ROAD TRIP POLAND: Wroclaw, Jawor and Swidnica
We crossed into Poland from Prague on 11.08.2019.
We came to South West Poland with the intention of seeing two UNESCO world heritage listed churches, and to see Wroclaw, an UNESCO world heritage listed town.
They did not disappointed.
We took a taxi earlier in the morning to the closest Enterprise Cars office at Wroclaw airport.
We were so surprised to see a brand new airport.
It turns out Poland has invested PLN 5 billion in infastructure. It is largely driven by EU funds. The road infastructure development continues, but the progress in modernizing the railway network has been slower.
The economy has expanded by 37% in the decade leading up to 2018. 2018 was the 27th consecutive year of GDP expansion.
In 2017, GDP per capita reached 70% of the EU average, up from 50% in 2008.
It turns out Poland is a success story since the falling of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
However, we did notice differences between regions, between South and North. Larger cities are doing well, but smaller cities and rural areas are struggling with the outflow of young skilled people. Over 2.3m or 6% have left the country, mainly to UK, Germany and Ireland.
Despite these changes and improvements it is still a Second world country.
Poland was invaded on 01.09.1939. It was the first country invaded. I talk about this further in some of other vlogs.
This trip has been such an eye opener for us and a lesson in history.
Wroclaw is one of the oldest cities in Poland.
Prior to 1945, this region was part of Germany. After the Potsdam Agreement in August 1945, it was returned to Poland.
I am surprised these churches survived WWII and communism.
In 1655 the Lutherans were allowed to build three churches from wood, clay and straw without church bells. All to be built within one year.
Two churches survived today in Jawor and in Swidnica.
The third church of Glagow burned down in 1758.
These three churches became the biggest timber framed religious buildings in Europe.
The church in Jawor, dedicated to the Holy Ghost.
The church in Swidnica is dedicated to the Holy Trinity.
Both were restored by a Polish-German cooperation and recognized by UNESCO in 2001.

Churches of Peace in Jawor and Swidnica - UNESCO World Heritage Site
These two UNESCO World Heritage site Churches of Peace are fascinating buildings. The largest timber-framed religious buildings in Europe, they are Protestant churches in predominantly Catholic areas, and were built under very strict conditions. The buildings must be entirely wooden, no stones or bricks, no towers, more than a gunshot from the city walls, completed within a year and to a different design than existing churches. Very impressive that all of these conditions were satisfied, and that the churches have now stood for 350 years!

１７世紀打了30年的宗教戰爭，戰敗的新教徒被限制，只能用易腐的木材跟泥土建材，建造沒有鐘樓與尖塔的教堂。
因為這樣的限制，才能造就現今這個，跟傳統天主教教堂，迴然不同風格又特殊景觀的歐洲最大木構教堂！

Czaty Zamkowe to Bolkowski festiwal poezji twórczości Jacka Kaczmarskiego. Przez dziewięć lat wydarzenie wyrobiło sobie doskonałą markę i z roku na rok przyciąga wielu uczestników. Z czasem na scenie zaczęli się prezentować artyści zza granicy, oprócz twórczości barda dzielą się także autorskimi wykonaniami. Miejscem, gdzie powstał pomysł na czaty jest Wrocławski Salon Jacka Kaczmarskiego.

BOLKÓW. Uroczyste otwarcie zrewitalizowanego rynku
To nie była zwykła rewitalizacja. Bolkowski rynek zyskał nie tylko nowy blask, ale też przeszedł kompleksowy remont. Wymianie nawierzchni, budowy miejsc parkingowych towarzyszyły prace ziemne – wymiana kanalizacji, instalacji gazowej i wodnej. Całość projektu zamknęła się w kwocie 10,5 mln zł, z czego dofinansowanie z rządowego programu operacyjnego dla Dolnego Śląska wyniosło ponad 7 mln. Podczas uroczystego otwarcia (17.01.2020) zamiast przecięcia wstęgi, był spacer po starówce.
