HOKA ONE ONE Top Trails - Santa Barbara, CA
Our ninth stop for the HOKA ONE ONE Top Trails Series is Santa Barbara, CA. Home to both beaches and mountains, Santa Barbara provides diverse running trails, fantastic weather and beautiful scenery.
In this episode we meet up with HOKA Athlete Dani Moreno as she takes us on the very popular Romero Canyon Trail. It's technically advanced with steep ups and downs, and rocks. At one point you can go from 0 to 3,500 feet in two miles. Throughout the Summer Santa Barbara always seems to have a race. Every Wednesday there is Nite Moves which offers a 5k run, a 1k swim or a combination of both. The bonus is the beer and food at the end. Our host Matt Barnhart meets up with Santa Barbara Running Co. owner Joe DeVreese to talk about running in Santa Barbara, local running groups and races. Next our co-host Ian Terpin meets up with co-owner of Santa Barbara Running Co. Monica Devreese who takes a group out on a run at the Jesusita Trail. Our hosts then head to Handlebar Coffee, a popular stop for most runners where Ian and Matt discuss the Santa Barbara running scene. The last stop is a trip to the HOKA ONE ONE headquarters where we get a glimpse behind the scenes and a look at a pretty cool innovation process.

The Jesusita Fire at Santa Barbara CA
The Jesusita fire burned 8,733 acres, destroyed 80 homes and damaged 15 more. Much of the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden was destroyed on the night of May 7. May 8, 2009, the fire perimeter extended from west of Highway 154, in the hills burned in the 1990 Painted Cave Fire, across the front country of the Santa Ynez Mountains east through Mission Canyon, Rattlesnake Canyon, and into the hills above Montecito. The cause of the fire is thought to be related to the use of a power tool near Jesusita trail.
As of May 9, 2009, approximately 5,894 properties were under mandatory evacuation orders, affecting an estimated 14,735 people. In addition, more than 17,787 properties were under evacuation warning, affecting an estimated 44,467 people. There were 28 injuries. The cost of the fire was estimated at $20.00 million.
Tequepis Trail 6/7/15
Tequipis Trail in Santa Barbara.
We biked from the Winchester Canyon Gun Club (or Lizard's Mouth) about 7 miles across W Camino Cielo. Right before the first radio towers, we took a right onto Tequipis Trail! It's about 5 miles of downhill and, relative to other trails in Santa Barbara, I would call it an intermediate level mountain biking trail. Nothing too technical. Just some small bumps, drops and switchbacks. The trail can be narrow and have steep drop-offs to one side so just be cautious.
I think I'll use a helmet mount next time...

Solvang GoPro
Solvang (/ˈsɒlvæŋ/; Danish: [ˈsoːlvɑŋˀ]; Danish for 'sunny field') is a city in Santa Barbara County, California. It is located in the Santa Ynez Valley. The population was 5,245 at the 2010 census, down from 5,332 at the 2000 census. Solvang was incorporated as a city on May 1, 1985.
Solvang was founded in 1911 on almost 9,000 acres (3,600 ha) of the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata Mexican land grant, by a group of Danes who traveled west to establish a Danish colony far from the midwestern winters. The city is home to a number of bakeries, restaurants, and merchants offering a taste of Denmark in California. The architecture of many of the façades and buildings reflects traditional Danish style. There is a copy of the famous Little Mermaid statue from Copenhagen, as well as one featuring the bust of famed Danish fable writer Hans Christian Andersen. A replica of Copenhagen's Round Tower or Rundetårn in the scale 1:3 was finished in 1991 and can be seen in the town center.
Mission Santa Inés, one of the California missions (National Historic Landmark), is located near the center of the town, at the junction of State Route 246 and Alisal Road.

California State Trails Day in Santa Barbara County
Volunteers are the backbone of the trail maintenance program. Trail workdays are held on weekends throughout the year, and we are always looking for volunteers. In many cases no experience is required. Popular days include State Trails Day in April, National Trails Day in June, and National Public Lands Day in September.
