Welcome to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Jeju!
The island is 73km wide and 31km long with a total area of 1,848.85㎢. Jeju, the largest island in South Korea, came into existence 700 to 1,200 thousand years ago when lava spewed from a sub-sea volcano and surfaced above the waters. Then 100 to 300 thousand years ago, another volcanic eruption formed Mt. Halla. The final volcanic eruption that took place approximately 25 thousand years ago created the crater lake, Baekrok-dam, at the summit of the mountain.

Jeju submits caves and lava tubes for Unesco World Natural Heritage list
제주 동굴•화산지형 세계자연유산 추가 등재 추진
More caves and lava tubes on Korea's Jeju Island could be added to the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage sites.
The Jeju World Natural Heritage Center said on Tuesday it has selected five candidates for world natural heritage sites in recognition of their scenic value and unique landforms.
The list contains three caves and two lava tubes -- the Socheon Lava Tube and Geomun Oreum Utsanjeon... Tubes.
The Jeju center was advised by Unesco and the International Union for Conservation of Nature to try and list the additional caves and volcanic tubes after the southernmost island's Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes were listed as a World Natural Heritage site in 2007.
The final selection is expected to take place in October.

Jeju Island is an island in the Jeju Province of South Korea. The island lies in the Korea Strait, below the Korean Peninsula, south of the South Jeolla Province. The island contains the natural world heritage site, Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes.
I was invited to visit Jeju Island by the Jeju World Natural Heritage Center to experience the beauty of Jeju Island. I stayed on the island for 8 days and was mesmerized by it's beauty.
So, here I am am sharing my stories...
FAQ :
*Which airline to take from Manila to Jeju? - Oddly, it was difficult to find a direct flight from Manila going to Jeju Island. I took Cathay Pacific and had to transfer flight at HongKong airport. The fare was around Php 25,000.
*Do you need visa to go to Jeju Island? - If you will take a plane that will land at Incheon Airport, you will need to acquire a visa. But if you can find a way to land directly on Jeju Island, visa is not needed.
*You mentioned you were questioned at the Jeju Immigration, what happened? - I will share MORE about this on the next vlogs!
*How much money do you need to go to Jeju Island? -If you are wise enough and don't need luxurious stuff, around Php 40,000 would be enough.

Jeju Island’s Haenyeo
[Anchor Lead]
The woman divers known as haenyeo are a symbol of Jeju Island. The haenyeo will likely be added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list soon. Here’s more.
[Pkg]
Making their livelihoods in the ocean waters, female divers called haenyo are a symbol of Jeju Island. Since 2011, the Jeju government and the Cultural Heritage Administration have been working to have haenyo added to UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list. The efforts of the past several years will at last bear fruit. UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has recommended that Jeju'shaenyo be registered as a leading intangible cultural heritage item. Ahead of the 11th inter-government committee meeting slated for late November in Ethiopia, the UNESCO committee appraised whether to add Jejuhaenyo to the intangible heritage list, and recognized the value of the culture's unique community spirit.
[Soundbite] Chung Eun-sun(World heritage team, Cultural Heritage Administration) : We believe it is highly likely that the registrationwill be realized if there is no objection at the final stage, given that the UNESCO appraiser has made a recommendation.
Japan did not apply to have its rival female divers called ama added to the UNESCO list. There are approximately 340 UNESCO intangible cultural heritage items around the world. South Korea has 18 items on the UNESCO list, including the JongmyoJeryeak, court music for a royal ancestral ceremony.

Mystical Wonder of Jeju-do Island
Jeju-do Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage, is filled with environmental assets recognized not only in Korea but also worldwide. A mystical tale of the island’s birth told for generations tells of a giant named Seolmundae Halmang. She carried sand with her skirt and built in the middle of the sea an island called Jeju. The pile of sand she made became Hallasan Mountain, while the lumps of earth that fell through her torn skirt became volcanic cones.
