The Japan Ukiyoe Museum (Nihon Ukiyoe Hakubutsukan) exhibits ukiyoe (woodblock prints) from the vast collection of the Sakai family. One of Matsumoto's wealthiest merchants of his time, Sakai Yoshiaki started collecting ukiyoe and other pieces of art dating back to roughly 300 years ago. His descendants have been enlarging the collection to over 100,000 pieces, making it one of the world's largest private art collections.
In contrast with the size of the collection and the museum building, the number of works exhibited in the Japan Ukiyoe Museum is rather small. One reason is because of the fact that the building was originally built only for storage rather than exhibition purposes. Only brief information in English is provided for the exhibits.
Access info.
The Japan Ukiyoe Museum is located about three kilometers outside of Matsumoto's city center, close to Matsumoto Interchange of the Nagano Expressway.
The museum can be reached in a 10 minute taxi ride from Matsumoto Station (about 1500 yen from the station's Alps Exit) or in a 15-20 minute walk from Oniwa Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line (5 minutes, 170 yen from Matsumoto Station).

Grandfather of Manga | Ukiyo-e in Nagoya, Japan
We were invited out by the Daiichi Art Museum to go check out their Ukiyo-e Exhibit. Ukiyo-e could really be considered the grandfather of manga because without this medium, which often described the liveliness of Japanese culture, we have never gotten many of the beloved Manga and anime that we love today. We decided to check out some of the other sightseeing places in the area! We visited a local monthly market for local people called Kunoichi Market. There were also quite a few interesting temples and shrines.
Finally, we got to check out the home of some of the largest fried shrimp that I have ever SEEN!
If you enjoy the video be sure to gently press that like button, and ring that notification bell!

Shirahama, a well-known onsen (hot spring) resort in Wakayama Prefecture, has a lot to offer its visitors. Being one of the “top three” onsen resorts (the other two famous onsen resorts are Atami on the Izu Peninsula and Beppu in Kyushu), Shirahama attracts many visitors. Being only 100 kilometers south of Osaka, it is safe to say many of its visitors are from Osaka.
But onsen (hot spring) is not the only thing Shirahama has to offer. The name Shirahama literally means “white beach”. This is due to the 500 meter long sandy, white-white sand beach. With the hotels located a few feet from the beach, visitors can enjoy the easy access to the warm waters on the white sand. In the summer time, there are nightly fireworks.
In addition to water related attractions, Shirahama has a cultural side as well. Visitors interested in Japanese art are strongly recommended to visit the Kishu Museum. The museum displays collections of Japanese art works such as ceramics and ukiyo-e (woodblock prints). Works by the famous ukiyo-e artists Eishousai Chouki as well as Andou Hiroshige can be seen here. Tea ceremony articles as well as pottery and porcelain from the Edo Period are also displayed at this museum.

Japan Travel: Hokusai and a Small, Quaint Town, at the Hokusai Museum, Obuse, Japan, Nagano Prefecture 041
The Hokusai Museum, located in the quaint town of Obuse in Nagano Prefecture, displays the works of world famous ukiyo-e artist, Katsushika Hokusai. Best known for his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji ukiyo-e wood block series, Hokusai’s collection in Obuse reflects his connection with this small town.
Hokusai spent his twilight years in Obuse, under the invitation of Takai Kozan, a wealthy merchant. Kozan’s desire to bring culture to Obuse led him to invite Hokusai to his town. Hokusai added his touches to the town through the countless brushwork paintings he produced during his stay. In addition, Hokusai painted his signature waves, dragon and phoenix on the ceiling of two floats, used in the town’s festival. These works of art, including the floats are displayed at the Hokusai Museum. The museum has English descriptions as well as a short English video about the artist.

Matsumoto Museum of Art - Quick Review
The Matsumoto Museum of Art has beautiful exhibits, great atmosphere, and is very easy to get to from downtown Matsumoto. Since many of the permanent exhibits are for people from or associated with Matsumoto, it’s a great place to get a feel for the city’s character. This museum might only take a couple of hours to go through, but I recommend making a little extra time to relax in the museum’s plaza. It’s also only a 10 minute walk to Agatanomori Park from the museum, so it’s a great idea to visit them back-to-back.
Highlights:
- Yayoi Kusama’s interior and exterior exhibits alone are worth the trip.
- I found Tamura Kazuo’s multi-frame landscapes captivating.
- There’s an area in Kamijo Shinzan’s exhibit where you can make your own calligraphy prints.
You can find more information about the museum here:

HOKUSAI 北斎 at NGV
Hokusai features 176 works from the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum, Matsumoto, and the NGV Collection that encompass the artist’s remarkable seventy-year career.
Katsushika Hokusai is regarded as one of the most influential and creative minds in the history of Japanese art. His unique social observations, innovative approach to design and mastery of the brush made him famous in Edo-period Japan and globally recognised within a decade of his death.
For the first time in Australia, seven of Hokusai’s major series, including Thirty-six Views of Mt Fuji, 1830–34; A Tour to the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, c. 1832; Remarkable Views of Bridges in Various Provinces, c. 1834; Eight Views of the Ryūkyū Islands; and One Hundred Ghost Stories, c. 1831, are on display, as well as selected works representing his great passion for the classical subjects of birds and flowers and historical poetry. A selection of rare prints and paintings that show the stylistic and thematic changes of Hokusai’s formative years, as well as three sets of illustrated books that highlight the artist’s masterful and compositionally innovative book illustrations, including the complete set of fifteen volumes of Hokusai Manga, compete this comprehensive insight into the life and times of this major figure.
Traditional Japanese woodblock printing is revived
SHOTLIST
Matsumoto, Kyoto - January, 2008
1. Close of print 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' by Hokusai (1830)
2. Various close of print by Hiro Shige showing a woman in a Kimono by the Sumida river (1847-52)
3. Wide of print showing three women
4. Close of print showing man's face
5. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sakai Nobuo, curator, Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto
Rather than a single individual, they were made by a group of people and this is unlike other art forms. Oil paintings, traditional Japanese and Chinese water colors, for example, are painted by a single artist, but with ukiyo-e (block printing) the process is more complex.
6. Various of Takenaka Kenji at work
7. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Takenaka Kenji, woodblock printer
This is the famous work by Hokusai called the 'Great Wave'. It depicts a rough sea off the coast of Kanagawa from a view point where it was possible to see Mt Fuji. Hokusai would first draw an out line which would then be placed directly onto a woodblock which an engraver would then use as a guide. The original picture would of course be destroyed in the process. The final result of the engraver's work would be a printing block like this.
8. Various of blue water based paint being brushed onto wood
9. Various of print being applied to paper
10. Various of print without colours
11. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) Sakai Nobuo, curator Japan Ukiyo-e Museum in Matsumoto
The out line would be carved alone by a master engraver. This is the most difficult part of the engraving process, but once completed the blocks used to print the colour could be produced quite easily by apprentices. A printer would normally work alone.
12. Mid of Takenaka Kenji at work
