Wild Jiankou Great Wall Hiking! Heaven stair, Upward flying eagle, Beijing Knot...
Wild Jiankou hike is a very tough hike for the Great Wall. The famous parts are heaven stair, upward flying eagle, Beijing Knot. We hike it last September with my clients Nico! Wonderful hike!
Travelling to The Great Wall of China | Leo Hostel Secret Wall Tour | Beijing.
Taking a break from our teaching life, Apartment #1003 took a quick trip from Wuhan to Beijing to hike The Great Wall also known as The Long Wall, through the Leo Hostel Tour. Take a read for my experience plus some tips!
The first day was filled with exploring the city, bike riding, exploring Tian'anmen Square and indulging in food at The Cheese Cake Factory.
The second day, we had booked a tour through our hostel, The Leo Hostel, for their 'Secret Great Wall Tour'. The cost was 300 RMB inclusive of transport, and lunch. The tour seemed to be offered for other travellers who were not staying at the Leo Hostel too!
The tour started at 7.25am, but we only hit the road just before 8am. Enjoy a nap on the private bus, until you arrive to the Ancient Badaling Wall. The tour allows you 3 hours to hike 7 watch towers, to return at the meeting spot for around 1.30pm. Please note, no actual tour guide or representative of the Hostel hikes with you.
There was literally noone on the wall except for us! All our photos and views were free from other tourists, and everything was quiet.
This hike was quiet difficult, with extreme inclines, and some sections being slippery surfaces. Please don't be a wally and wear comfortable running shoes.
We did this hike on Septemeber 2nd, and it was blue skies of 34 degrees. Bring a minimum of 1.5 Litres of water and a hat and sunblock. It was very hot and made the hike slightly more difficult.
After the hike, you get your fresh Chinese lunch, and then get back on the bus to go back to the Hostel for around 5pm.
If you are looking for a fun, challenging and more importantly tourist free tour...100% would recommend this tour.
Later that evening, we visited the area of Chaoyang District, more specifically the Sanlitun Courtyard to a place called The Taco Bar. If you are looking for a cool, hip and friendly environment to have a GOOD meal, check it out. The area is fresh, and the food was one of the best meals we have had since living in China.

Great Wall of China – BEST section to visit - Jian Kou to Mutianyu
I’ve been to the Great Wall of China a handful of times over the last decade and visiting Jian Kou was my favourite experience by far. The Badaling and Mutianyu sections are the more popular choices for tourists understandably because they are easier to get to. I find Badaling is too packed full of tourists but Mutianyu is beautiful and the section I would recommend to visit. That was before I went to Jian Kou. There are signs saying this is not opened to the public but we went on a recommendation. If you’re looking for a great experience at the Wall, you have to visit Jiankou! It is not as polished as the other sections and can be dangerous but if you’re careful and go slowly, you should be ok. We were! We started at Jian Kou and hiked for around 4-6 hours (we lost count and stopped a lot to take photos and enjoy the scenery). This is what to expect:
00:53 The car ride to the Great Wall
01:44 The hike from Jian Kou begins
01:57 We’re not sure where to go
02:56 We work out where to go
03:21 We reach the Great Wall
05:04 The hike continues
06:21 Climbing up Ox Horn, the most challenging part of Jian Kou
08:50 Ox Horn Conquered. We make it to the top
09:06 Now we have to climb down, the hard part
10:23 The Ox Horn Shortcut
10:55 So many bugs
11:26 There’s not many people at this part of the Wall
12:29 The best views from Jian Kou
13:45 We make it to Mutianyu
15:09 The Praying Mantis of Mutianyu
15:54 Sunset at Mutianyu
16:04 Catching the Cable car down
18:07 “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man”
As a reference, we used the Beijing Walking Tours travel tips of what to expect for the hike.
There were some surprises that we didn’t expect but it was a very helpful guide to understand if you’re on the right track and what to expect.

Great Wall of China Mutianyu 幕田峪长城 Tower 14 to Tower 6 Steep Steps Gorgeous Day
Today, we visit the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu. 幕田峪长城 This place was an hour's drive or so from Beijing CBD (we stayed at the Renaissance Beijing Capital Hotel). It was a gorgeous day to walk the Great Wall! Super fun. We took the cable car up to Tower 14, and then walked towards Tower 6, before taking the Toboggan down. The crowds were light, making it comfortable to walk and admire the views. The steps were steep at some parts, so please come see the Great Wall while you can still climb up and down steps. My video will show you more. Here is my travel blog post -
Which Section of the GREAT WALL OF CHINA Should You Visit? | Abandoned or Restored
Which Section of the Great Wall of China should you visit? This was probably the biggest question we had before travelling to China. Mutianyu? Badaling? Jinshanling? Or how about off the beaten path at the Great Wall Fresh Homestay? - This film aims to determine once and for all, which is the best section of the Great Wall to visit.
I'm trying something a little different with this film - it's longer and more documentary style. Let me know what you think in the comments!

