Hôtel de Sully in Paris France
Hôtel de Sully is a private mansion located in the Le Marais neighborhood in Paris France.
The Marais literally means 'marsh' and that is exactly what this Parisian neighborhood was 1,000 years ago, writes Abby Gordon, an American expat and freelance writer based in Paris.
Before the area was drained into a fertile marshland, it was a swamp, and unfortunately the swamp-like odors remained centuries after the transformation. Narrow cobblestoned streets, exposed stone and beamed-buildings and slanted walls and rooflines are prevalent, a testament to the Marais's medieval history.
Today, the Marais is one of Paris's most trendy and desirable neighborhoods. It is the hub of the gay community in Paris. The Marais is also home to so many restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, many of which stay open on Sundays, an unusual phenomenon in France. Despite this modernization, the Marais still retains so much of the medieval character that was bulldozed in the 19th and 20th centuries for bigger and better structures in other parts of the City of Light—but not the medieval smell. Thankfully, the most prevalent smell these days emanates from the numerous seductive boulangeries (bakeries) and pâtisseries (pastry shops).

A Walk Around Hôtel de Sully, Le Marais, Paris
The Hôtel de Sully is a Louis XIII style hôtel particulier, or private mansion, located at 62 rue Saint-Antoine in the Marais, IV arrondissement, Paris. Built at the beginning of the 17th century, it is nowadays the seat of the Centre des monuments nationaux, the French national organization responsible for national heritage sites. It has been listed since 1862 as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
The hôtel de Sully was built, with gardens and an orangery, between 1624 and 1630, for the wealthy financier Mesme Gallet. The building is usually attributed to the architect Jean Androuet du Cerceau. The site was chosen to give access to the Place Royale - today the Place des Vosges. The Marais was then an especially fashionable area for the high nobility ; the construction of the hôtel de Sully fits in a larger movement of monumental building in this part of Paris.
Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, and former Superintendent of Finances to King Henri IV, purchased the hôtel, completed and fully furnished, on 23 February 1634. He completed the redecoration of the building, and spent his last years living there. His grandson Maximilien commissioned architects, most probably Simon Lambert and François Le Vau, to build an additional wing in 1660, to the west of the garden. The hôtel de Sully still bears the name of this family, who owned the building into the 18th century.
The hôtel then passed through the hands of various owners, becoming an investment property in the 19th century. Various additions and alterations were made, to accommodate trades, craftsmen and other tenants. In 1862 it was classified as a monument historique, and new owners, more concerned with conservation, gradually restored the building. It became a state-owned property in 1944. A long restoration programme was then undertaken, which was completed with the repair of the orangery in 1973.
Since 1967 it has been the home of the Caisse nationale des monuments historiques et des sites, which in 2000 became the Centre des monuments nationaux. This public body, under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, is responsible for the management of historic buildings and monuments in state care.

Robbie rencontre My Hanh

The hôtel was built to serve as a residence for the archbishops of Sens. Before 1622, Paris was not a specific archdiocese, and depended on the diocesan authority of Sens. The archbishop was a prominent figure of power, his residence reflecting his influence within the urban landscape.
A first hôtel, at this location, was built for the archbishops of Sens in 1345, which was latter used by Charles V, King of France, as a part of his royal residence, the hôtel Saint-Pol. When the Kings settled in the newly built Louvre palace, the building was destroyed, only to be replaced by the current hôtel, built between 1475 and 1519 by Tristian de Salazar and reinstalled as the residence of the archbishops of Sens. As such, it served as the house of many renowned prelate, such as Antoine Duprat, Louis de Bourbon de Vendôme, Louis de Lorraine, Nicolas de Pellevé (who died in the hôtel) or Jacques Davy Duperron. Margaret of Valois also lived there in 1605 and 1606, and her decision to cut a fig tree (figuier) in front of the building is said to have inspired the name of the street, rue du Figuier.
The 1830 cannonball lodged in the main facade.
In 1622, Paris became an archdiocese. The archbishops of Sens lost the major part of their power in the city, and their sojourns in Paris became progressively less frequent. The hôtel, alienated during the 17th century to the archdiocese of Paris, entered a lasting period of progressive decay. A bien national during the French Revolution, it was sold in 1797 and privately owned throughout the 19th century, housing, like many hôtels particulier in the Marais at the time, shops, workshops or factories. During the Trois Glorieuses street fights of 1830, a cannonball hit the facade and lodged deep within the wall ; it is visible nowadays above the main entrance, the date engraved beneath.
Protected as a heritage site in 1862, the building was acquired by the city of Paris, and thoroughly restored in 1930. The Forney art library was installed in it in 1961. With a lovely garden open to the public.

I'd forgotten this was even here. We entered from the arcades at Place des Vosges, went through the formal garden, then passed through a passageway and into this impressive courtyard. The scaffolding is in connection with major renovations, inside and out.
Le Marais is an area of Central Paris not to be missed. One way to get there is to take the 1 métro to the Saint-Paul stop. Le Marais (The Swamp) is rather large, so a street map is adviseable. It is full of museums, many of which are free, parks and squares, some of the oldest and most varied architecture in Paris, galleries, passages, art, music, rather posh shopping, the Shoah Memorial, restaurants of all types, a hammam, music, artists, Jews, gays, tourists, booksellers (such as MONA LISAIT) and bookstalls on the River Seine, and more! The Carnavalet Museum, in two huge châteux, is free and has something for EVERYONE. We went to the Cognack-Jay Museum (free) this day, and enjoyed also seeing L'Hötel Donon, the 16th century hôtel particulier (mansion) which houses the collection.
I think everyone loves Le Marais. Kids, too!
