Formerly known as Ranichi Baug meaning Queen's Gardens, Jijamata Udyan is the only zoo in the city of Mumbai. Its former name is a depiction of the original British name Victoria Garden. Now it is also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo, named after the mother of Shivaji, the hero of Maratha Empire. The zoo is located in the heart of the city in Byculla, in close proximity to the lower income housing colonies of Mumbai - famously called Chawls. Built in 1861, it is the only zoo of Mumbai and one of the oldest in India.
In the zoo, you can witness many wild animals.The aviary has a good collection of bright and noisy birds. The zoo is going through a revamping procedure which will add many exciting features to the premise as well as bring in many more species of animals. The renovation will also include a medicinal garden, a butterfly enclosure and a tactical garden for the visually impaired. Currently, the zoo has opened up the penguin enclosure for the public where 8 cheerful and friendly penguins entertain you with their cute antics.

This zoo has animals and birds like Sarus Carne, Golden Pheasant, White Peacock, Crocodile, Hippopotamus, Python, Blue Bull, Spotted deer, blackbuck, Monkeys, Elephants, Squirrel, African Grey Parrot, Indian Parrot, White Crow, Love Bird, white cockatiel, Maina, chrysoliphus pictus, Sparrow, Ostrich, Cranes Bird...
Out of all the animals and birds my favorite is Golden Pheasant....
The Golden Pheasant or Chinese Pheasant, (Chrysolophus pictus) is a gamebird of the order Galliformes (gallinaceous birds) and the family Phasianidae. It is native to forests in mountainous areas of western China, but feral populations have been established in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. In England they may be found in East Anglia in the dense forest landscape of the Breckland.
It is sad to see the animals and birds in such unhygienic condition and many cages of birds and animals stinks very badly.

The zoo is everyone's favorite place, so today I am at Jijamata Udyaan (Rani Baug) which is a Mumbai Zoo, so recently this Zoo is renovated and its located nearby Byculla Railway Station hence also known as Byculla Zoo which is just 5 minutes walk away.
The main attraction here now is Penguins, but when you see them you won't get any excitement{that's my view and it may differ from person to person)because of they were in action at the time of my visit and standing at one place beneath the A/C blower, I guess they were resting probably????
Some Readable info about Jijamata Udyaan(Rani Baug)
Jijamata Udyan formerly called Rani Baug (meaning Queen's Gardens) after the original British name Victoria Gardens, and now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo.
It is covering 50 acres located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. It is the oldest public garden in Mumbai, In 1835, British administration granted a large plot of land in Sewri to the Agro Horticultural Society of Western India for a botanical garden.
That land was later acquired for a European burial ground In 1861, construction of a new garden was commenced on 33 acres in the Mount Estate, Mazgaon (now included in Byculla).
The flora from Sewri garden was transferred to this new garden named Victoria Gardens which was formally opened to the public by [Henry Bartle Frere Family life|Lady Frere] on November 19, 1862.
Agro Horticultural Society of Western India continued to maintain Victoria Gardens till 1873 when the society's end led to the municipal corporation taking over the garden's upkeep.
In 1890 the garden was extended by 15 acres, especially for the zoo.
So these were some information about the Zoo, I remember once it was full of big animals like Lions, Tigers, Bears and lot others, but now (2018) many of the animals are missing at the time of this video even monkeys and some species of Deer are missing but as I mentioned in the video, this Zoo is Upgrading soon.

How to reach
The nearest station to the zoo is Byculla on the central line and from there one can walk the 1 km distance. There are buses plying towards the zoo and these are bus numbers 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 15, 19, 21, 22, 25, 50, 51, 65, 67, 69, 134, 126. Western line commuters can get down at Mumbai Central station and take a cab which will approximately cost Rs. 45-50 one way. People travelling by harbour line can de-board at Reay Road station and then hire a cab towards the zoo.
History
The zoo was originally built in 1861 by the British Empire and was called the Victoria Gardens back then. It was renamed post-independence and is now affectionately called Rani Bagh by Mumbaikars. The zoo is now under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation which was donated to the then called city of Bombay by Mr. David Sassoon, the same Jewish businessman who also developed other heritage structures like the David Sassoon library, Victoria and Albert museum and the beautiful Victoria tower clock which is right inside the udyan.
Spread over 50 acres, the zoo hosts around 180 mammals, 500 birds and nearly 40 reptiles. It is also lined up with nearly 3000 species of trees, many of which are rare (like the clumping bamboo). The animals housed in the zoo include crocodiles, Sambhar deer, Chital, and snakes.

Like most zoos, Jijamata Udyan too has its own museum in the form of Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum which was established in 1855 and located within the zoos premises.

Since 1861 of its establishment, this decades old historic jijamata udyan is full of lush green trees and famous for the species of birds and animals easily seen once you enter Jijamata udyan. This zoo in Byculla was now under Mumbai Municipal corporation was donated to then called Bombay by Mr. David Sassoon, the same Jewish businessman who has developed other heritage structures like David Sassoon library, Victoria and Albert museum and the beautiful Victoria tower clock which you can easily find inside the udyan (garden). With the green trees is a botanical garden in the pathway inside the zoo with beautiful and wide range of flower plants, herb plants and other new species of plants.
Updates 2016 : Year 2015, The 70 years old (Since 1873), Zoo license expired and CZA (Central Zoo Authority) sent a notice before hand for the irregularities and filthy maintenance of the only wild life animal premise here.
The huge 53 acres of Jijamata Udyan did not see any major maintenance work since long that will keep the zoo visitors happy with pleasant surrounding to view with healthy animals and birds staying happy in hygienic condition and so the bad condition got worsen since last 7 decades.
Filthy water around Hippos and Crocodiles, Wild special attractions like Lions and Tigers are totally missing now. No system to monitor the activities inside animal surroundings and so are many notorious visitors teasing birds and animals which create unhealthy and unpleasant surrounding conditions for these species, Gradually making them aggressive and unhealthy.

Jijamata Udyaan formerly called Raanicha Baag (meaning Queen's Gardens) after the original British name Victoria Gardens, and now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan & Zoo, is a zoo and garden located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, India. It was laid out in 1861 and is one of the oldest zoos in India.