From Jiankou Great Wall to Mutianyu
In the outskirts of Beijing, it's possible to hike from the old, wild Great Wall to the newer, tourist friendly section. Starting out at Jiankou (剪口), you can see how the Wall was when it was built hundreds of years ago. After a few hours of hiking on the rugged terrain, you arrive at Mutianyu (慕田峪), which makes for a much easier walk and provides stunning views of the surrounding countryside. If your feet are too tired to hike back down, just hop on the cable car or zoom down in a toboggan!
The Great Wall of China - Mutianyu Section Beijing - Cable Car and Toboggan
The Mutianyu section is located 43 miles NE of Beijing and is one of the most popular sections to visit. Cable car ride up to the wall and toboggan ride down.

The BEST Section of the Great Wall | Beijing, China
After much discussion with our local guide, we decided to stay away from Badaling & Mutianyu as they're filled with tourists and tainted with taboggans and KFC! After much research, we found the best part of the Great Wall to visit. It was a little trickier to visit, but it was SO worth it. Rarely seeing anyone two hours out of Beijing with the most insane Great Wall views is one of our ALL-TIME favourite experiences.

The Great Wall of China: Hiking & Camping!
The two days we spent exploring remote portions of The Great Wall were some of the most awe-inspiring, challenging and beautiful days of our 21 days in China! We started day one on the Jiankou portion of the wall and then to the Huanghuacheng that night. We hiked in the dark and set up a tent to camp on the wall, waking up the next morning to gorgeous songs of bugs and wind passing through the mist the next morning. After packing up the camp site, we hiked the Huanghuacheng section for the rest of the day. I highly recommend visiting these gorgeous pieces of the wall and experiencing history far from tourists. It's truly unforgettable.

The Great Wall of China, Jiankou Section DANGEROUS!
Beijing Adventure November 2016 with Stefano and Amy
Jiankou Great Wall is regarded by some people as the most picturesque section of Great Wall and is a good example of Wild Great Wall. It’s become a popular photographic hotspot and hiking destination in recent days. Jiankou is translated as Arrow Nock in English, since the shape of the mountains where the walll was built is like an arrow with the collpased ridge opening as its arrow nock. The main section of the wall was built along the ridges with steep cliffs on each side. Therefore, you have to prepare for a good fitness and great care if you climb this section.
Jiankou Great Wall is located at Xizhaizi Village, 30 km from Huairou District, and 70 km from Beijing. It will take a two-hour driving from Beijing downtown. Originally Jiankou Great Wall was built in Tang Dynasty and was restored largely in the Ming Dynasty. It connects to Mutianyu Great Wall in the east and Huanghuacheng Great Wall in the west. It’s the most dangerous and steep section of all Ming Dynasty Great Wall. It stretches from The Ox Horn Edge Wall in the east to The Nine-Eye Tower in the north via The Beijing Knot with total length of 9.3 miles. Different from the building material – bricks - at Mutianyu and Simatai sections, Jiankou section was mainly built with local material – dolomite, which made the base of the wall harder and stronger. Therefore, Jiankou section is more steeper, higher and vaired compared with other sections of the Great Wall near Beijing. At the foot of the Xizhaizi village, you will see the clear dolomite base of the Great Wall.
Jiankou Great Wall consists of 28 towers, and the most popular towers includes: The Nine-Eye Tower, The Beijing Knot and Stairway to the Heaven. One section called 38 Big Steps is really steep with an angle of 80 degrees. Zhengbeilou Tower is the right place to appreciate the beauty of sunrise and sunset.
Beijing Wanderer (3) - Jiankou Great Wall Thrill - one of the most dangerous section of Great Wal
Thrilling...
Jiankou is one of the most dangerous sections of the Great Wall.
It features thrilling several collaped and ruined segments with 'cliffs' near 80-85 degrees.
To climb these dangerous 'cliffs', you are taking the risk of your life.
Jiankou's not been repaired or renovated since its construction in Ming dynasty. So it's almost near 700 years old.
How could those people in that time could carry such heavy stones to these cliff, and even built a massive solid wall?

I took it from China Highlight (There may be more operators). You may not just get in without a guide as there is a sign that says it is not open to public. Note that in my tour the ladder was removed by the locals who did bot get payed for the service. Our Guide found way to go up anyway.
