Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization.
Bodhi Tree Temple (The Sri Maha Bodhiya), is the second most sacred place in Sri Lanka, after the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Tooth, in Kandy. The Bodhi Tree is allegedly a cutting from the original Bodhi tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment, and has been continuously guarded for over 2000 years, making it the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. The temple complex is surrounded by walls, and is quite busy with monks and worshipers.

В старом городе Анурадхапуры и в окрестностях сохранились многочисленные памятники древности (внесены в список всемирного культурного наследия ЮНЕСКО) — колоколообразные ступы (дагобы) Тхупарама (III век до н. э.), Руанвели (II—I век до н. э.) с каменными статуями Будды; скальный монастырь Исурумуния, дворцы, искусственные водоёмы. Все эти достопримечательности находятся в старом городе, откуда в 1950 году все жители были перселены в новый город.

Местом паломничества буддистов является дерево Махабодхи ( Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi) и храм Махабодхи вокруг него. Выращенное из ветви священного дерева Бодхи, находившегося в индийском городе Бодх-Гая, под которым, согласно легенде, Будда нашёл просветление, дерево Махабодхи является древнейшим из существующих деревьев с документированной историей. Позднее священное дерево Махабодхи в Бодх-гая несколько раз погибало, но на его месте высаживалось новое дерево из семени дерева Махабодхи в Анурадхапуре.
В XIX веке основной ствол дерева Махабодхи в Анурадхапуре был вырублен английским фанатиком, однако остался малый ствол, который сейчас почитается и придерживается золотыми подпорками.
Вокруг дерева Махабодхи находится охраняемая археологическая зона (территория старого города), в которой находятся многочисленные ступы и остатки памятников древности с IV века до н. э., в частности, буддийских монастырей. Имеется также археологический музей, в котором собраны наиболее ценные скульптуры.

ATTACK AT THE SRI MAHA BODHIYA new
The LTTE hijacked a bus May 14, 1985 and entered Anuradhapura. As the LTTE cadres entered the main bus station, they opened fire indiscriminately with automatic weapons killing and wounding many civilians who were waiting for buses.[1] LTTE cadres then drove to the Buddhist Sri Maha Bodhi shrine and gunned down nuns, monks and civilians as they were worshipping inside the Buddhist shrine.[2] Before they withdrew, the LTTE strike force entered the national park of Wilpattu and killed 18 Sinhalese in the forest reserve. The LTTE cadres massacred 146 Sinhalese men, women and children in Anuradhapura.
