Hi, I'm Heather Dudley Nollette and I'm the great great great grand-daughter of Lucinda and Loren Hastings, who built this beautiful building in Port Townsend, WA in 1889.
The Hastings Building is still owned by the original family and we're seeking to complete a full historic rehabilitation on the building in the near future.
This building is one of only a few remaining structures designed by the architect, Elmer H. Fisher. In retrospect, Fisher is well-known for designing grand architectural features -- like this full-length glass atrium -- features that were perhaps too advanced for the engineering technology of the day.
The atrium here in the Hastings Building cracked under snow-pack sometime around the 1930's, and we're hoping to restore it, in addition to many of the other features like the conical cupola on the top of the building, when we complete the rehabilitation.
My brother and my cousins and I grew up visiting Port Townsend and running around playing hide and seek in this building. But most of the people in Jefferson County, including many who've lived in our community their whole lives, have never been inside the upper floors of this building.
My grandmother, Jean Dudley along with Mary Johnson, did use the upper floors of the Hastings Building to begin the Port Townsend Summer School of the Arts in the 1960's. And there are still people today who do remember taking classes from Jean and Mary in the building. They are so excited about the possibility of rehabilitating this building and bringing it back to the community
The Hastings Building is a pivotal historic structure in Port Townsend's downtown historic district. The Port Townsend Main Street Program has facilitated so much work over the last 26 years to ensure the historic preservation and economic vitality of our commercial historic districts ... while maintaining our small town quality of life. Winning this National Trust Challenge would help our community to develop historic preservation and economic development resources like an Online Interactive Building and Business Inventory, which would help us to preserve and promote the buildings and businesses in our commercial historic districts.
Historic places like the Hastings Building do matter to people -- they represent a connection to our past and an opportunity to come together today to steward our community resources into the future.

Long Island
Long Island is an island in the U.S. state of New York. Stretching northeast from New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean, the island comprises four counties, including two (Kings and Queens) that form the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, and two (Nassau and Suffolk) that are farther out on the island and mainly suburban. Although all four counties are part of the greater New York metropolitan area, the name Long Island is often reserved in popular usage for only Nassau and Suffolk counties, as distinct from those lying within New York City proper. North of the island is Long Island Sound, across which are the states of Connecticut and Rhode Island.
With a Census-estimated population of 7,740,208 in 2013, Long Island is the most populated island in any U.S. state or territory, and the 17th-most populous island in the world (ahead of Ireland, Jamaica, and Hokkaidō). Its population density is 5,402 inhabitants per square mile (2,086 /km2). If it were a U.S. state, Long Island would rank 13th in population (after Virginia) and first in population density.

David Douglas and the Landscape of the Pacific Northwest - 11/9/12
Author Jack Nisbet presented David Douglas and the Landscape of the Pacific Northwest as part of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 9 in CF 125 on the Western campus.
Between 1825-33, Scottish naturalist David Douglas traveled with Hudson's Bay Company fur men throughout their Columbia and New Caledonia Districts, actively interacting with the flora, fauna, and families that lived there. This slide presentation will focus on what ideas Douglas's journals, letters, scientific specimens, taxonomy, artwork, and oral legacy can offer to understanding the place where we live today.
Spokane-based teacher and writer Jack Nisbet's books include Visible Bones, Purple Flat Top, Sources of the River, and The Mapmaker's Eye. The Collector, his biography of David Douglas, was named as one of the Pacific Northwest Bookseller's Association's 2010 Books of the Year. His latest title, David Douglas: A Naturalist at Work, is an illustrated collection of essays that both provide context for Douglas's journeys and relate his work to the modern landscape. It serves as the companion book for a museum exhibit of the same name that is now open at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane.
The exhibit will travel to the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma in Fall 2013.
The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of the WWU and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.

The Confederate States of America (CSA or C.S.), commonly referred to as the Confederacy and the South, was an unrecognized country in North America that existed from 1861 to 1865. The Confederacy was originally formed by seven secessionist slave-holding states—South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas—in the Lower South region of the United States, whose economy was heavily dependent upon agriculture, particularly cotton, and a plantation system that relied upon the labor of African-American slaves.Each state declared its secession from the United States, which became known as the Union during the ensuing civil war, following the November 1860 election of Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. presidency on a platform which opposed the expansion of slavery into the western territories. Before Lincoln took office in March, a new Confederate government was established in February 1861, which was considered illegal by the government of the United States. States volunteered militia units and the new government hastened to form its own Confederate States Army from scratch practically overnight. After the American Civil War began in April, four slave states of the Upper South—Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina—also declared their secession and joined the Confederacy. The Confederacy later accepted Missouri and Kentucky as members, although neither officially declared secession nor were they ever largely controlled by Confederate forces; Confederate shadow governments attempted to control the two states but were later exiled from them.
The government of the United States (the Union) rejected the claims of secession and considered the Confederacy illegally founded. The War began with the Confederate attack upon Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, a Union fort in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. No foreign government officially recognized the Confederacy as an independent country, although Great Britain and France granted it belligerent status, which allowed Confederate agents to contract with private concerns for arms and other supplies. In early 1865, after four years of heavy fighting which led to 620,000–850,000 military deaths, all the Confederate forces surrendered and the Confederacy vanished. The war lacked a formal end; nearly all Confederate forces had been forced into surrender or deliberately disbanded by the end of 1865, by which point the dwindling manpower and resources of the Confederacy were facing overwhelming odds. By 1865, Jefferson Davis lamented that the Confederacy had disappeared.
