Museum in Nagano Prefecture Houses Paintings from Hokusai’s Late Years | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), Japan’s world-renowned woodblock artist, also produced masterful brush paintings. A number of these works now form the core of the collection at the Hokusai Museum (Hokusai-Kan) in Obuse, a small town in Nagano Prefecture. When he was in his eighties, Hokusai made four visits to Obuse at the invitation of Takai Kōzan, a local magnate, and devoted himself to painting. At Kōzan’s request, he painted festival floats for two local districts, Higashimachi and Kanmachi. Particularly striking are the images of a dragon and a phoenix that he painted on the ceiling of the Higashimachi float. Both paintings rank among the masterpieces of Hokusai’s final years. The two floats—Hokusai’s only three-dimensional works—are on permanent display at the museum.

Japan Trip: Remembering Peace at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima 02 Moopon
Japan Trip: Remembering Peace at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima 02 Moopon
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (広島平和記念公園 ), located in downtown Hiroshima, is the site of where the first atomic bomb was dropped at 8:15 am on August 6, 1945. The park is dedicated to the victims of the atomic bomb. The park promotes peace while reiterating the horrors of nuclear war.
Within this spacious park visitors will find many structures reflecting peace. On Peace Boulevard, behind the fountain is the Peace Memorial Museum. Here visitors can witness and learn about Hiroshima’s history and struggle after the attack.
Visitors will see an arched structure, the Memorial Cenotaph, located in the middle of the park. The names of all of the victims of the bomb are written here with the inscription “Let all the souls here rest in peace for we shall not repeat the evil. The structure was constructed on August 6, 1952, with the arch shape reflecting the souls of the victims.
The Peace Flame behind the Cenotaph has been continuously lit since 1964. With a prayer of internal peace, the flame will remain lit until all nuclear weapons have been destroyed and the world is free from the threat of a nuclear war.
Hiroshima Memorial, or commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome, lies at the end of park, near the streetcar street (Aioi Street). Known as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall at the time, this is the only remaining building near the bomb’s epicenter. Though there was some controversy whether the building should be torn down or preserved, it was decided the Atomic Bomb Dome is an important part of local as well as world history. Though the Dome has been reconstructed a few times, the original architecture was always been preserved in remembrance of the victims.
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the site of the annual Peace Memorial Ceremony held on August 6. There are peace exhibits throughout the park as well as narratives from the survivors of the atomic bomb, storytelling activities for children. Near the Peace Memorial Museum, visitors can find information about experiences translated in English.
On that day, i the evening, paper lanterns illuminated by candles are floated down the river next to the park. For a nominal fee, visitors can create their own paper lantern, with their own message of peace, to be floated down the river. Once the lantern is created, the volunteers will assemble the lantern and assist visitors in floating the lantern. Please be aware, as many people wish to participate in this tradition, there is usually a long line to float the lantern. Whether involved in the creation or not, all visitors to the park can view the paper lanterns floating down the river, the candlelight illuminating the black water.

The Painstaking Process of Making Gold Leaf: Kanazawa Artisans Display Their Specialized Skills
Making gold leaf is the signature handicraft of Kanazawa. Pieces of a specially prepared gold alloy are passed through rollers that press them to a thickness of about 0.01 millimeters. The sheets of gold foil are placed between pieces of paper and stacked, and the stack is pounded to spread them and make them even thinner. The sheets are meticulously transferred to another stack of paper and pounded again. This process is repeated thousands of times, until the sheets have been thinned to 0.001 mm. Further pounding reduces the thickness to 0.0001, at which point the sheets are finally ready to be used as gold leaf. This material is so light that it is blown away by the smallest breath of air. Skilled workers handle it with a set of traditional bamboo implements. The final step is to cut it into squares of various sizes and mount it on sheets of mat board. From start to finish the process relies on the work of artisans specializing in particular tasks.

Emergency shelters made from paper: Shigeru Ban at TEDxTokyo
Shigeru Ban
Eco-Architect and Three-Dimensional Poet
Shigeru Ban's practical philosophy of architecture involves nothing less than redefining aesthetics, space, materials and structure. His unusual modular shelter design using recycled paper and cardboard shipping tubes, for example, provided evacuees with sturdy havens after the Great East Japan Earthquake. Shigeru graduated from Cooper Union's Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, worked at Arata Isozaki's atelier, and in 1985 founded Shigeru Ban Architects. His notable works include Curtain Wall House, the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany, and the Centre Pompidou-Metz museum of modern and contemporary arts in France. Shigeru has received a wealth of awards, including the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize, Auguste Perret Prize, and the Ministry of Education's Award for Fine Arts. Currently on the faculty at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, he has also taught at Harvard, Cornell and Keio University.

