Jamestown itself was very high due to disease and starvation, with over 80% of the colonists perishing in 1609-1610 in what became known as the Starving Time.
