Danish Agriculture Minister Dan Joergensen has pledged to review the science of slaughtering animals after meeting with Jewish and Muslim leaders concerned about new regulations that ban halal and kosher slaughter without prior stunning.
The restrictions will have no direct implications for Danish abattoirs because in the last 10 years, no slaughtering has taken place without stunning in the country. People who prefer to eat halal and kosher animals that were not stunned import their meat.
Animal rights groups have praised Joergensen's move to protect animal welfare. But Jewish and Muslim groups say it is a sign of intolerance toward religious minorities. The debate gained momentum internationally after Joergensen stated that in Denmark, animal rights come before religion. Countries like Israel and Saudi Arabia criticised the Danish government for restricting religious freedoms. Many netizens agreed.

Copenhagen Shooting: Is Europe Safe For Jews?
A shooting in Copenhagen, Denmark this past Saturday left two dead. Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had been receiving death threats for depicting the head of the Prophet Mohammad on a dog, was killed by a Danish gunman at a café free speech event, entitled Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression. The gunman then proceeded to kill a guard at a nearby synagogue. The gunman was found and killed on Sunday. With this tragedy following the recent Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris, is Europe safe for Jews? We discuss it, in this Lip News clip with Jackie Koppell.

This World War 2 era short film – originally titled as Denmark Fights for Freedom – documents the struggle of the Danish resistance movement against their German occupiers during the period 1943-1944. It was released in 1944.
According to the statement in the intro, the scenes were surreptitiously shot under the most dangerous conditions and smuggled out of the country during the German occupation. It is a dramatic story of how a spirited nation pulled together to fight oppression through acts of sabotage and mass civil disobedience. Inspirational!
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND / CONTEXT
Denmark in World War 2:
During most of World War 2, Denmark was first a protectorate, then an occupied territory under Germany. The decision to invade Denmark was taken in Berlin on 17 December 1939. On 9 April 1940, Germany invaded Denmark in Operation Weserübung and established a de facto protectorate over the country. On 29 August 1943 Germany placed Denmark under direct military occupation, which lasted until the Allied victory on 5 May 1945. Contrary to the situation in other countries under German occupation, most Danish institutions continued to function relatively normally until 1945. Both the Danish government and King Christian X remained in the country in an uneasy relationship between a democratic and a totalitarian system until the Danish government stepped down in a protest against the German demands to institute the death penalty for sabotage.
Danish resistance movement:
The Danish resistance movement (Danish: Modstandsbevægelsen) was an underground insurgency to resist the German occupation of Denmark during World War 2. Due to the initially lenient arrangements, in which the German occupation authority allowed the democratic government to stay in power, the resistance movement was slower to develop effective tactics on a wide scale than in some other countries.
By 1943, many Danes were involved in underground activities, ranging from producing illegal publications to spying and sabotage. Major groups included the communist BOPA (Danish: Borgerlige Partisaner, Civil Partisans) and Holger Danske, both based in Copenhagen. Resistance agents eliminated an estimated 400 Danish collaborators and informers until 1944.
In the postwar period, the Resistance was supported by politicians within Denmark and there was little effort to closely examine the killings. Studies were made in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and people learned that there was sometimes improvised and contingent decision-making about the targets, with some morally ambiguous choices. Several important books and films have been produced on this topic.

Reflections on the 70th Anniversary of the Danish Rescue of the Jews with Bo Lidegaard
In this inaugural Ambassador Edward E. and Susie Elson Lecture, Danish historian, journalist, and former diplomat Bo Lidegaard, author of Countrymen (Knopf, 2013), discusses the extraordinary story of how Denmark saved its Jews from the Nazis in World War II.
With his access to diaries, letters, and family accounts, Lidegaard focuses on how, in 1943, the Danish king, his ministers, and Parliament agreed that no one in Denmark would aid the Nazis in rounding up the 7,000 Danish Jews for deportation and certain death. Over the two-week period of September 26 to October 9, 1943, 6,500 out of the 7,000 Jews escaped to Sweden, having been assisted, hidden, and protected by their fellow countrymen.
The Ambassador Edward E. Elson and Susie Elson Lecture series was created by Edward E. Elson (U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, 1993--1998) to recognize outstanding achievement in the fields of the arts, literature, education, or public service by Danes or Danish Americans.
Bo Lidegaard is the editor-in-chief of the leading Danish newspaper Politiken and the author of several books on modern history. He served as a diplomat in the Danish Foreign Service before joining the Office of the Danish Prime Minister as Ambassador and Permanent Undersecretary of State tasked with responsibilities corresponding to those of National Security Advisor. Lidegaard later led the team preparing the 2009 United Nations conference on climate change in Copenhagen. He is one of the most respected and widely read Danish historians, and his work has focused on U.S.-Danish relations in the twentieth century, as well as on the modern Danish welfare state. Lidegaard lives in Copenhagen.

Danish PM: 'We will do everything' to protect Jewish community
Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said on Sunday that Denmark will do everything it can to protect the Jewish community in the country as she visited a synagogue attacked hours earlier by a gunman.
A Jewish man was killed and two police officers were wounded in the attack outside the synagogue in the Krstalgade area of Copenhagen, which occurred shortly before 00:00 GMT Sunday.
The gunman was also suspected of carrying another attack which took place before 15:00 GMT on Saturday, when he used an automatic weapon to shoot through the windows of the Krudttoenden cultural centre during a panel discussion on freedom of expression.
The panel was featuring Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad.

Danish police temporarily reinstated border controls with Sweden on Tuesday, setting up a checkpoint on Oresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo.
Copenhagen Chief Police Inspector Jens Jespersen cited the increase of violent crime and gangland violence allegedly carried out by perpetrators coming from Sweden as the main reason, for example several explosions in the Greater Copenhagen area.
In some cases we are quite certain that the perpetrators, they are from Sweden and they came to Denmark to commit the crime. And in the other cases we suspect that the perpetrators could be from Sweden, so there are links to organised crime in Sweden, Jespersen stated.
Police assured that the checkpoints will not unduly delay traffic coming from Sweden and that commuters would only be delayed a few minutes extra by checks carried out a couple of times every week.