Yamanashi Prefecture (English)
Promotion video of the beauty of Yamanashi prefecture - Japan.
This video is copyrighted, please contact us if you want to use this video.
Yamanashi prefecture is located near the center of Honshu, the main island of Japan. It has an area of 1,723.8 mi2 and a population of 890,000. Surrounded by 6,560-9,840 ft high mountains and rich in nature, 78% of the prefecture is covered by forests--including those of its three national parks and one quasi-national park, such as the famous Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.
Kofu city, the capital of Yamanashi, is located in a geographically important area, connecting the industrial areas of the Pacific Ocean and the Japan Sea coasts. Kofu continues to develop as a political, economic and cultural center, especially thanks to the completion of the Chuo Expressway, which offers easy access to the national capital, Tokyo. Yamanashi is well noted as an inland industrial prefecture with both advanced technological and traditional industries.
Among the various products of Yamanashi, the fruits grown in its favorable environment are some of the most famous. Its harvest of grapes, peaches and plums is ranked as the best and most beautiful in Japan, and the wines made of Koshu grapes are well known all over the world. In addition, kaiki (traditional weaving of silk textiles), crystal crafting, and the production of washi, or Japanese paper, are all very popular. Techniques refined in Yamanashi for cutting precious stones are among the most advanced in the world, as well.
Mountain climbing and hot springs are among the most popular forms of recreation in Yamanashi. The many hot springs in the area offer health benefits and relaxation. The largest spring in the prefecture, located in Isawa, is only one and a half hours from Tokyo.
Mt. Fuji and the five lakes for its breathtaking scenery, the southern alps for its serious mountain climbing, the Chichibu-Tama area for hiking and beautiful ravines, and the Yatsugatake highland area for pastoral surroundings--these are the gateways where many people find their chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. After hiking, tennis, field athletics, or fishing, why not try one of our delicious local specialties? Hoto made of thick noodles and vegetables in a rich miso soup will warm you up on even the coldest winter day.
Yamanashi is an inland prefecture, holding no ocean coast. People in this area have learned to overcome the severe elements of inland climate over a long period of time. This is said to have built a character of patience and endurance in the populace. You will find people warmhearted, caring and conscientious.

Cyoko Tamai - 2014 Japan Society Summer Artist Residency
Reviving the legacy of Japan Society Gallery's Artist Residency program of the 1950s and 1960s, which gave international opportunities to such visionary talents as Shikō Munakata and Yayoi Kusama, the Gallery continues to act as the major springboard for newly emerging talents from Japan.
For the 2014 residency program taking place during July, we have selected Cyoko Tamai (b. 1987, Kōchi Prefecture; lives and works in Tokyo), who brings out the expressive potentials of the medium of ink on paper painting. Tamai skillfully treads the space between the apparent fragility of paper and the core strength of its material nature, accentuated by the subtlety of ink.
Come by the Open Studio on Saturday, July 19th to meet the artist and view some of her works.
Born in 1987 in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, Cyoko Tamai received BFA in Music (2011) and MFA in Japanese Painting (2014) from Tokyo University of the Arts. In her work, she pursues the finest lines that are the smallest unit of painting, using a steel dip pen rather than a paintbrush or ink brush conventionally used in Japanese painting. She considers her painting process staining of the thin fibers that comprise a sheet of paper. With the thin nib of her pen, Tamai pulls out fibers after fibers from the sheet of paper, literally deconstructing the painting surface to create an approximately two-inch-high, fuzzed relief that appears to defy gravity.
About Cyoko Tamai
Tamai's work has been included in the 2009 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata Prefecture even before she received BFA. Since then her work has been presented in various solo and group exhibitions in Japan, including: Cyoko TAMAI Exhibition, Ginza Surugadai Gallery, Tokyo (2014); What is Drawing--a show of competition winners, Galerie Simon, Tokyo (2012); Young Artists, Daimaru Kochi, Tokyo (2013); Next Art, Matsuya Ginza, Tokyo (2013); ShinPA!!!!!!!, Obuse Museum of Art, Nagano Prefecture and Sato Museum of Art, Tokyo (2013). Tamai is a recipient of a grant from the Sato International Cultural Foundation in Tokyo (2013) and the Ataka Awards from Tokyo University of the Arts (2013).
