India Vlog: Jaipur Hawamahal, Elefantastic, Sunset from Nahargarh Fort!
** Please expand the description box for itinerary & music details**
February 16, 2015
instagram.com/timandglo
We arrived in Jaipur, our first stop in Rajasthan Province, by train from Agra on the evening of February 15. We took an auto rickshaw from the train station to our hotel, the Umaid Bhawan. It was one of the most gorgeous hotels we stayed at during this trip to India! All the walls and ceilings are ornately painted, and the decor has a lovely period feel. Our room was also very spacious. We highly recommend staying here!
We had a full itinerary for the 16th that started with shopping. Our rickshaw driver dropped us off at the New Gate in Jaipur's Old City, also known as the Pink City. We walked around for about an hour, but most of the shops were closed. We were told that the markets usually open closer to 11:00 am. If you're looking for saris, then we think Jaipur is a great place to purchase. There's a lot of variety for good prices, and bargaining is always welcome. We ended our walking tour with a visit to Hawa Mahal palace.
We had to rush to get back to our hotel for the pick-up by Elefantastic! Round trip transportation was included in the 4,000 rupee per person cost for the four-hour itinerary with the elephants. Lunch, drinks, and the service tax are also included in the cost. Elefantastic was definitely our favorite activity in Jaipur, where we spent 1.5 days total!
Each pair was assigned to an elephant. We got to spend the afternoon with Birly who is a mother to be! She was 10 months pregnant and looking fabulous! We bonded with Birly by petting and feeding her. We then rode Birly in the bush surrounding the compound. After the elephant ride, we went to the home of the owner (Rahul) where his mother made us a home cooked meal. It was SO delicious! With full stomachs we reunited with Birly to amplify her beauty with paints. Don't worry...Elefantastic uses all natural, non-toxic paint. The final activity of the day was water-based. We gave Birly water to quench her thirst then washed and scrubbed her. In the summer months, you can ride the elephants to the river and play with them in the water!
We chose to get dropped off at the foot of hill where Nahargarh Fort is located in Jaipur. We had to walk fast to try to catch sunset. We ended up taking about 20-25 minutes to walk the paved path. Once we reached the top of the hill, we headed to Padao Open Air Restaurant. The views of Jaipur from both the walking path and restaurant are stunning! Admission to Padao is 50 rupees per person and comes with a free drink of tea, coffee, water or soda. You can also pay for other drinks and appetizers.
Note that there is no transportation at the fort apart from what you take. We walked up, which meant that we had to walk back down to the city to catch an auto rickshaw. The path is not lit at night. It seemed dangerous, but fortunately we made it back to our hotel safely. If you plan to stay at the fort until it's totally dark outside, we recommend taking a taxi or rickshaw and paying the driver extra to wait for you. ;)
As always, thank you for watching!!
Happy travels!! :D

Jaipur is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan. Jaipur has long been established on tourist itineraries as the third corner of India's Golden Triangle. At its heart, the original city, popularly known as the Pink City, stands enclosed by walls and imposing gateways. Designed for defence, they still physically demarcate it from the sprawling modern suburbs around, while the vibrant bazaars within are renowned for hand-dyed and embroidered textiles and jewellery. The city's population is around 3.1 million.

At the center of its stately street grid (notable in India) stands the opulent, colonnaded City Palace complex. With gardens, courtyards and museums, part of it is still a royal residence

Traditional Rajasthani jewellery on display in Jaipur
Kundan jewellery embedded with sapphire stone : a popular choice among the Rajasthanis in India. Meenakari also another traditional Rajasthani jewellery on display in a store. Both of these popular and expensive form of jeweleries originated in Rajasthan and slowly concurred the heart of thousands of women in around India and other parts of the world.
Kundan meena jewellery is a traditional form of Indian gemstone jewellery involving a gem set with gold foil between the stones and its mount, usually for elaborate necklaces. The method is believed to have originated in the royal courts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is the oldest form of jewellery made and worn in India.
Meena Kundan, also known as Bikaneri or Jaipuri jewellery, is a popular variation, wherein enameling with vivid colours and designs is on the reverse, while the kundan setting is in the front. The city of Jaipur in Rajasthan has traditionally been the centre for Kundan jewellery in India.
Meenakari is the art of coloring and ornamenting the surface of metals by fusing over it brilliant colors that are decorated in an intricate design. Mina is the feminine form of Minoo in Persian, meaning heaven. Mina refers to the Azure colour of heaven. The Iranian craftsmen of Sasanied era invented this art and Mongols spread it to India and other countries. French tourist, Jean Chardin, who toured Iran during the Safavid rule, made a reference to an enamel work of Isfahan, which comprised a pattern of birds and animals on a floral background in light blue, green, yellow and red. Gold has been used traditionally for Meenakari Jewellery as it holds the enamel better, lasts longer and its luster brings out the colors of the enamels. Silver, a later introduction, is used for artifacts like boxes, bowls, spoons, and art pieces while Copper which is used for handicraft products were introduced only after the Gold Control Act, which compelled the Meenakars to look for a material other than gold, was enforced in India.
Initially, the work of Meenakari often went unnoticed as this art was traditionally used as a backing for the famous kundan or stone-studded jewellery. This also allowed the wearer to reverse the jewellery as also promised a special joy in the secret of the hidden design!

Kundan Setting
Kundan setting is the technique most closely associated with the jewelled arts of the Mughal emperors. By using pure, soft, 24-carat gold (kundan), the goldsmith can set gemstones directly into fragile enamelled surfaces or into engraved gem materials, such as nephrite jade and rock crystal. This film, shot in workshops in Mumbai and Jaipur, shows a jewellery craftsman kundan setting diamonds in an enamelled gold earring.
