Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Princes Street
Places to see in ( Edinburgh - UK ) Princes Street
Princes Street is one of the major thoroughfares in central Edinburgh, Scotland, and its main shopping street. Princes Street is the southernmost street of Edinburgh's New Town, stretching around 1 mile from Lothian Road in the west to Leith Street in the east.
Princes Street is mostly closed to private cars, with public transport given priority. The street has virtually no buildings on the south side, allowing panoramic views of the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, and the valley between. Only the east end of the street is open to all traffic. The bulk of the street is limited to trams, buses and taxis.
Princes Street was originally to have been called St Giles Street after the patron saint of Edinburgh. However, King George III rejected the name, St Giles being also the patron saint of lepers and the name of a notorious 'rookery' of slums in London. The street is named after King George's two eldest sons, the Prince George, Duke of Rothesay (later King George IV) and the Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany.
From the 1880s the Princes Street , with its commanding views in combination with great ease of access, became a popular street upon which to locate hotels. The railway companies created huge anchor hotels at either end: the Caledonian Hotel to the west, and North British Hotel to the east. In between were the Royal British Hotel, Old Waverley Hotel, and Mount Royal Hotel, all of which survive.
Several UK high street brands such as Boots, Scotland's largest Boots City Store, BHS, H&M, Debenhams, House of Fraser, Marks & Spencer, Topman and Topshop, hmv also Scotland's largest record store are just a few of the shops located along Princes Street. Jenners department store (now owned by House of Fraser) is an Edinburgh institution, surviving the disappearance of many other local department stores, such as Patrick Thompson's.
The Gardens contain the Ross Bandstand (an open-air theatre), a war memorial to U.S. soldiers of Scottish descent and a floral clock, together with other attractions. Two of the main Scottish art galleries, the Royal Scottish Academy and the National Gallery of Scotland, are located at the foot of The Mound and are served by Princes Street tram stop.
Princes Street's eastbound lanes are restricted to trams, buses, taxis and cyclists. Edinburgh Waverley at the East end of Princes Street is the nearest rail station. The Princes Street tram stop is an in-road island, situated just west of the Royal Scottish Academy near the Foot of the Mound. Princes Street is well-served locally by Lothian Buses. Edinburgh Bus Station is close to the east end of Princes street, at St Andrew Square.

STORYLINE:
Bearing a gift and birthday greetings, President Barack Obama on Friday celebrated Queen Elizabeth II over lunch at Windsor Castle, going the extra mile for a monarch he's expressed a special affection for over his tenure.
First lady Michelle Obama flew in from Washington to join her husband for a series of royal engagements that make up the centerpiece of the president's valedictory trip to London.
Britain's oldest and longest-serving monarch, who celebrated her 90th birthday a day earlier, put a scarf over her head and came out in a light, drizzling rain to greet the president and first lady as their helicopter landed on the lush green lawn outside the castle.
The couples shook hands warmly before hopping into a black Range Rover, driven by Prince Philip, to head back to the castle. Obama sat in front with Philip, the queen and the first lady in the back seat.
A few minutes later, the queen led the four into a sitting room with a roaring fire, where th e four posed for pictures before the private lunch.
The queen was dressed in a light blue suit; the first lady wore an Oscar de la Renta print dress and a black Narciso Rodriguez coat.
The Obama brought a gift: A photo album of the queen's many visits with U.S. president and first ladies.
Obama was breaking up his royal holiday with a stop at 10 Downing St. for talks with Prime Minister David Cameron about the multinational campaign against the Islamic State group, as well as counterterrorism efforts, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, the global economy, Russia's stance toward Ukraine and other issues
Political issues in the United Kingdom and the U.S., including Britain's possible exit from the European Union, or Brexit, are on the agenda, along with the U.S. presidential campaign that will determine Obama's successor.
While the president was meeting Cameron, the Prime Minister's cat Larry was let out of Number 10 and watched the press from the steps.

Exterior Stone Repair Work - Jenners Edinburgh (Mid 1990's)
An interesting short film produced by Jenners detailing the stone cleaning and repair work that took place to the historic building during the mid 1990's.
The film is presented by Robbie Douglas Millar whose family at that time owned the business. The Millars were themselves descendants of James Kennedy who took over the store on the retirement of Charles Jenners in 1881.
At the time the film was made Jenners had the distinction of being the oldest independent department store in the World having being founded in 1838. The building we see today was opened in 1895 when it predecessor, occupying the same site, was destroyed by fire in 1892.
Scotland on Film - Vintage Jenners Fashion
Filmed in 1990 for the BBC's Scotland on Film series, this brief extract looks at vintage fashion. Interviewed are Mary Rice and Rex Walker both long standing Jenners buyers.
The fur storage facility mentioned was a large temperature controlled room on the 5th floor of the main building which employed a full time furrier to look after the coat stock.
