Our First Full Day In NOLA and Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour (August 24, 2012)
Watch in high quality (480p). This was our Day 2 of our big family vacation here. We went around NOLA and also to the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour!
So in this video, it shows our first morning here in Kenner, LA with a beautiful sunrise. Then we rode a shuttle bus later in the morning to take us to Downtown NOLA so we can get our tickets for our Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour. We got the ticket around the Riverwalk Market by the Mississippi River where the ferry was. We also ate a bit of lunch at Poppy's Time Out.
Then by around the 12 o'clock hour, we finally went on the shuttle bus that took us to the swamps. But first we had a mini tour around the Mardi Gras World by the Mississippi River. Then just passed 12:45 p.m., we crossed the CCC bridge, or the Crescent City Connection bridge, crossing over the Mississippi River and seeing the southern areas of New Orleans to the right. We later saw a nice distant view of NOLA and the CCC bridge...and then the rain started to pour.
As we neared the swamp, at the Jean Lafitte National Park Swamp areas, the rain started pouring like there's no tomorrow! Luckily when we arrived to the actual tour spot, the rains lighted up a bit but then we heard quite a few nearby thunder and the rains began to fall but not as bad.
We started our tour around 2 p.m. We saw quite a few alligators of the duration of our tour. The tour guide also talked and shows us the different topography, land and exotic plantlife found in and around the canal banks/bayou. A few of the alligators actually swamp right by our boat! We also saw a couple shacks on the right side of the Bayou Anx. A few movies were actually filmed here. We also saw Spanish moss and some damage left by Hurricane Katrina.
When we got to the end of the bayou, where thick floating plants finally covered all the water, we stopped and then the tour guide showed us a couple of relics including a snapping turtle shell, and a fairly large alligator head! And then he also showed us a 2-month old baby alligator. The rains also began to start as a thunderstorm quickly drifts over our area. We got to hold the alligator as well!
As we headed back the rains poured super heavily! Put it another way, it doesn't rain that hard that often back in California! We also heard some thunder as well and then it also got a bit breezy so all of us sort of drifted inward of the boat to prevent getting wet in the front. The tour suppose to be like 2 hours but was cut short due to poor weather conditions.
We finally got back on the shuttle bus and left the park. Boy, it was pouring still! The rains lifted once we neared NOLA. We caught traffic as we neared the busyness of New Orleans once again. We saw a nice view of Downtown NOLA with the Mississippi River on the CCC.
Coming late afternoon, we went to the Riverwalk, went on a streetcar, and headed to the French Quarter/Jackson Square for more walking around and exploring. This was our last time visiting the area. We ate the famous French Beignets at the Cafe Du Monde. We did last minute souvenir shopping along the Decatur St. Coming nightfall, we caught a taxi van and left NOLA. By the way, we bought our dinner of alligator sausage from the Poppy's Time Out to eat back at the hotel in Kenner, LA.
What a fun-filled adventure we had at the swamps and around NOLA this day!

The Louisiana Pirate, Jean Lafitte | Louisiana French
Louisiana Swamp Tour Video
Our New Orleans swamp tours operate from the dock in Marrero (Crown Point) Louisiana, located just a 35 minute drive from the French Quarter of New Orleans.
We are situated on the banks of Bayou Barataria, in the heart of the most dynamic ecosystem of North America. The Treasure Isle Swamps that surround our boat dock are part of the “Barataria Estuary”. The word, Barataria, means “The Good Land”. We are quite isolated, where there is but one road in and the same road out and are adjacent to the Largest Urban Park in the United States, “The Jean Lafitte National Park & Preserve”.
The wetlands of the Barataria swamps are so rich in seafood and wildlife, that when Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, he was only interested in New Orleans and it’s Swamps. Thomas Jefferson considered Barataria Estuary, the crown jewel of the purchase.

Barataria Preserve - Trails in Louisiana Near New Orleans
First off I want to apologize for the quality of this video. I was trying a new app for my iPhone and the stabilization was not working. I tried fixing in editing but it makes the video look weird.
Jean Lafitte National Park is the only National Park in Louisiana and is located in Marrero, La just outside of New Orleans. It is also a National Parks Historic site with a visitor center that has more info on the history of this area.
I include most of the trails in this system except the Twin Canal trail (.6 miles) and the Palmetto trail (.9 miles) Enjoy and thanks for watching!
